Letting Him In (Wingstead Series) Kindle Edition
Toby
My best friend—my family in almost every sense of the word—died. My heart aches for losing him.
The hurt I felt was momentarily lifted by the anger that surged inside me at hearing his half-brother's lies.
I knew of him, but very little. What I did know was how insignificant he was in Damon's life. Yet here he is, a thorn in my side.
The bastard infuriates me, so why am I attracted to him?
Mac
Part of me was glad he was dead. He robbed me of who I am, and when compared to each other, he was always the favored one.
After all this time, I was sick of the bull crap.
I need to know what made him so special—so perfect in our father's eyes. I need to know everything he was hiding.
Come to find out, his loyal friend—one who I was quickly becoming attached to—plays more of a role than I thought.
Letting Him In is an opposites attract, enemies to lovers, small town M/M adult romance story with some steamy moments. This standalone novel takes place in Autumn and has a HEA.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2023As the book starts, Damon was the dead hero/best friend, while Mac was the long lost brother only arriving at the burial. Toby had a journey ahead of him, from deception to clarity, from a false friendship to a true love, from a dead brother to the love of his life. There a moments when you feel this relationship is failing to really take hold. There are times you want to kick them both. Yet, they both grow and find their places in each others’ lives. This is a HEA, and I always feel good when I find myself smiling as a book keeps the love alive…

After the death of his BFF, Toby retreats into himself to morn the loss. But at the funeral, he notices a man in a pink shirt that bears a striking resemblance to the man being buried, Damon.
Once back home, Toby just wants to burrow himself under the covers of his bed and sleep. This plan is interrupted by a adamant knocking on his front door.
Begrudgingly answering the door, he sees the man in the pink shirt (one definitely NOT appropriate for a funeral) on his doorstep.
Introducing himself as Damon's brother, Mac, Toby is stunned. Damon had never mentioned he had a brother! Disgruntled and angry, Mac barges into the house demanding an explanation.
What unfolds is the truth that Damon had kept from Toby for years. Not only did Damon keep Mac's presence hidden, but many other things were secreted away from Toby.
Toby reluctantly agrees to let Mac stay in his home, but soon finds the man to flirty for his taste, even though Toby is a part-time closeted gay man who finds Mac extremely handsome.
As the days go by, the two strangers become to know each other and an unavoidable attraction insues. At this point, the author introduces several new characters and subplots, all with important meaning to the story.
Landon, a fellow teacher at Toby's workplace, has been lusting after Toby since he first layer eyes upon him. Toby feels the same way towards Landon.
When Toby and Mac have a huge argument over Landon, as well as Toby and Damon's TRUE relationship, Mac decides to leave and return to his home, forgetting his commitment to the school's basketball coach to coach a totally newly formed youth basketball team. This delays his departure, leading to the Toby and Mac unraveling Damon's sorted past. And possibly the explanation for his death.
After Mac discovers a hidden zip drive in Damon's bedroom and reads its contents, he and Toby untangle Damon's secret second life, which crushes Toby. But this time Mac is there for him and offers comfort.
What, exactly, was Damon hiding? Why had he kept Mac's existence a secret and stay estranged from his brother?
The final plot twist pushes Toby and Mac closer together, leading to their HFN ending. And yes, Mac does stay at Toby's home, the only difference being that he also moved into his bedroom, too.
A crisp and refreshing tale that was very enjoyable to read. Good character development, moderate heat and romance, excellent plotting and flowing dialog pushed this book's rating upward. I found no editing errors to disrupt to book's flow, which also enhanced my rating.
A highly recommended book for those who like this genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2024At his best friend, Damon 's funeral, Toby meets Mac, Damon's half brother. Toby finds an entirely different person than he expects, and finds that Damon wasn't quite the good friend that he thought.
Startlingly unexpected story. Excellent characters and surprisingly moving
Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2022Maybe 3.5. Toby and Mac get off on the wrong foot from the beginning and it doesn't get any better. They keep sabotaging any relationship between them with wrong assumptions and failing to communicate with each other. Quite frankly, I didn't really like any of the characters in the story. They didn't seem like anyone I would want to know. Both main characters were so badly damaged psychologically that I found it hard to believe they should be together. I know that is very subjective, so other readers who like to read about these kinds of damaged characters will probably like this story. - Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2022Toby and Mac meet for the first time at Mac's half brother's Damon's funeral. Damon had been Toby's best friend. They have very different recollections of who Damon was. For Toby he was the best friend who was there for him. Mac saw Damon as a manipulative jerk. Being in Mac' presence helps Toby to begin to see the true nature of who Damon was and he comes to realize it was not what he thought. This was an angsty and sobering story about what happens when the truth changes the way you view the world. As Toby comes to new realizations a way is made for him and Mac to grow closer and to work to learn to trust and communicate so they can be together in a more authentic way. This was important, especially given what Toby learns about the friendship with Damon that turned out not to be what he thought it was.

Loved this story. Two broken, lonely people who find love and acceptance. I'd really enjoy a bonus or two or even a sequel.
