Lost Girls: A fast paced, gripping thriller novel (Detective Kim Stone Crime Thriller Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 28,247 ratings

Two girls go missing. Only one will return.

The couple that offers the highest amount will see their daughter again. The losing couple will not. Make no mistake. One child will die.

When nine-year-old best friends Charlie and Amy disappear, two families are plunged into a living nightmare. A text message confirms the unthinkable; that the girls are the victims of a terrifying kidnapping.

And when a second text message pits the two families against each other for the life of their children, the clock starts ticking for
Detective Kim Stone and the squad.

Seemingly outwitted at every turn, as they uncover a trail of bodies, Stone realises that these ruthless killers might be the deadliest she has ever faced. And that their chances of bringing the girls home alive, are getting smaller by the hour…

Untangling a dark web of secrets from the families’ past might hold the key to solving this case. But can Kim stay alive long enough to do so? Or will someone’s child pay the ultimate price?

An utterly addictive thriller from the No.1 bestseller Angela Marsons.

Angela Marsons is the Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of the DI Kim Stone series and her books have sold more than 5 million in 7 years.

She lives in Worcestershire with her partner and their 2 cheeky Golden Retrievers.

She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read "Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people's".

After years of writing relationship based stories (The Forgotten Woman and Dear Mother) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.

She is signed to Bookouture.com for a total of 28 books in the Kim Stone series and her books have been translated into 30 languages.

Many of her books, including Blood Lines, Dead Souls, Broken Bones, Fatal Promise and Dead Memories reached the #1 spot on Amazon on pre-orders alone and the translation of Dead Souls, La Verita Sepolte, recently won the prestigious Primo Bancarella award.

A crime thriller about a case of double child kidnapping that presents a different dynamic of a police investigation. The author weaves numerous scenarios into the investigation dynamic that both the reader and Kim's team are required to wade through as they try and solve the crime and bring the children home. Ms. Marsons does a very good job of taking the reader on a journey through a crime investigation filled with complications (as seen through Kim's eyes), team dynamics (two new members) and crime solution intrigue (why a double kidnapping? ).
The third book in the DI Kim Stone series starts with the kidnapping of two young girls, childhood friends Charlie Timmons and Amy Hanson. With the exception of the above, I prefer to let Ms. Marsons take the reader on a journey through the scenarios. Ms. Marsons exposes more of Kim's childhood history, adds two new members to Kim's team dynamic and adds a twist to what starts out as a conventional child kidnapping (if child kidnapping can be termed conventional). The journey is fast paced, intriguing, emotional (good and bad) and builds to a conclusion that allows the reader to use their imagination (Kim with a social life??).
At the end of the book "Evil Games", the reader is left to wonder about the personal security of Kim's emotional building blocks. Compared to "Evil Games", this book does little to satisfy the readers appetite for more of "Who is Kim?". What this book does do is present a unique child kidnapping scenario and adds to Kim's team dynamic. The readers' imagination is tweaked and we are left with "What is next?" and asking for more. A really good read, highly recommended and I eagerly await the next installment.

Lost Girls is the third installment of Marsons's Kim Stone series. In this go round, DI Stone is investigating the kidnapping of two young girls, best friends from fairly well of families. This sort of situation isn't generally in Stone's wheelhouse, but an old connection to the mother of one of the girls prompts her to insist that Kim head the investigation. The kidnappers' only communication is a few well timed, vague, and disturbing texts. An almost unheard of demand is made, and Kim realizes she is not only fighting the clock, but also her for her sanity, as this case causes things long since buried to fight their way to the surface.

Overall, this was a highly enjoyable book. I loved Marsons's first Kim Stone novel, but was quite disappointed with the second one. This one really got me back on track. I was hooked from the start and it was incredibly hard to put this one down. Once again, Marsons takes would could be a simple kidnapping/ransom case, but gives it a twist that keeps you thinking about this quandary long after the book is over.

Marsons is a master of pacing. She is like Hansel and Gretal, always giving you just enough to keep you going, but not enough to fill you up. You always want more. And her character development is really divine. I felt like I knew and understood each one of the characters in this book, and I always want to know more. Kim is truly a heroine you can root for. She's not perfect, but you she's relatable. I love how her relationship with Bryant grows in each installment.

My only qualms with this book - While I like that she will write different chapters from different character's points of view, I don't necessarily like when the chapters are written from the bad guy's point of view. At least not when said bad guy is a sadistic killer. I get wanting to let the readers know what is going on on the other side of things, but taking too deep a look into a mind that thinks such sick things is a bit off putting.

Also, I felt that the big reveal of "whodunit" at the end was a bit far fetched and unbelievable. I just really didn't think the motivation rang true, and it came upon me a little too quickly.

Other than that, the book was phenomenal. Well written, intriguing plot, mostly satisfying ending.

I've read all Angela Marsons' books This one was riveting from the first page and never let go. Well written with a thorough understanding of how parents would react to the kidnapping. Brave little girls who loved each other and all four were strong beyond their years. Love Kim Stone she has her issues though damaged she's managed to make a life for herself true it involves helping others rather than herself but she's making progress.

The premise is two girls are kidnapped only one will be returned alive, parents and close friends being forced to bid against each other for the return safely. There are three people involved, one a sadistic killer who has been promised Charlie and Amy the nine year old victims, the "brains" behind the kidnapping who is in for the money and finally the third alpha who is a mystery until the end.

This isn't the first kidnapping, a year ago instigator. a year ago Suzie and Emily were taken and held for ransom again only one would be returned but something happened and Emily is set free with Suzie presumed dead. There is also a sub plot involving a young man from the streets who was killed by gang members that killing too is solved which almost felt like an afterthought.

Kim and her team along with specialized members of the Midlands Police struggle against almost hopeless odds in bringing both girls home safely.
As they sift through what few clues they contact the parents of the first two kidnap victims opening wounds for both the mother whose child was nv never returned and the surviving girl who's life is forever changed. I"m usually pretty good at seeing the "bad" guys but this one threw me.

All and all a very satisfying and thrilling read that leaves one satisfied and panting for her next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Narrativa um pouco arrastada, mas Kim arrasa!
Reviewed in Brazil on September 17, 2017
No entanto, eu me surpreendi com a história.

5.0 out of 5 stars The whole book is tense and there is a totally unexpected twist at the end.
Reviewed in Australia on February 11, 2025
The third book in this great series.

Two young girls go missing and their kidnappers offer the parents a bidding war over how much they are prepared to pay to see their daughters again. The winner gets their child back, the loser does not. Or so they say. D.I.Kim Stone is determined that both girls will be found and the clock is ticking.

The whole book is tense and there is a totally unexpected twist at the end. Stone is determined and willing to bend rules in order to win. Her team is dedicated and ready to follow her lead anywhere. This is an excellently written and totally gripping read. Highly recommended.
