Miss Vincent's Vow (Women of Weymouth Book 1) Kindle Edition
A destitute lady. An ambitious merchant. Two strangers bound in a marriage—which won’t be so convenient if they can’t learn to get along
Rector’s daughter Cassandra Vincent has lost her father and now she is forced to leave her home. In desperation, she advertises her services as a companion.Weymouth merchant Jethro Hunt is proud of the success he has achieved from his humble origins. To expand his business, he must impress his investor, and for that he needs a genteel wife. He answers Cassandra’s advertisement and offers her an alternative—a marriage of convenience in return for her help to navigate society.
Trusting in Jethro’s godly reputation, but knowing little else about him, Cassandra takes a risk and accepts his proposal rather than relying on charity. They vow to love each other, but they soon realise this promise means different things to each of them.
Driven apart by misunderstandings, they must unite to face malicious gossip and family problems if they want their marriage to blossom into something more meaningful—or they’ll be forced to settle for the deal they first made.
Set in 1811 in the seaside town of Weymouth, Dorset, this novel by the co-author of the popular Regency History blog is rich in historical detail and includes a glossary and historical notes.
Miss Vincent’s Vow is a clean and wholesome, faith-based Regency romance. Part of the Women of Weymouth series, it can be read as a standalone romance with its own happily ever after.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the best Rachel Knowles book yet!
It is also the best marriage of convenience book I have read. While the misunderstandings can be painful, they are not as annoyingly so as is usual for three reasons:
1) The misunderstandings are all believable. Usually, in such books, the misunderstandings are a bit faky and annoying...but here, each time they misunderstood each other, I thought, yeah... I can see that happening.
2) There are many different misunderstandings that build and grow naturally, so you are not stuch with one issue over and over, as often happens in such books.
3) The differences between the hero and heroine are organic enough that they could not all be solved with one brief conversation. They actually had to learn to trust and confide in each other.
All this is set in charming Regency Weymouth with all the intricate delight of the Regency world.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI recently re-read Austen's novels, and picking them up in mid-life I was struck by the subtle sense of fear that underlies them: for a genteel woman whose means are not great, the alternatives to marriage are few, and can be grim indeed. Ms Knowles hones in on this to explore a romance that blossoms within a marriage of convenience between a destitute clergyman's daughter and a businessman who needs to take his place in society. A sweet and realistic romance. I've read the first two books in the Women of Weymouth series and will definitely be buying the next. I'm already trying to guess who in the current cast of characters is next destined for romance!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis clean historical romance focused on the character growth that happened over the course of the story, and I was enthralled to see how each person acted with each other and reacted to the events in the story! There was so much human interest in the telling of this tale that my interest never waned. I became fully invested in the outcome of the story!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was the first book by this author for me and I enjoyed her story of a marriage of convenience that travels through several pitfalls and misunderstandings. Yet due to each of the parties dedicated hold to the vows they took at the marriage it kept them strong and unified (even when they didn’t know it).
I also enjoyed the theme of forgiveness and respect.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

This is a beautiful example of Regency writing. Rachel really knows her stuff. I have read some wonderful Regency novels before and I honestly have to say her's are most definitely among the best. So completely authentic, her books including this latest are so saturated in everything we know and love of Regency.
Rachel always does her research. I love that she includes the helpful glossary and historical notes at the end of each book. I learn new terms or phrases I hadn't heard of previously and I appreciate that. She's known for her knowledge of the Regency period and well versed in the speech, etiquette and styles. Her characters and their story are so realistic with so many layers to her books and characters. It's no wonder that it's hard to put down her books and so easy to get lost in them.
I absolutely loved the story of Cassandra and Jethro. You truly won't regret this one. It is so much more then just a Regency romance. Mystery, rivaIry, past secrets and more. I was pulled into the story within the first few pages. I will admit, that I like other readers wanted to shake them up a bit and raise my voice (most unladylike) screaming "COMMUNICATE for goodness sake". However, with people of that era it just wasn't done. I admire how both main characters continually sought out God for direction as they navigated through the early discovery of marriage.
Cassandra, in my opinion, is a mirror image of "A wife of noble character" referenced in Proverbs 31. I admired how she took charge with the doctor for Jethro's sake when he was ill. I only wish she'd stood up for her husband a little earlier on in regards to her family. Jethro reminds me of the beast in "Beauty and the Beast". Although often gruff he is honorable, trustworthy, a good provider and even begins to develope a protective instinct for his wife that surprises himself more than anyone. The patients he exudes in reference to Cassandra's brother and sister is commendable.
I truly adore a good marriage of convenience but, when convenience turns to love (swoon). When a book makes you feel such strong feeling towards it's characters you know you have a winner. Rachel, thank you for sharing your gift of writing with the world. Please continue doing what you excel at. I was fortunate to receive this book as an advanced copy and am happy to voluntarily leave my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. Happy Reading
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024Format: KindleAfter Cassandra places an add for a position of companion, Jethro offers her a marriage of convenience. She is about to be without a roof over her head, so she gratefully accepts. As is often the case, it was frustrating to see how much difficulty they had because of lack of communication. They would have found joy so much faster if they had just been honest and forthcoming with each other. However, both trusted in God, and it was through the struggles of developing respect and friendship, as they faced various trials, which eventually led to a deep and lasting love. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and was not required to leave a review.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging read.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed this story. I loved the setting by the sea, in Weymouth. Cassandra Vincent is the main character and is left in dire circumstances after the death of her father. I liked her determination to find herself a position and then her acceptance of a marriage of convenience to Jethro Hunt. I did wish at times that they would find the courage to speak honestly to each other. Unfortunately, they also had relatives and acquaintances who caused them problems and there is a surprise in store. This is the first in a series and I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smell the sea, feel the fabric.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe reader can almost smell the sea, feel the fabric, sense the tension and be transported back in time. You are not reading a story - you are in it! The author paints a picture so real, so vivid, with such detail that the reader is gently in the frame. Take your time...feel the breeze...
