But the Bureau isn’t done with Bridget yet as she’s pulled in to consult on a disturbing string of homicides which bear a startling resemblance to a series of murders committed by a man since convicted and executed for his crimes.
Still grappling with her own troubled past, and unsure about her future with the Bureau, Bridget sets off on a desperate mission to stop the evil plans of a dead man before he sends another victim to the grave.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2024A chilling case that hits close to home for Bridget. Way back when she was finishing up her studies to become a doctor of psychology she interviewed a serial killer that her father had caught. She wanted to know why he did what he did, what caused him to go down that path. Many years later after a stint with the BAU and now in private practice Bridget is brought into a cause when someone starts killing again in the exact same way of the man long dead who was the focus of her thesis. Putting aside bad dreams and fears Bridget agrees to help find this new man before he can terrorize like his predecessor.
Chilling is a very apt descriptor for this book. I’ve read a few of the later books in the series I was very excited to see how it all started. I was not disappointed in the least. Heart pounding, mind boggling, gritty thriller/mystery case. I love the details that the author brings in, not just the police procedure but the perspectives of not only our heroine Bridget but our killer as well. You get both sides of the story playing out in real time. It’s exciting, scary, and fabulous going on the adventure. A series I highly recommend for all thriller, police procedural and mystery fans!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024This was a heart pounding, fast action thriller from start to finish! Studying a serial killer, witnessing his execution and then learning a disciple is replicating those murders for a second coming. Bridget Bishop completed her dissertation on the serial killer and finds herself abducted by the disciple. Action from beginning to end- a great story!!! I’m going to read book 2!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2024A man who killed seven women was executed and Bridget witnessed the execution. Several years passed and a woman who had been missing was found murdered. The crime had many similarities with the man who was executed. A task force was set up and Bridget was a consultant. Great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2022A small town is plagued with a serial killer who seems to be continuing his reign of terror from the grave! Will truth be told? Will more young women die before the disciple is found?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2024I was captivated by the twists and turns of this book and ready to read the second book of series. It was different from other mysteries,I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Physic stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024Let me just say that I love stories with multiple points of view, but this story was way over the top. It felt like I spent time inside every single character’s head. It made it hard to get to know any of the characters on a deeper level.
Mild spoiler alert!
The author went out of her way to conceal the killer’s identity, even when in the killer’s point of view he was referred to as ‘the disciple’, therefore it was irksome to me that when the killer was finally unmasked, it was not any character that had been mentioned before. What was the purpose of masking his identity?
Overall an easy read, held my attention even if I was rolling my eyes quite a bit throughout the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense thriller - a great first book in a long series
Having previously enjoyed the Bailey Flynn series so far I decided to try the older Bridget Bishop series by the same author. I wasn't disappointed. Melinda Woodhall writes crime thrillers featuring strong women who solve disturbing crimes. Bridget Bishop is a criminal profiler who, when she was still learning, studied a serial killer who kidnapped women and strangled them one at a time. Now it's happening again. The crimes as described from the points of view of the killer and victims, are suitably horrific for the reader to root for Bridget, having been cajoled back to the FBI to he!p in the hunt and capture of the psychotic copycat. I like Bridget, as a very intelligent and strong woman who is also vulnerable. There is romance hovering around the edge for her, that I expect will develop in book 2. The only thing I didn't like was the un!likely fling between one of the FBI agents and an antagonistic, confrontational prosecutor who belittles the idea of a profiler as a legitimate profession. Altogether good enough that I want to read this whole series
