Love, Utley: Love Letters Book One Kindle Edition
Hannah
Maddox Lovelace. The captivating football player I met in college.
The one I only knew for a week. A week that was… life-changing.
Until my phone rang, and I had no choice but to go home.
I left Maddox a letter, putting my feelings on paper, giving him my number, hoping he’d call.
But he didn’t call.
He never called.
He got drafted into the professional league and lived like a king while I stayed home and struggled to stay afloat.
I may have followed his career, but now that he’s retired from football, I’ve forced myself to stop thinking about him.
And it’s okay that I won’t ever see him again. That week in college was fifteen years ago.
I’m not in love with Maddox anymore.
I might even hate him.
Maddox
Hannah Utley. The name that’s haunted me since my senior year of college.
The girl who caught my attention with her wide eyes and freckled nose.
Who spent one week twisting up my insides until she stole a piece of my heart the night we got locked inside the campus library.
The girl who disappeared without a word.
It’s the name of the girl I’ve been trying to forget for fifteen years.
And it’s the name looking up at me from the résumé in my hand.
Because Hannah Utley works for the company I just purchased.
And that makes her mine. Whether she likes it or not.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just don't even have words for how much i LOVED this book!
The book starts at HOP College with Hannah Utley reliving what can be described as the greatest night of her life with Maddox Lovelace, shortly after that all comes crashing down as she learns her mom had a stroke and she leaves school to go home to take care of her and her business. She leaves a letter for Maddox explaining her sudden disappearance and hoping he'd call, but he doesn't and Hannah decides to continue her life.
Over a decade later, Hannah is an accountant at a company now owned by Minnesolar. While theyre conducting interviews for the current staff, Hannah learns that her new boss is non other than Maddox Lovelace, the man who disappeared from her life years ago. Maddox, not fully paying attention during the interviews, IMMEDIATELY recognizes Hannah as the "one that got away" .
Maddox immediately tries to get Hannah to speak to him, as his brain runs wild with questions and ideas of what her life is now.
After Brandon, the office creep invites them to lunch, along with other employees, Maddox sees this as his time to "learn more" about Hannah and use the group setting as an excuse. On the way back to the office, Brandon and Hannah get into a minor car accident on the way back to the office and Maddox, who was following behind them springs into action. Hannah is hesitant but accepts his help and allows him to take from the scene.
Shortly after, they begin spending more and more moments together, coffee in the morning, “employee lunch events” and they reconnect although both still confused about the past and why the other never called.
After a little spicy time in the office during a party, Brandon sees them leaving Hannah’s office and becomes suspicious but the two of them don’t seem to care. After starting to spend a lot of time together, they start to have conversations about what happened and Hannah brings up the letter and how Maddox never called her, after telling her he knew she got on the bus and Hannah telling him she never told anyone that, Maddox discovers that a girl who was obsessed with him in college, had actually taken the letter. This allows them to pick up where they left off essentially and rekindle.
They begin to bond with Hannah’s mother and niece who they have custody of since her cousin passed years ago. Chelsea, Hannah’s niece and Maddox’s harshest critic seems to adjust to him easily and the two get along like peas in a pod as well as her mom.
They decide to give being a couple a go and start spending more time together. However, while out at dinner one night with all his friends, Brandon spots the two of them. being the vengeful and spiteful person he is, he sends pictures of the two of them together to HR at Minnesolar causing them to let Hannah go.
Maddox, obviously furious, demands to know who sent the pictures but deep down he knows. After confronting Brandon, the two get into an altercation and Brandon is fired. Maddox and Hannah finally are able to put their relationship public and take the next steps towards their future.
Let me tell you, there isn't a single S.J. Tilly book that I havent enjoyed and this one is definitely top 3. Not only are the main characters so well written but the side characters who get their own chapters in the books are so well put together, its a nice change of pace from the story to get an outside perspective of whats going on with our main characters.

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
🩵 Another Tilly man to fall in love with? Sign a girl up. I truly think when you find a man written by SJ Tilly, it’s already a win! But reading about a new one? Whole other level of great!
🩵 Idk what happened, but I was barely 10% in and my heart was aching for these characters. They truly lived in a world of miscommunication - neither one of their faults - life circumstances 1 crazy people just getting in the way.
🩵 I enjoyed how both Maddox and Hannah navigated one another in this story. How they truly world to make sure it was known that they were eachothers missing life pieces.
🩵 I am and always will be a sucker for a man with a 🌶️ mouth - with a heart of gold and a little touch her and 💀 attitude!
🩵 Let’s also keep falling for the curvy FMC - she will always be valid and I see myself in them every time!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI don't think y'all are ready for the absolute swoon-fest that is contained within the covers of this book. If you've read anything by SJ, you know she's an absolute master of writing incredibly relatable FMCs and MMCs with just the right amount of alpha and protector vibes (sometimes more, but that's a different series than this one lol).
What would you do if you spent 15 years trying to forget the most amazing week of your life and *almost* succeeding.. only to show up for your job and come face-to-face with the man who never called all those years ago? This is Hannah's reality upon realizing that the man who just acquired her employer of the last 4 years is the man who imprinted himself on her heart and never looked back. Of course we get the story in dual-POV and seeing the way Maddox views their life-changing week and the way they're going to move forward working side-by-side is second-chance CATNIP.
What I love most about Hannah is how steadfastly she loves her family and will put them above all else without question. Life started throwing her curves the night she wanted to be Maddox's forever and it never stopped - but neither did Hannah. She's not opposed to fighting for herself and getting things done on her own. She knows her worth, she loves herself, and she's not afraid to go after what she wants professionally.. and personally.
MADDOX LOVELACE, Y'ALL. The man may have spent over a decade as a professional football player who achieved all of the personal goals he set out to.. but he's never stopped wondering what happened to the woman he thought could be his forever after their one perfect week together. The emotional spectrum the man experiences after seeing Hannah for the first time is everything. From trying to figure out why she did what she did, to trying to decide how he feels as her new boss, to realizing what he's going to do about finding her again.. every single second will make you fall in love with Maddox Lovelace - it's effortless and you will absolutely understand why Hannah is still thinking about him so many years later.
Other parts I really enjoyed were the relatability of how men act in an office space )incredibly on par with reality and to be clear, this is not a compliment, iykyk). I enjoyed the positive spin of the story as I feel too often second chance stories spend lots of page-time living in the negative aspects of missed chances and throwing blame, creating unnecessary angst and tension when two people clearly still feel so strongly for each other. Hannah's mom, Ruth, is hilarious and Chelsea is one of the best snarky teenage sidekicks. I REALLY liked meeting Maddox's friends and I have my speculations about future stories...
If you like:
- second chance that feels like an opportunity at a new beginning in the most positive way without dragging your heart down with lots of story time mourning what might have been
- stories that play out the dream scenario of what could happen when The One Who Got Away is dropped back in your life
- moments where he knows exactly what to say to make you (and the people who matter most to you) swoon with a healthy amount of spicy office moments..
.. you're going to really like this one. Maddox is in my top-5 Tilly-world men and I can't wait to see what happens next in the Love Letters series!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe spicy level was so good, I was like wow! I loved how they got a second chance and some obstacles came a long the way.
What killed it for me was that in her late 30 she didn’t put herself first and would have missed the opportunity to be with him cuz of her mom and niece.
Girl it’s time to live your life you’re an adult! Your mom made her life with your dad and now it’s your turn to leave the nest and do it 🤦🏻♀️ you sacrifice 15 years and now when u have a mother chance you won’t do it….

5.0 out of 5 stars such a great start to the series
Format: KindleVerified Purchase“That’s right, Little Bunny, you can run, but I’m going to chase.”
Listen, if S.J writes it it’s a guarantee that I will devour it and these characters will live rent free for the next while. Maddox and Hannah have such a special story and I couldn’t wait to see how it played out.
“You’ve been mine since that night in the library.”
These two shared an unforgettable week in university before Hannah disappears without a trace leaving Maddox with a lot of questions. 15 years later, he is surprised to find her working at the business he just bought. Once she is in his sets again, he is on a mission to make her his because after all the time, he still craves her like his next breathe.
“Mad Dog Maddox was impressive in his twenties, but in his thirties, he’s a force.”
I loved watching them reconnect and see that their chemistry has just gotten hotter during the years they were apart. Hannah has spent years taking on her family responsibilities and it was great to see someone who is solely focused on supporting her and making her happy.
“I am your boyfriend. And I’m the last one you’ll ever have.”
Their journey has their challenges but it’s broken up with spice and top tier banter.
As always, I’m so intrigued by this new addition to the Tilly world and I can’t wait for this series to continue.

5.0 out of 5 stars The start of another fantastic series to obsess over!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseS.J. Tilly has done it again with a fantastic starting book into her new series with characters you can’t help but fall in love with and want more off!
A second chance from fate brings Hannah Utley and Maddox “Mad Dog” Lovelace back together after 15 years and their epic university week that started it all. An unexpected close proximity, office romance with some beautifully written smaller but not less important issues to overcome.
Don’t get me started on the beautiful soul of this man and how far he’s willing to go to show Hannah how much he just wants to be a part of her family and help look after them all! Utter swoon moments are had and all the happy tears.
Fantastic lighter story with laughs and a man utterly obsessed with his girl that will melt your heart.
Waiting impatiently for the next instalment and who Wallers leading Lady will be! Not to mention who the next leading man may be…

5.0 out of 5 stars Obsession, thy name is Maddox Lovelace
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell, hello there! My first dive into S.J. Tilly’s world turned out to be a total banger! This was everything I didn’t know I needed, and I had an absolute blast reading it. It’s a quick, light-hearted, adorable yet sexy read that swept me off my feet!
"Love, Utley" is a contemporary romance that captures the nuanced emotions and complexities of love with a time lag through the lives of Maddox Lovelace, a retired football player, and Hannah Utley, his new employee but an old acquaintance. They shared one unforgettable week at college and one extraordinary night together before life pulled them apart. Years later, Hannah is living her best life with her mom and niece, until an interview at a company reunites her with Maddox. When they meet again, all those pent-up emotions start bursting out, and we finally understand why these two couldn’t forget each other.
There’s confusion, anger, hurt, doubt, and so much more to work through, but I adored this book because it never felt frustrating despite all the angst and heartache. There was enough drama to tug at your heartstrings, but it wasn’t overdone. It struck the perfect balance—emotional when it needed to be, funny at just the right moments, and delightfully swoon-worthy throughout.
The plot is relatively straightforward, but this book shines as a character-driven story that never feels shallow.
Now, let’s talk about Maddox Lovelace. He’s definitely earned a spot on my list of all-time favorite book boyfriends! How he was initially described, and his dedication to his career at college felt like a strong contrast with his tender moments and vulnerability, especially when he started to let Hannah into his life. Thus, for a split second, I was blindsided! But Maddox was and is just a decent, well-raised, lovable guy, and his devotion to Hannah is absolutely swoon-worthy!
And then there’s my girl Hannah. She’s vibrant, strong-willed, and resilient, perfectly matching Maddox’s intensity. She’s had to navigate life’s obstacles on her own, and she’s so full of love that you can’t help but want to be her friend—even if it’s just to give her a shoulder to lean on (though with Maddox around, she’s in good hands! 😮💨).
I also loved Smidge, Ruth, and Waller! They added such charm and warmth to the story.
Another standout aspect was the portrayal of the work environment and how women are perceived compared to men. The book highlights the disproportionate treatment women face and how stereotypes and gender roles still affect how we perceive and treat the same actions differently! This was a great aspect, and it was handled very nicely!
In short, "Love, Utley" is an irresistibly adorable read that’s emotional, funny, and full of heart. If you’re looking for a contemporary romance that hits all the right notes, this one’s a must-read!
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving the ARC didn't affect my opinion of the book.
