The Long Winter of Miðgarðr : A Tale from Norvegr (Tales from Norvegr) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 51 ratings

Three disparate women; one common goal: survive.

Jorunn holds fast to duty and honor. The stalwart shieldmaiden is admired for her skill and courage in a harsh landscape beset by dangers and enemies. Would she sacrifice it all for the love of a beautiful, mysterious woman?

Madlen, a revered holy sister of the Eldríss Hringr, bears a sacred mission to guard Miðgarðr from Surtr and the monstrous fire giants of Muspelheim on an island dominated by a volcanic passage between the realms. While inexplicably drawn to Jorunn, her obligation to the sisters and their tasks must remain her priority.

Young, quick-witted, and sharp-tongued Yngvi, forced into a marriage she didn’t want, would much rather be safeguarding the world with Jorunn and Madlen. However, she loves her children with a fierce passion that guides her every action.

Omens, prophecies, and visions from the gods hint at monstrous threats looming over the land—attacks by the
draugr of folklore and a bitter, dark winter to surpass previous ones. When the unthinkable happens, many proclaim Ragnarök has come. Can Jorunn’s, Madlen’s, and Yngvi’s diverse talents save their kingdom, or will the gloomy nightmare spell the end of mankind?

Captivating story-teller Edale Lane presents another
Tale from Norvegr, a thrilling historical fantasy kissed by sapphic romance. Micheal Crichton’s Eaters of the Dead (The 13th Warrior) meets George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones with lesbians! If you enjoy watching the past unfold through epic battles, historic disasters, and the love and perseverance of strong women, don’t miss The Long Winter of Miðgarðr.

I loved this book! If you are a fan of strong, dedicated, honorable, compassionate female characters who won’t be pushed into any mold, stories based on historical events mixed with Nordic/Viking mythology, wrapped in battles, personal struggles, and some romance - you have to read this book!

If you are reading this review chances are you have already read the book description - so I won’t repeat that information.

Jorunn is an amazing character - strong, loyal, decicated, but also keenly aware of everything that happens around her; she can be a brutal warrior one minute and in the next a compassionate friend.

Madlen and Yngvi are also courageous and dedicated women who, somewhat unintentionally, play important roles in the quest for survival of everyone in Midgardr.

Edale Lane has given us characters we can identify with, “feel” with, mourn with, rejoice with, and a few that we would like to “run through” with that sword.

The book includes beautifully illustrated maps of the lands from the story and a section of author’s notes giving detailed historical background used for the book.

Another addition is the Index of places, terms, and characters - which is very useful and it may be beneficial to read this before starting the story itself as the story uses quite a few terms that may be unknown to most readers.

Come along for the journey and you’ll experience deception, betrayal, battles, and communities banding together to survive the longest winter known to man at that time in history.

I read an Advance Copy of this book and am leaving this voluntary review based on my personal reading experience.

Life is hard for the people in this story as they struggle against rival warrior groups and the elements to protect themselves and provide enough food through what they grow and by fishing. But things are about to get harder. There are rumors of "monsters" rampaging through the countryside killing entire families and attacking towns - but are they just rumors? The weather also seems to be acting strangely and an island volcano no longer seems to be under the control of the Sisters who have long watched over it. The natural instability leads to political instability as well and alliances are fracturing and reforming in strange, unpredictable ways. Three strong, amazing women - a shieldmaiden, a holy sister and a smart, cunning young woman forced into marriage for political reasons have interesting connections with each other and with all the changes going on in the story. This was such an amazing read. I learned very early on that the author was not going to pull any punches and that I could never relax and assume I knew what was going to happen next. I went through the whole range of emotions with this one as I cheered on those fighting the good fight, cried for some who were lost (and cheered others getting what was coming to them, lol). An amazing roller coaster of a ride that I wouldn't have missed for the world.

I enjoyed this book, as I do all of Edale Lane’s. Though it was very long, and contained many confusing names and places, it was authentic, and I love the background information, glossary, and maps the author provides in the end. I’m questioning why the possible relationship between Rane and Yngvi was even mentioned? Otherwise, it was an engaging read if you like sapphic historical fiction, adventure and romance. I would have liked a few sex scenes between the two MC’s, given Madlen’s past, rather than the fade-to-black here, but that’s just personal preference.

Storytelling at its finest. Readers will be able to appreciate the extensive amount of research, the author, Edale Lane, has gone through to create more authenticity and originality for this book. While I can imagine the time period for which the book references, I am grateful to be living in the 21st century. Family, while it may be a challenge pronouncing many of the nouns, the written journey is worth it. Happy Reading

I loved this story. Great characters that are well written. Excellent grammar and spelling, which makes all the difference to me. It means the difference between a fair book and an excellent one. I hope to read more from the Tales from Notvegr.

Oh, how I loved this book. It has everything you could want. Action, love, disasters, political wrangling, treason, I could go on. This book is a sequel to the novella, Jorunn, Shieldmaiden of Hárfell. This book stands on its own, so you don’t have to read Jorunn, however I highly recommend it. Jorunn sets this book up wonderfully and is also a terrific read in the 6th century. As with Jorunn, the mythology is amazing. I’ve learned so much about Viking life. There are a lot of characters in this book, but I was never confused who was who and I found them all interesting. Edale Lane has created a wonderful Viking saga, and I will continue to read this series as long as they are published.
