About the author

Nils Ödlund is originally Swedish, but lives these days in Cork, Ireland. He's an avid reader, gamer, and fan of geek-culture.
Ödlund picked up writing as a hobby, almost by accident, back in 2010, and it quickly grew into something of an obsession. In 2017 he decided to get serious about it, and in early 2018, he published his debut novella Emma's Story. Since then he's been working on the Lost Dogs series.
When not writing, Ödlund enjoys hiking through the Irish countryside, reading, or playing games.
Unlike every other author in the history of all authors ever (citation needed), Ödlund does not have a cat.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUndeserved Second Chance is the second of ten Lost Dogs Novels. It takes up right after the first book "Last Fight of the Old Hound" In which Roy inadvertently ruined his best friend's life by winning a prize fight. The guilt assails him and even though he has retired in luxury, he wants to help his friend. He is a wolf-shifter but Olund treats this as an inner personality in addition to a shape change. So he had "his wolf" have a dialog. A phone call sends him on a journey and quest in this novella. I'm certainly following Roy "The Wolf of the North" to see how this comes out.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThese books leave me with mixed feelings(those endings tho), but there is no denying the writing is excellent. At times lyrical, even. Roy is a fascinating character, and so very real. On to the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe journey of Roy has been an enjoyable one to follow so far, proving that once again the best characters are ones with flaws. No one really likes a perfect character who always does the right thing. Nils' style of writing is easy to read and a delight for those who love a well developed story. I'm looking forward to seeing where he goes with the rest of the series. I highly recommend this book! 10/10 would bang.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2019Format: KindleI want to read these books slowly and savor them but that is just impossible. They draw me in and make me care so much about the characters, that the ending comes too soon. Thank goodness I still have a few more ahead to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2019Format: KindleRoy has blown everything. He’s ruined the future for his best friend and placed his own in jeopardy. Then a phone call from the past changes everything and The Wolf of the North knows what he has to do, no matter what it might cost him or those he cares most about.
What I really liked:
The setting. This is what really makes the Lost Dogs series stand out for me. It is an urban fantasy, but set in a sci-fi world that is very much not our own. the clever mix of the familiar (things like jeans and smartphones) with the unfamiliar, alien races and places.
The characters. Having got to know Roy and Jen in the first story of this series, Last Fight of the Old Hound, it was great to pick up with them again. The author has created believable, real, characters. I like the way Roy really isn’t that good at thinking things through, considering consequences and seeing the bigger picture when he needs to and I love the way Roy’s inner-wolf is shown with it’s very different understanding of events.
The pace. Lots of taut action really moves this novella along at top speed. I found myself at the end before I realised it.
What I struggled with:
Mostly it was reaching the end and realising that was it. There was no real sense of ‘a story told’ just a random finish point after a few things have happened to the character. As such, this is not a ‘story’ as such it is more a transition from one character state/location to another. It is more like reading a few chapters from the middle of a book than a sequel to the first book, which was excellent.
The other thing I found rather pointless were the flashbacks. Maybe they have information that will be crucial in future books, but in this one, they felt to me more like interruptions to the story than additions to it.
Overall thoughts:
Read the first in the series, Last Fight of the Old Hound, you really should anyway it’s excellent, and then pick this one. But don’t expect any sense of resolution or ending in this novella, it is just a very short way-station on a much longer journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story to keep you wanting for more :D
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story was flowing without any boring bits. Wanna know more now! Got frustrated when there was nothing else to read about the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Character-driven story
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseUndeserved Second Chance picked right up where "Last Fight of the Old Hound" left. The book continues to focus on the main character Roy Van Waldenberger and we get to know him a little better, learn more about his past, his motivation, his reasoning, he becomes more fleshed out. There is action, yes, but not a lot of it, it's basically an inner and outer journey of the main character. And it ended way too soon.
On a sidenote: This might be the first book that I read mentioning that the main character soiled himself while unconscious. Which is realistic, but for some reason never mentioned.
That said, I can't wait to continue the series. Oh, and I really liked the cover art.
