Lake Of Sins: Escape: A YA dystopian adventure like no other. Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,572 ratings

Every year after harvest the weakest are removed from the encampment.
None of them are ever seen or heard from again.

Trinity’s only hope of escape lies in the forest. She’s not afraid of the creatures that live there. There’s nothing bigger than foxes in those woods, except this time something is different.

This time she’s hunted from land and sea by predators that should only exist in legends.
Surrounded by three enemies. Surrender is her only option, but which one should she choose?

A captivating dystopian read filled with human-animal hybrids and creatures you’ve never even imagined.

Interview with the AuthorQ. – So, why should someone read the Lake of Sins series?

Well, because it’s great (smiles) and you can get the ebook for FREE. However, if you’re looking for your typical dystopian, post-apocalyptic, survival thriller then you should look somewhere else. This story has been described as a one of a kind world created in a unique dystopian society.

The characters in the series are human-animal hybrids—genetic mutations or evil experiments, is yet to be revealed. It’s an entire new species of characters who don’t fit in the typical genre categories of vampire, werewolf, witch, fairies or even angels and demons. The world of the Lake of Sins is segregated by class with the humans ruling supreme.

In book one, Escape, Trinity, a sixteen year old Producer (the lowest of the classes), unwittingly sets off a collision between the classes when she flees into the forest to discover the fate of the teenagers who are removed from camp every year after harvest. Some say they are taken to another camp to keep bloodlines strong. Others say they are tortured. No one knows and Trinity is determined to find out, but what she doesn’t expect is to be hunted by mutant creatures and predators long thought to be extinct.

The books are fast paced with adventure and mutated creatures around every corner. There are legends that are truth and societal truths that are well guarded lies. All-in-all, it’s a unique and exciting read and you should give it a try. I think you’ll love it.

The Chimera Chronicles series also takes place in the world of the Lake of Sins. These stories are prequels, explaining how some of the characters, who you meet in the Lake of Sins series, became monsters.

Q. – Who should read the Lake of Sins series?

Although there’s a strong, female lead in Lake of Sins, the audience for both series is broad. I have fans (male and female) aged ten through eighty. Anyone who likes gory thrillers that are dark, a little disturbing and packed with action will enjoy these books.

However, a word of caution is in order. These books are not for the squeamish. Some scenes are bloody and violent almost falling into the horror genre, but the interactions between the characters are funny, poignant and loving (and a love triangle develops as the stories progress). Still, I wouldn’t recommend these books to anyone under thirteen without the parents reading the books first.

L. S. O’Dea sees things a bit differently than most people. This is probably a biproduct of being the youngest of seven children in a time when TV was only worth watching in the evenings or Saturday mornings and there were no computers. Back then, kids had to amuse themselves and being five years younger than her closest sibling she was often the unwilling entertainment.

One day, before she started kindergarten, she really wanted to learn how to spell her name (Linda Sue). Her mother was busy so her brothers were told to help their baby sister. When they were done, she raced into the kitchen to show her mother what she’d learned. She stood tall and recited the letters of her name. L-E-M-O-N H-E-A-D.

To this day, she still receives a box of Lemonhead candy every year for Christmas.

Lake of Sins: Escape is the first book in the Lake of Sins series, the first book I have read by L.S. O’dea, and what a great introduction. It’s a YA dystopian world, dealing with the harsh truths of life. I loved the world building, fleshed out characters and story. We join Trinity, the FMC, as she seeks and finds answers to what happened to her family and friends once taken from their village. On her quest she finds new family and friends and learns hard truths about life in a post apocalyptic world. I was hooked from start to end, and read the book in one sitting. If you enjoy self discovery journey, with found family, strong emotions, and a gripping story I strongly recommend this book . I can't wait to read the next installment.

It's like 3.6, but because there's no way to give parts of a star, and because 0.6 is closer to the next one (4) than to the previous one (3) I decided to give 4 stars.

So, this is a post-apocalyptic or dystopian world where there are different classes of people. Not only rich and poor, or lords and servants. Literally: the people are different. Some have fangs, some are too tall, some like beasts. On top of the world stand The Almighties who, to my best knowledge, look like normal people. At the bottom, the producers, who are in charge of sowing and harvesting for everybody above them. There are no animals: no cows, no lions, no pigs, only few mutated aberrations you don't wanna mess up with or bump into at midnight (you may end-up eaten).

So, this teenage girl Trinity, daughter of a producer and a house servant (house servants have claws and fangs, producers do not, so Trinity must hide hers for she lives and works with the producers) runs away from home to find her "great perhaps". In the way, she discovers a bunch of stuff about this world that is everything but fair, or safe, and is everything but the crap the almighties sold to the producers ages ago.

The story is interesting, coming-of-age style. An in a bunch of this coming-of-age stories, Trinity will make the wrong decisions once and again, putting herself, and her friends, in danger. The shocking end serves as the coming-of-age cathartic element, and Trinity matures in twenty seconds. This is the first one of a series, so she doesn't mature too much, so you may continue reading her adventures and watching her coming-of-age process.

The world building is good, without being amazing, but is well done and respects its own laws, so it makes sense. The story starts slow, so don't expect great adventures from page number 1. Expect at first teen angst as if in high-school, with bullies and all, which, to be honest, seems to me kinda out place in a post-apocalyptic story. Then she runs away and the author remembers what kind of story it really is and the good stuff starts.

A typical YA formula, good, but not outstanding. My recommendation? If you're looking for enjoyable reading, this is your book, and maybe your series, but don't expect anything else, like the answers to those great perhaps.

Kiss,

Gacela

Trinity is a sixteen-year old half-Producer and half House Servant a human subspecies post-apocalyptic events. Trinity is determined to find out what happened to her the other teenagers that leave every year after the Harvest. Producers tend to crops for the Almighties who are superior to Producers. A House Servant is a creature with claws and fangs. Trinity is captured by a Tracker (a furry dragon person) who keeps Trinity as a pet until they get in a trouble and save each other’s lives. The Tracker has a Handler and the three of them go on an adventure to find out what happened to her kind. I really enjoyed reading this fantastic young adult dystopian fantasy novel.

This story has just the right balance of interesting characters, a variety of scenes & a bit of action to keep everyone reading.

No sex or swearing but regular violence & a few gruesome descriptions so not for the super young readers.

A couple of typos sprinkled through, needs a bit more proof - reading

"Escape" is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time. Parts of it are gory but it is exciting and fun to read. I read it in one sitting. I always read in bed before I go to sleep, but after I started this book, it was so good I couldn't put it down until I was done with it at 6:30 in the morning. The book is well written and well edited. I loved all the characters in the book, especially the predators. In most books if predators are "good" they are given human characteristics, but not in this book. This book goes at a fast pace. There's no boring parts to skip through. I do have a lot of questions that I want answered. The only place I can get those answers is from the fantastic mind of L.S. O'Dea and the rest of the books in the "Lake of Sins" series.

Once upon a time an illness ravaged the planet, killing most of the humans, all domestic animals and every wild animal larger than a wild turkey. In this dystopian society the Almightys rule the other human classes. Teenager Trinity is a Producer (the lowest class). Genetically, she is also a House Servant and has been hiding her retractable claws, her sharp teeth and her ability to jump high in the trees.

'Lake of Sins' sounds like a coming-of-age story. Trinity is lonely and the favourite target of bullies. Wondering about her future and what the Almightys have in store for her and the other young people in her compound, she escapes into a dangerous world where no one is as she expected.

Trinity is the typical outcast. Her character develops as the story unfolds, from ignorance to denial to acceptance, but still too young to understand the reality of adults, and still innocent or naive enough to believe she can save her people. The support cast is intriguing and diverse. The friends she makes on the way try to keep her grounded and teach her survival skills.

'Lake of Sins: Escape' is the first part of a very readable dystopian fantasy for young adults. Growing up is never easy and Trinity is learning it the hard way, but she is the heroin, and there is a sequel: Secrets in Blood. Yes, 'Escape' ends with a cliffhanger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its one of those books that leaves you curious and wondering
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 7, 2018
First up, I received a copy free in return for a review and here it is. While this book may not be perfect, it is well worth your time reading if you like the darker side of Science Fiction. In my opinion its not Horror and its not exclusive to young adults. The writing is slick with well described characters and creatures. Its one of those books that leaves you curious and wondering all the way through how has this world come about but don't let that put you off. If you have read H.G.Wells' the Island of Doctor Moreau, you will enjoy this series, if you haven't read Dr Moreau...shame on you!

A very gripping tale that gives you goose bumps because in your minds eye you compare what is happening with the “producers”to how we treat livestock. It is always a good sign when I finish a book that I immediately look for the next one. I can’t wait to see how Trinity and her unlikely pals master the enormous tasks they face and what the outcome will be. And I would like to find out more about all the different casts and classes.

I liked it as a coming of age adventure. Some parts were grim others were gorey but a good tale if a little twisted. I can’t tell more without giving parts away. If you like some gore and adventure then this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story involving different classes of creature in a future world
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 13, 2019
On Earth in the future all animals over a weight of 20 pounds are extinct and humans are not completely human. The population are segregated by class and the lowest class (a Producer) has the job of producing food for all of the other classes with the ultimate being making something called the Harvest List. Producer Trinity knows she won't be chosen to stay and breed as she has some hidden differences to the others due to being a mixed breed - namely claws, fangs and the ability to see in the dark - something she has had to hide her whole life. She is determined to find out where the teenagers who don't make the list go before they come for her and so in the last week before she is taken decides to have one more try to find out what happens by sneaking into the woods. She discovers the horrifying fate that awaits - and so vows to try and return to the camp to try and save everyone else.

I loved the concept of this story and the way the different classes mirrored in many ways real life. I could definitely feel her horror when she discovered the fate of those that were taken away from the camp and understand why she was so compelled to go and try to save the others (even though they had mostly ignored her). It seems that it also mirrored real life in the way that there were some who were profiting from others misery and I only hope that we experience more of those characters and hope that they receive some kind of just deserts for the behaviour towards some of the others. Well written it was well described and I could imagine the world at the way that the characters in the story lived. Looking forward to knowing what happens next - there are some folks can hopefully get some kind of punishment in the future.
