Marketing Beef: A Gay Romantic Comedy (Marketing Beef Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 1,460 ratings

Sometimes love is the boldest campaign of all.

Evan McCormick has done everything right—built a solid career, sculpted a disciplined body, and saved for the future like a good accountant should. But behind the spreadsheets and salad lunches, Evan’s craving something he can’t calculate: real connection.

Enter Dillon. All charm, style, and swagger, the new ad exec at Evan’s marketing firm is everything Evan isn’t—and exactly what he wants. When a scandalous office campaign launches a series of risqué billboards across New England, Evan and Dillon find themselves at the center of the chaos... and the chemistry.

Marketing Beef is a hilarious and heartfelt story of opposites attracting, office politics colliding, and what happens when you finally take a chance on the kind of love you can’t budget for.

“Includes moments of pure hilarity, off-the-wall sex, and downright fun.”

Said once, say it again: `Rick Bettencourt steps into an enlarging spotlight of fellow LGBT writers - a circle stage front that includes such names as David Sedaris, Edmund White, Felice Picano, Robert Rodi, Michael Cunningham, David Leavitt, Alan Hollinghurst, Colm Tóibín, et al - and comes on very strong with this new book TIM ON BRADWAY: SEASON ONE. Though there is much talk about this master of the social media and though he has enjoyed success with his earlier works PAINTING WITH WINE and the collection of stories in NOT SURE BOYS, this novel - the culmination of a series f short episodes he published as teasers - places him solidly in the company of the specially gifted young writers of gay fiction.' All true and building - he now is responsible for publishing some very promising fellow writers - and this story is a fun walk in the LGBT park. Rick's gift for comedic writing continues to swell.

Rick opens this rather short book with the main character's written thoughts: 'Dear Journal: Last night, I took a bath with Mr. Bubbles. I haven't done that in years but I was sore from my workout. It felt good. This morning I ate a bowl of granola, a banana, and a glass of pomegranate juice. (I'll have to log this in my spreadsheet when I get home.) Oh, I also walked Mrs. Johnson's dog from 5: 30 a.m. to about 6: 00 a.m. What else? God, am I really that boring? (Please don't answer that.) It's just that... that... Oh, I don't know! Okay, today marks the seventh anniversary of Gary and me splitting up. It's not that it's a bad thing. I'm glad we're no longer together. It's just that... seven years! Who... What have I done during that time? Alright, I'm not going to get myself depressed. I need to focus on my accomplishments. And there have been many. Evan Capri McCormick's Septenary Achievements:
Obtained job at Thoroughbred Marketing and recently vested with five years of service. Promoted to senior accountant with a 15% increase in salary-- after only three years! Removed dairy from my diet and have no more indigestion. (Thank God!) Bought the house in Conant for 50% below (the Great Recession) market value. (And through scrimping, saving, making accelerated payments, and a rebound of the economy, I have over $ 285,000 in equity.) Increased chest measurement by ~ 5% (note: check BMI spreadsheet tonight for exact proportions). Increased pushups from ~ 35 per minute to ~ 55 (also check values in spreadsheet for exact time span... believe it was 10% per year). Decreased number of times I mastur...'

To save the potential reader time, the author's plot synopsis serves well; ` Painfully-shy accountant, Evan McCormick, is conservative with his money and tough on his body, yet the decent nest egg he's amassed, and the toned physique he's formed isn't enough to fulfill him. Evan's starving for affection. As an introvert, bonding with others isn't Evan's best quality. When Dillon--an impeccable-dressed and debonair ad executive--joins the firm, Evan let's his guard down. An office scandal and sexually-overt billboards popping up all over New England bring the two together in this funny yet romantic tale.'

Rick Bettencourt just soars here and his place in the literary scene grows with a devoted fan base. Relax, walk along with him on this warmly entertaining little love outing. Grady Harp, January 15

I'm giving this four instead of three stars because I just whipped right through it in a few hours and had no major complaints about its theme: Evan and Dillon meet cute at the company, start hanging out, start fooling around, start falling in love.

Never mind that the advertising company they work for is about to experience--how you say?--deep doo-doo that is totally unexpected. Except that maybe Evan the accountant smells a bad fish here and there. Never mind that the big client they lost, Yankee Beef, is putting up sexy and provocative billboards all over town featuring a male model that somewhat resembles Evan. Never mind that it's Dillon who keeps pointing this out to him.

Never mind that when on a weekend camping trip they run into the only two guys with whom Evan has ever had any kind of relationship--Gary, his ex lover, and Ron, whom he met on a similar trip after which they had a brief fling. Never mind Gary and Ron are now together.

Never mind the plot. Just go with the romance. And, the beef.

A few mild spoilers ahead (sorry)....

Although this was a short read, I think it was well written. The romance blooming between Evan and Dillon was sweet. But I feel like the author missed the chance of turning this from a sweet romance to a great story by not focusing more on the scandal at work. It was all there. Evan realized something was wrong with the account, he was at work (on the weekend - alone) when everything went down, he had all those journals that would have proven without a doubt where all his money came from, and, oh yea, don't forget Ron. Which, when you think about it, his part (as the story stands now) just leads nowhere, except more questions. Exactly what kind of information did he get from Evan? How did he know Evan's boss? Why would a big company notice a fund growing but not question why? I think somewhere Evan mentioned that the owner just liked to see it grow. Huh? Oh, and why was Dillon even working at the company company while writing successful ads on his own? Why bother with the one year plan before starting his own business when he already had one customer.

Anyways, cute read that could have been a really good novel with more character growth and maybe a little corporate espionage and mystery thrown in. But that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about those.....

Evan and Dillon have such a great romance in this book. That's not to say that they don't suffer their HP's APS and downs along the way throughout the series but they always pull through. They are also joined by charachters from Ricks "Tim on Broadway", which is a favorite book of mine, which makes this story even better IMO. This first book may seem a little bit sweet to some but it changes in the second installment with more conflict between the two and is more emotionally draining (or it was for me). Rick writes with such a unique style. He blends humour, emotion, well developed characters, and plot lines and has the ability to make the reader think that maybe they are part of it all as well. A MUST READ! If you haven't read " Tim on Braodway" first, I recommend

    I absolutely LOVED this novella.
It was a second read for this author and he didn't let me down. This will have you laughing as a twisting story plays out. The characters are gorgeous esp Evan being a true numbers man. Evan had been single for the past 7 years, he's been working at his current employer fro the 5 years in marketing. And he's still single, all work and no play makes Evan a dull boy. Evan's got a secret crush on Dillon who's a new copywriter now working with them. Evan saved Dillon's bacon in a board meeting with the CO discussing a new clients account. Suddenly there world is rocked..read what happens next in this fantastic book. Highly Recommended.
