George Orton and Charles Spooner brought joy to millions through beautiful and inventive fairground rides made in their home town, Burton-on-Trent.

During their heyday in the late 19th and early 20th centuries they assembled a crack team of artists, creatives and craftsmen who brought their visions to life and became the envy of manufacturers around the country.

Top showmen of the time flocked to see their latest rides and commission them to create bespoke wonders for them.

Fairground enthusiasts across the world have kept the names Orton and Spooner alive. The story of how they blazed a trail in improving transportation, manufacturing methods and engineering processes – as well as developing cinemas - is less well known. They were also pioneers of modern-day marketing and public relations techniques.

Elaine Pritchard tells the story of the men behind the magic in this richly illustrated book featuring images generously lent by archives and personal collectors, many of which have not previously appeared in books.
