Learning to Feel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 4,444 ratings

Resigned to living a sexless, loveless life, Doctor Nathan Tierney knows something is missing. In a rash decision, he leaves his life-consuming job at Mass General Hospital, Boston, to be the small-town doctor in Belfast, Maine. With the job comes a house, and with the house comes a handyman-painter.

Trent Jamieson, a nomadic artist, and his dog Bentley, are offered free accommodation for the few weeks he fixes up the hospital-owned house. Nathan is transfixed by this free-spirited, undeniably gorgeous man.

Confused but amazed to feel any kind of attraction - much less to a man - Nathan convinces himself to put aside any preconceived ideas, and allows himself to just feel. As their attraction for each other grows, one man learns to live, the other learns to love. But just who is teaching who?

Second Edition. First Edition released in 2012. No additional content has been added.

When I decided to read this book I was skeptical because it was free on Amazon Kindle and I always think to myself that those books are free for a reason. However, I was so desperate for a book to read I went ahead and chose this one because I would lose nothing except time if I didn't like it. Well, I am in love with this book. It is now in my top 3 m/m romances. It is about a doctor and painter, both of whom are missing something in their lives but they don't know what until they meet each other and begin to realize that the other one is the missing part. The pace was slow but in a good way. Ever so often I complain that authors only tell us, the readers, not show us that the characters are falling in love. Not with this book. There are so many instances of (non-sexual) intimacy and bonding and us seeing how the characters grow over time. The book was narrated in the first person by Nathan. Usually I don't like this style because I don't get an insight of the other hero/heroine but it actually worked in this case for me. There are not any plot twists and suspense but I didn't care because I wasn't in the mood for any. I was in the mood for a light, fluffy lover story with an HEA and that is exactly what I got. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND this book if you just want to read something warm and fuzzy and romantic (yep, candles and all) with an HEA. There were several love scenes but they didn't make you feel like you were reading porn. I noticed one grammatical error and one sentence that didn't make sense but the story was so enjoyable that I just overlooked that. Definitely a gem. I believe that I'll re-read it.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book and didn’t put it down until I was done. I thought it was well written, as is often the case with this author. Some editing issues, not too bad. Mostly just some typos and switching between past and present tense. There was a point where Nathan flicked Trent with his shirt but it said Trent grabbed “the dish towel” from him. Not sure how I felt about the fact that though Nathan’s house guest is mentioned in the description, Nathan didn’t find out until about a half hour before he got to the house. He should’ve been warned beforehand. Also, in the epilogue (tiny spoiler starts now in case you want to jump to next paragraph) Nathan told his family that they’d not made any plans or set any dates, but they had just decided that they would get married in a month’s time during Trent’s exhibition in Montreal.

Not too much drama or conflict here, just some confusing emotions (which coming from Trent confused me as much as Nathan). I liked both of the MCs and all of the supporting characters, everybody pretty much fit in together. I thought it was interesting that rather than just saying Nathan had only been attracted to women and never men before Trent, he kind of saw himself as asexual and not being attracted to anyone of any sex. Trent was the only one that did it for him. I loved that there was an epilogue (I’m a sucker for epilogues) and loved how everything worked out. I think it would’ve been better written either in 3rd person or alternating POVs, though. Nathan’s POV didn’t give insight into what Trent thought or felt.

I would say that say that the 2 things in the story that actually kind of bothered me were things that maybe not all readers would have a problem with or be sensitive to. One was right before they came out as a couple to Nathan’s family, as Nathan got dressed, in his head he thought that “now I sounded gay”, because he was paying more attention to what he was wearing. Why couldn’t he just be concerned about looking decent? That was weird. The second was when Nathan was first introduced to Dani, she apparently went all ga-ga and googly-eyed in his presence, but rather than see it that way, he assumed she had “diminished learning capabilities” (um, okay…). Trent of course, thought that was hilarious, and the 2 of them often made fun of Dani behind her back. When Nathan mentioned that Dani had asked him out, Trent made the comment, “If I had known, I could have arranged the Special Bus for you.” What? Then “he pretended to make the dazed, diminished learning capabilities face” and they both laughed. Now anyone with good sense knows it’s not funny to joke about learning disabilities, so it bothered me when there were several jokes about the whole thing in this book. This section in particular rubbed me a bit raw.

I absofreakinglutely love this book! I laughed....I cried...I had heart twinges. These two were hot!!!!

Great storyline, it flowed really well. The dialogue between characters was entertaining and the characters themselves was so engaging. I couldn't help but fall in love with them.

One thing I miss was that this was written in a single pov. I would have loved to have seen both characters pov. This was written as 1st person which made me feel as if I was part of the story.

There was heartache, tears, defeat, redemption, emotional growth, romance, laughter, and most of all love. oh!!! Can't forget the hot steamy sex, these boys could really a team it up. I dismiss though getting to see Nathan top. It hinted about up happening but we never got to read about it.

All in all a fantastic read.

This is a bit of a departure for an insta-love-but-I-don't-trust-you MM romance. You have Nathan, a practically virgin surgeon who's burned out in a huge Boston hospital and taken a position in rural Maine. You have Trent, a hot Texas hunk who is taking temporary residence in the doctor's new home because it comes with the doctor's position but needed painting and repairs. How fortunate that Trent is a housepainter as well as an artistic painter, and that Nathan is a very vulnerable puppy.

Speaking of which, there's a dog involved, and though not a puppy he turns out to be critical to the romance, and the resolution.

I loved the way this book moved--the narrative is uncomplicated but detailed enough so that you get to know not only Nathan and Trent but also most of the supporting players. You also get a great feeling for the Maine countryside as well as the nooks and crannies of Boston when our guys visit there.

There is some angst that sort of smashes into the relationship (woof! woof!) and there are some doubts in both their minds that promises work. But in the end this is N.R. Walker at her best, a loving, moving, totally logical romance that tingles your body every step of the way.

As always with stories by her this book delivers on so many levels.
You start reading and think the title simply applies to Nathan but the more the arc opens up the more you realise that it applies to both the main characters!
How she develops the story from the outset is key to getting the reader involved from the beginning and you are invested from the moment you start reading.
I have downloaded several of her books over the last few years and this one doesn't disappoint...brilliant and emotional...will continue to read them in the future because of how well developed the characters are and how powerful her story lines are.
