4.4 out of 5 stars 2,817 ratings

Sometimes the road to happiness is longer than we’d like …

At fourteen, Isla Mackenzie has her life all planned out. She’s going to be an artist and marry her best friend, Logan.

Logan Donnell also has a plan. When he grows up he’s going to join his dad’s business and marry his best friend, Isla.

By the time they’re eighteen, the two of them are inseparable. The future looks bright. Everything feels perfect.

But when tragedy strikes, fate sets the pair on a different course.

While circumstances keep Logan and Isla apart, their bond is not so easily broken.

The course of true love might not run smoothly but a bumpy road can still take you exactly where you’re supposed to be …

While this is the second book in the Loch Lannick series it can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

I could not put this story down. I was so excited to see how it would end. Really a great read.

The 2nd book in the series and I enjoyed it immensely. I found it so frustrating however since Island and Logan so seldom were on the same page in their relationship, making assumptions that were often wrong, listening to others who had also made assumptions. Drove me crazy! Why didn't they just talk to each other? I know, that was the whole point, wasn't it. And I do remember that was a common theme in relationships at that age.

The Mackenzie family is wonderful...I feel like I could just walk right in, order a cottage pie, and feel completely at home.

I wasn't sure, at first, if starting the story when they were kids, would keep my interest. But I was hooked pretty quick. The characters were easy to love.

I too got caught up in this exceedingly tangled romance between Isla and Logan. It took me back to when I started falling in love with my husband (of 53 years now!). I remember being so relieved when he said, "No games. OK?" Honesty and trust make all the difference in relationships. Now, admittedly, we were much older than this couple and had that happened in this book, it would have been about three pages long!
The tangling began with the very young, impressionable ages of this couple. Obviously, Logan totally came apart causing their first split. Then, he really needed bereavement counselling, possibly group or professional...more than a plate of food and a hug or two.
Therefore, I must agree with another reviewer about the lack of behavioral guidance from Isla's parents. Though they seemed like very nice people, I do think their lack of moral supervision and laissez faire attitude didn't help this young couple at all. Karla B.

This is the second book set in a small (fictional) village on the Isle of Skye. The story is about Isla, the second daughter and artist and Logan, her best friend from when they were 12 years old. I loved the characters, story and setting, but the misunderstandings and angst were just too much for me. I wanted to shout at them to just talk to each other and not just jump to (wrong) conclusions!
I’ll sample the 3rd book before buying…like I said, the setting and characters are very likeable but I can do with less angst.

It's an interesting and thorough character study of a family and it's ups and downs. It's a story on risk and opening up to friendship and love. It's a story about what happens when people make assumptions and don't talk to one another. It's a story about misdirected and selfish love.
It's also a story about what happens when parents are more friends to their children than the parent as is their responsibility. And it's a story about the lack of instruction and training on morals and appropriate behaviour for children and young people when parents don't set up rules or provide guidance on living.
It has it all very well put in a good story!

I really got wrapped up in this warm and loving family. So caring about one another and their friends and significant others. But why was it so hard for Isla to tell Logan the truth about her feelings for him? Orr for her to believe others who saw Logan’s love for her? Or for Logan to be honest with her? It drove me crazy. Maybe this book is geared more towards young women. I’m hooked anyway, and will read more of them!

Having visited Scotland - Skye, and Eilean Donan Castle( We did pay to get in) I knew I had to read this book when I saw the cover. I didn't realize how quickly I'd fall in love with the characters as well as the setting. I'm glad to know I can continue to follow these characters in subsequent books. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to them when the book ended.

Giving another sister’s perspective on the same events as book one, as well as the earlier years of the family, this book easily rivals the first as another pure delight. I can’t wait to download the next in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, very well written story but...

... I found myself on edge waiting for whatever the "tragedy" that was to come. After the experience with Hannah Ellis's tragedy in the Lucy Mitchell series second book, I had huge trepidation that it wasn't going to be easy content to deal with. This in turn didn't foster positivity on this journey.

I don't like reading tragic romance, in fact I detest it. I won't go anywhere near Nicholas Sparks novels for this very reason. I want light hearted, feel good, 'happy ever after' entertainment in a romance novel. I don't want to be ugly crying and getting depressed over fictional content. I read romance to escape from the many tragic issues in the real world.

If you like that kind of emotional roller-coaster then you'll probably enjoy this book. But for me this story was more about enduring it versus enjoying it for the sake of continuity of the Loch Lannick series. Hannah Ellis had done such a brilliant job with the Hope Cove series, that I wanted to experience that awesomeness again.

I gave it a 5 star rating regardless, because I'm an atypical oddball and most people won't have the same emotional issues with it as I did. Unless they're on the spectrum and feel things more deeply than the average person too. The character Scarlett in the Hope Cove series would get me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovable characters in a well woven plot.

This was deeper than just a quick beach read. I fell in love with the characters, having a sense that I’d joined their family and friends group. Hannah’s story telling method is so rich and full of life. I always feel like I’m in the story whereas some similar stories by other authors feel more cold and disconnected. The prolonged romantic tension was well done as well. I was hesitant to pick this one up because the main characters are so much younger than me, but I’m so glad that I gave it a chance. I strongly suggest this book to others.

The whole Loch Lannich series were an easy and memorable read. The characters were easily believable telling different and compelling stories that were all linked. All in all a very good, enjoyable, light reading.
Locations were easily identifiable for those who know the area of Wester Ross and Skye.
    Well written.
