Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I spend a lot of time online—forums, Facebook groups, wherever Producers gather—doing my best to help young music-makers. I do this not only to give back to the profession, but to stay tapped into the trends in misinformation that plague modern production. And there's a lot of it.

From basic misunderstandings about gain staging, to overreliance on complex processing chains, to myths repeated by self-appointed YouTube experts—it's no wonder people are confused. These so-called gurus are incentivized to keep you coming back, which means feeding you just enough to keep you guessing, but never enough to give you answers that are relevant to your situation.

I started out as a musician, and I've always approached record-making from that perspective. The music is what matters. The technology just gets in the way. But you can't get it out of the way until you understand it. And that's hard to do when the loudest voices are more interested in clicks than clarity.

That's why I wrote this book.

This isn't just a guide to production. It's a full perspective—technical, musical, emotional, and political—from someone who's spent decades making records at every level. I walk you through the
how, but more importantly, I explain the why—arming you with the ability to make decisions that serve your music.

If you've made records but feel frustrated by the results, this book is for you. I'll help you make connections that took me decades to understand—because these days, you don't have time to learn it all the hard way. You need help. That's what this book is for.

Enjoy, Mixerman

From the Inside Flap

Consider this your blueprint for great productions and mix.

I might be biased, but this would be a great addition to your collection of Mixerman books.

As a home studio musician, I enjoyed how Eric wrote about the group psychology of gathering all of the elements that go into creating a finished song or album. In a way, it’s all about how the pieces fit together. How does the producer work with the band’s leader? What exactly are ‘stems’? There were random chapters that surprised me in a good way. I’ve read many books about mixing and recording, but this one covers new ground. It does it in a way that’s interesting and entertaining. It flows- a fast read. (I had pre-ordered it directly from Mixerman) ..and now very curious about his other books.

Over the last five years, I have literally read just about every book in existence on the subject of music production, mixing, and mastering. Additionally, I have listened to gobs of videos and podcasts, and read thousands (if not tens of thousands) of pages of posts from various forums...and, after spending just about every minute I can studying music stuff, I am quite certain this book is without a doubt the best thing out there on the subject. Mixerman, who is not just a writer interviewing producers and mixers but a legitimate award-winning producer and mixer himself, covers all of the bases in an informative and entertaining fashion, and provides everything you could possibly ever want or need to know. The cover sums it up: this is everything you need to know about producing, recording, mixing, and mastering music at home or in the studio!

It is tough to imagine a more comprehensive book on this subject, and I whole-heartedly recommend this to anyone with even a passing interest. This book will *not* disappoint.

I pre-ordered this from Mixerman as a part of the early book campaign, which is why this review won't show as verified purchase.

Comprehensive yet accessible and entertaining, Mixerman delivers a text that gives much needed, real-world context to an art form that can be somewhat arcane and often misunderstood.
