La Belle Communauté Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

Abby, better known by her mother as "Honey," has been performing the delicate balancing act between keeping her dementia-ridden mother living independently or moving her into a memory care facility. As the disease slowly steals more of Mom, Abby realizes the constant care of her mother is slowly stealing her life.

Amid the struggle, Abby and her husband, Jim, are invited to a garden party. Abby's in-laws, Barb and Joe, moved into a swanky, gated, all-inclusive living facility known as La Belle Communauté. Barb, a now-retired horticulturalist, once designed gardens for the "Who's Who" of the city. La Belle recently underwent extensive renovations of the outdoor space with Barb at the helm. Now comes the inaugural unveiling, to which Jim and Abby have VIP seats.

But life doesn't always work out the way we would like, and things aren't always what they seem. What's really going on behind the gates of La Belle? Come to the garden and meet the residents of La Belle Communauté, who will make you both laugh and cry.

Deb Procopio, a Central New York native and first time author, is a humorous story teller who has spent the last 10 years caring for family members with dementia. She also started a blog: https://lifeunderdeborahspalm.com and recently embarked on developing two YouTube channels. Life Under Deborah's Palm - The Dementia Road deals with issues of caretaking loved ones with dementia, and Life Under Deborah's Palm - The God Stuff that discusses spiritual topics.

When she is not writing, she is busy landscaping, working in her veggie garden, and blankly staring at her physics teacher husband as he attempts to explain to her that the recent discovery of gravity waves proves Einstein's 1916 theory of relativity was correct. Deb and her husband also spend their time attempting to tame a unit of energy named Joule, a German shorthaired pointer/Labrador mix. Joule has chewed a riding lawn mower to pieces, pulled wiring apart, and played "chase" around the dining room table with a butcher knife.

The Procopios fear that one day the dog will completely rule their house.

If you are at any stage of being a caregiver, family member or friend of someone with dementia, this is the book to read. A valuable resource written as a novel. A novel idea! My highest recommendation for this wonderful book! It is written with humor and love. I found myself laughing and crying through lessons learned for my own journey with a family member with this insidious disease. I didn't want to put this book down once I started it. I fell in love with the people in it. I loved their approach to life and always leading with humor when humanly possible. Not only did it help me with where I am at on this journey, but it helped prepare me for what is to come. I love this author's writing. I hope there will be more books in the works on any subject as I just adore her writing style! Heartfelt gratitude to the author! A book that will stay with me forever!

This is an excellent book for anyone who's struggled with caring for a loved one with dementia, or just wonders about it--or just wants a really enjoyable book to read. The author uses humor in conveying the day-to-day struggles over several years of trying to keep multiple elderly family members safe and secure as bit by bit they lose their abilities to manage their own lives. Dealing with losing someone to dementia isn't funny, but finding humor helps the main character cope with it. This book is so entertainingly written that the author helps the reader find the positives in a difficult situation. Definitely a must-read!

I would recommend this book for anyone still in the trenches of caretaking for a loved one with dementia or trying to heal from the ravages that dementia has left behind after a loved has passed. The author's ability to weave a scene leaves the reader feeling as if they were actually witnesses to the events. Her candour, humour, and honest emotions just resonate with the reader. I couldn't put the book down. I laughed...I cried...I understood the frustration & anticipatory grief as the disease progressed.
