About the author

Carmen has spent most of her life with ink on her fingers and a dangerously high pile of books and newspapers by her side.
She has worked as a newspaper reporter on two continents and always dreamt of becoming a novelist and screenwriter.
When she found herself crouched under her dining table, typing away on a novel between two earthquakes in Christchurch, New Zealand, she realised she was hooked for life.
The shaken but stirring novel made it to the longlist of the Mslexia competition, and her next book and first mystery, The Case Of The Missing Bride, was a finalist in the Malice Domestic competition in a year without a winner. Since then she has penned several more cozy mysteries, including the Jack and Frances series set in the 1930s.
Carmen now lives in Italy with her human and her four-legged family.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2024These characters cannot seem to catch a break! Jack's mother in England asked her son to come over and help her. They take a passenger liner to sail halfway around the world only to have a man die and one of the entertainers who was sweet on him was blamed for it. The plot is straightforward, but it takes luck and lots of hard work for the three of them (plus several of the liner crew) to find the original killer and save the girl entertainer. I highly recommend this book and the other two.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2020Murder Makes Waves by Carmen Radtke was written in a way that the reader felt like they were sailing to London along with Jack and Frances and her Godfather, Uncle Sal. Rounding out the cast of main characters was a feisty older lady, Aunt Mildred, her nephew Tommy, and her adorable Corgi, Tinkerbell.
The plot was written with the feel of an Agatha Christie novel. The author was quite successful in making the reader feel as if they were in the year 1931 and traveling by ship. There was traditional tea, card games, cigars and alcohol, dance girls, and a magic act provided by Frances and Uncle Sal. Amidst of all these fun activities, a murder happens and gambling cheaters ply their trade.
This was the third book in the Jack and Frances Mysteries, and not having read the first two, didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the book. I loved the fact that the author did a list of characters at the beginning of the book. It was quite helpful since some of the characters only appeared once or twice in the book. The book was a joy to read. I can honestly recommend it to anyone, especially to readers who enjoy that era or style of writing.
Thanks to Carmen Radtke for the opportunity to read and review this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021Frances Palmer is a telephone operator from Adelaide, Australia who's going on a cruise in 1931! Along with her fiance, Jack who owns the Top Note nightclub in Adelaide and her Uncle Sal, a former Vaudeville magician they embark for London. Frances pays her way be being her Uncle's assistant and has her first experience on stage.
When I first read about Aunt Mildred Clifton and her awkward nephew, Tommy, I thought oh no. Not another obnoxious rich woman who spends all her waking hours barking orders like the ones in the movies from the 30s and 40s. She turns out to be a real friend in need, as is Tommy. Frances befriends three dance teachers who are former chorus girls. One ends up framed for murder. Can Frances and friends clear Evie's name? I honestly can't find anything wrong with this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2023Cruising on board a luxury liner heading to England is the setting for Frances, Uncle Sal and Jack next adventure. They get mixed up in some nefarious happenings on board. Their sleuthing group takes in some new members. The descriptions of the ship, the guests and the events are so plausible. The characters are very realistic. As always, the adventure ends on an unexpected note.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023I am so loving these books! Escapism at it's finest. I must make myself slow down and savor them. Even with the ugliness of those times, they leave the reader feeling good. Important in these current ugly times.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2020Carmen Radtke is a new author to me and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book has a solid storyline. This is accomplished by the detail writing by Carmen Radtke. Her characters are fully developed and complicated. The feeling I had reading this book is a fun cozy mystery story. I finished it in one sitting as I felt drawn into the story. I love the fact that it was done on water which makes this story even more interesting. Our main characters Frances and Jack are an act on a voyage ship doing a magic act. They were called into action when a passenger was murdered. Will Frances and Jack find the murderer? What else can possibly happen while investigating this murder? I highly recommend this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025This was a fun book a murder at sea has Jack and Frances helping a Singer who has been arrested for the murder. This was a fast paced book with a lot of action and a really fun story. Frances and Jack and her Uncle Sal are headed to see Jack's Mother in England. A passenger has died and Jack and Frances try to solve the case. I enjoyed this book and I recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2020Murder Makes Waves by Carmen Radtke a fantastic four-star read. All aboard the SS London, in the charming and witty mystery, I didn’t realise this was book three in the series until I had already picked it up, but I didn’t feel like I missed anything. Frances, Jack and Uncle Sal all felt real and full characters, I didn’t miss any back story, so I loved that, it also has some great other characters as well. This was good as you could imagine yourself aboard in the 1930’s soaking up the atmosphere, I did feel it missed something, but I couldn’t put my finger in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cozy mystery for fans of Kerry Greenwood and Agatha Christie!
I loved the previous Jack and Frances mysteries, so I was really looking forward to this one and it did not disappoint! The two main characters are so likeable, but the supporting characters also really add to the story (especially Uncle Sal, who has to be one of my favourite characters ever), and I really hope we see some of the newer ones in Jack and Frances' future stories. The lighthearted combination of romance, glamour and mystery in a bygone era makes this the perfect escapist read. A must for cozy mystery readers who enjoy a touch of history with their murders!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing!
4 Stars
Murder Makes Waves is the third book in the Jack and Frances Mystery series by Carmen Radtke. This is my first read by Ms. Radtke, so I really didn’t know what to expect going into the book. I was definitely intrigued and as I love a good cozy mystery, I happily snapped up a copy to explore.
The story is a cleverly woven historical murder mystery set in 1931, on a cruise ship on the high seas. The story is full of danger, jealousy, deception, murder, theft, crime & investigation- and with a cunning adversary to deal with. I enjoyed meeting Jack and Frances, along with Uncle Sal, Aunt Mildred, the other secondary characters, and of course Tinkerbell the Corgi.
Even though this is the third book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone, without feeling like you are missing any details. The characters did intrigue me enough to want to go back and read the other two books to see what Jack and Frances have been up to previously. I am sure to learn a great deal more about them, as well as backstory information that I am looking forward to discovering.
A fun read.
Thank you, Carmen Radtke!
