Lords of Darkness: A Dark Romance (Darkness Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 3,815 ratings

There is no choosing… only begging.

The Lords own me, and they are never going to let me go. At least, that’s what they tell me. Lord Alaric Cross. Lord Gideon St. Claire. Lord Sterling Beauchamp. Lord Theodore Wolf. Four brooding men who make my worst nightmares seem tame.

To the public, they are titled aristocrats with royal lineage. In secret, they make up the Lords of Darkness—an ancient order that rules the underbelly of England with a lethal, iron fist, leaving skeletons in their wake. And as fate would have it, my father was the fifth Lord of Darkness. His sudden death means I am now a Lady of Darkness.

I refuse to go along with their twisted games. I will never fall to my knees before them, even when they insist on breaking me for pleasure. But like all serpents coiling around their target, they sink their vicious fangs in, possessing my mind, body, and soul.

They may think they can win, but all they’ve done is awaken a force that’s capable of breaking
them. Deep down, I’ve always been my father’s daughter—a Lady of Darkness.

After all, it’s in my blood.

Lords of Darkness is book one in a dark romance series where the heroine doesn't have to choose a love interest. Please note: this book is dark. You will love the heroes, and then you will hate them before you love them again. If you’re looking for villains who eventually turn good, that doesn’t happen in this book. They are the antithesis to a romantic hero in every way. Proceed with caution. You've been warned...

The author touts this series a very dark, and it certainly is. She does, however, do a masterful job writing the characters, the action, and the plot is a way that makes this a book worth reading. I'm not sure I would call it an "enjoyable" read, but it certain is thought and emotion evoking.

However, I strongly object to the wording she uses to describe the lead female's psychological problems. As noted in the "title", dissociation is NOT psychosis and flashbacks are NOT hallucinations. She has just add additional, and incorrect, pain to those who have already suffered unimaginable trauma. For one thing, dissociation is protective of the individual--either by compartmentalizing different parts of the trauma (PTSD) or through temporary memory loss. Psychosis is due to chemical and/or biological dysfunction. She obviously cannot change what is written in a book already in circulation, but I would hope she makes this error clear in other ways (?web page, author's page, any other appropriate place).

This book as well written and had a good back bone. The characters all seemed to have their own interesting backstories and personalities however the story felt a little too rushed in parts that should have been slowed down and drug out and too slow on parts that I wanted to skim over which resulted in a climax that felt a little lackluster. However I think that might have just been because it was intended as the first book in a series so I still have hope for the future of this series! :)

The main characters of this story are Sterling, Theo, Alaric & Gideon. They’re AKA "LORDS OF DARKNESS", which is a type of underworld criminal organization that’s been around for 1,000 years ! There’s always been 5 members. The only ppl that know they belong to this organization are other criminals who are in their own criminal underworld organization ! They’re called lords because of their British aristocracy heritage. They’re peers of the realm. They each have their own unique skill set such as computers, weapons, etc. Harlow is the newest edition in this exclusive men’s club. She is the daughter of Lord Blackwell. He was the leader of the crew & was killed by them due to him betraying them all. She had to take his place. If I say anything else then I’ll be giving away spoilers & I can’t abide when ppl do that. I do love a surprise but I’ll say this much…to those dear, fellow readers who love dark chocolate & loves the spicy side of life, then look no further. This book delivers & then some on the VERY dark & delicious not to mention with a side of EXTRA spicy. The ending ends on a MAJOR cliffhanger & wild horses couldn’t keep from reading the rest of the books in this series! This book is for all of us who aren’t afraid to take a walk on the wild side ! Someone plz que "The Wild Side" by Motley Crue!

PLEASE READ TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING THIS BOOK

Lords of darkness it’s one hell of a book. I love everything about this book and even the cliffhanger it ends with. I know this style of book it’s one one of my favorites. It has all of the tropes I love, the anger, the suffering, the strength, everything. The MCs are great each with their own personalities and I love that I can’t choose between the MMCs because I love them all. I love the FMC even though she’s just 18 the mentality she has it’s not one of an 18 year old and I love that about this story, it didn’t feel like she was that age and for my preference I like that. I couldn’t stop thinking about this book when I finish it and definitely started the second right away. I could definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a RH, with enemies to lovers and strong FMC. I will be reading this book again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loved the book, disliked Harlow
Reviewed in Spain on January 24, 2023
I will be honest, I don't understand where Harlow's hate and need to destroy the Lords came from. Yes, they killed your father, a father who left you to fend for yourself and who never cared or trusted you. These men explained everything to her, did what her father should have and explained he was a traitor. They didn't do anything to her, were honest from the beginning, took her in, trained and protected her. So I get the animosity at first, but as the book progressed and they got closer, felt attracted to eachother and so on. Holding onto it seems nonsensical. Yes, they tested her harshly but it is a harsh life and the "initiation" was a favor tbh. She didn't even seem to know what she wanted. Hope the second redeems her a bit because her character annoyed me too much. Meanwhile they were fun, dark, loyal and caring, a Lethal combination. I loved the story line but her character messed everything for me

    Wow! Wow! Wow!

I am not okay after that ending!

BUT I absolutely loved the book! Every page, every heartbreaking detail kept me gripped and I didn't-couldn't stop reading.

Masterfully written and the story was heart pounding good, with enough spice to keep you damp (if you know what I mean).

I'm so glad the next book is out soon because waiting even this long will be torture...but who doesn't like a bit of that right?!?!

This book comes with a trigger and content warning, please head the authors note

When the father pays for his sins, it sets forth in motion a chain of events, for Harlow is about to discover a world she never knew existed.

After the untimely demise of her father, Harlow returns home to get his affairs in order, but also to help her step-mother Cecilia and her brother Archie. She gets this unsettling feeling that someone is watching her, but she puts it behind her.

At her father’s service, she gets a glimpse of Lord Alaric, Lord Gideon, Lord Sterling and Lord Theo, they give her an unsettling feeling, one she knows deep down has something to do with her father.

When Alaric, Gideon, Sterling and Theo make themselves known to Harlow, she is frightened by their presence but not there tactics when they tell her that she is next in line to take her father’s mantel, not as a Lord, but as a Lady of Darkness. They share with her the history of there reign, what they do, as things begin to click into place for Harlow.

Harlow attempt to compromise in her situation, but they are resolute in there decisions, to keep her brother safe she accepts her place within there ranks.
On there word, she is thrusted into a life that she wants no part of, forced to partake in tasks as part of the initiation process. She sees them for who they are, not hiding what it is that they do, that this life, there is no escape.

One thing they don’t realise is that Harlow is prone to panic attacks, they don’t know why, and one night things take a turn for the worse, when they make a grave mistake, but with quick thinking actions they are able to reverse the effects, which leaves them with more questions and answers.

The more questions Harlow asks, the more frustrated that they are with her and her reasoning, in order to protect her they need her fully acclimated in there ways, but her resistance is pushing there limits and they take drastic action.

After a background check do they discover the trauma that Harlow endured herself coupled with the loss of her mother, it’s in this moment that they make a decision that will alter the relationship between them all.

And when they put Harlow through a rigorous test, putting her through her paces to she how she can handle herself, it takes an unexpected turn between her and Sterling, when he discovers she has a praise kink and likes being told what to do, that he takes advantage of the adrenaline coursing through her veins, bringing themselves both pleasure.

Now that Harlow, has been made the Lady of Blackwell Manor officially, she begins to make plans to return to New York, but when her belongings turn up, it brings up feelings of anger, that every aspect of her life is being controlled by them, that she devises a plan to make them pay. But it is not til later that she discovers they have access her electronics, however it doesn’t deter her with her plans.

Harlow makes a snap decision, when she puts on a show for Alaric, he is affected by every little thing that she does, she can see him holding onto his tightly leashed emotions, until he snaps, claiming all of her in the most exquisite way possible, very well aware of her kinks he takes full advantage of, there inhibitions sated in the most sensual of ways.

What happens next, there is no recourse, when Harlow comes face to face with her fear, when she is confronted with the one person who was responsible, the one who hurt her and took her mother from her, dose she finally face her demons, but it was never her choice, for the choice was forced upon her, taken away from her, not allowing her to make the decision herself, for when she would be ready to face the nightmare that haunts her dreams.

From there it leads Harlow to make a decision that she will most likely not be able come back from, and when Alaric, Gideon, Sterling and Theo discover her attempt to hurt them, do they become united in there own decision to follow through with what Harlow had planned, leaving her no choice to accept the fall out of what happens next.

This story is told from multiple POV, we get to see Harlow, Alaric, Gideon, Sterling and Theo navigate the treacherous paths they walk, what shapes these characters, giving readers insight to who they are flaws and all, that they are in fact humans who feel but handle what has happened to them differently.

This book has it all the slow burn romance, possessive dominant alpha males, a bratty heroine, revenge, vengeance, violence, defiance, manipulation, adrenaline seeking suspense, jealousy, twists, truths, and betrayal.

And the way Sterling and Harlow, and Alaric and Harlow came together, the tensions were palpable, that hallway and bedroom scene was blazing hot, downright dirty and physical, it had all the pleasure and passion one would expect, for they give and take from the other, what they need, for her presence is causing discord between the brother’s, enticing feelings inside them, that they are having a hard time making sense of, and I very much look forward to seeing where they all end up next!

Highly recommend this author and book!
