Magdalene Nox (The Headmistress) Kindle Edition
Magdalene Nox doesn't cast wishes upon stars...
She simply makes them happen. But for this particular wish, she had waited for thirty years. Her retribution against those who discarded her three decades ago should be swift and simple.
Except a chance encounter and an unforgettable night turn her entire life upside down. Torn between vengeance and lust, Magdalene is forced to re-evaluate everything.
Can the Home of Dragons and lonely math teacher Sam Threadneedle—who finds herself stranded amidst longing and fury—withstand the storm that is Magdalene Nox, or will any and all be consumed by the flames of revenge?
Not everything is as it seems, and as Magdalene returns to the place that left her wounded and lost all those years ago, she realizes that old oak and stone hide more than secrets and pain. They also hold forgiveness and love.

An Ice Queen Tale Unlike Any Other

- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2023So, to say I’m a true fan of Milena McKay is a euphemism at this point. In my humble opinion, Ms. McKay sets the bar, and she sets in high in this genre. She is unrivaled in talent and consistency. All of her books hit the right notes, they are varied, she can find a hidden voice. She is weighed and not wanting as an author, and make no mistake; Ms. McKay is an author. She could probably write in any genre and we are fantastically blessed that she has chosen LWL writing to lay her talents bare. So without further ado, let me warn you, I’m going in and although I usually avoid lengthy reviews (I mean who wants to read a novel review right) I am making an exception as one is decidedly deserved here. I’ve read all her books and certainly the Headmistress is a standout. Magdalene is the iciest of ice queens rivaled only by the others in Ms. McKay’s army of icy and so stone cold female leads, and maybe one other who shall be nameless here because that is not what this is about. Austerity is at its sexiest in the women of Ms. McKay’s novels and Magdalene is no exception. She was deserving of her own story, of her voice, and Ms. McKay does her the highest justice. If I loved her in the Headmistress, I adored her in Magdalene Nox. When the book hits the ground like thunder, you know you’re in for something special. Ms. McKay does not stray away form the controversial topics and handles them with deft, so we see Magdalene faking an orgasm (damnit, we have all been there) but its the way its written in true fashion and utter boredom. It works because nothing should rival her love affair with Sam, and this made her so human to the reader. That scene is bested by the conversation between Magdalene and her mother Candace and while I will not give a spoiler here, let me say it is hands down one of the best pieces of dialogue I’ve read in the genre. It’s cringe in the most delicious way, it’s real, it’s uncomfortable in a way that says there is growth happening, and it is worthy of an award because I will say this; there isn’t a lesbian who I think wouldn’t appreciate the same level of candor from their mother flaws and all. The evolution and exploration of character is divine in its complexity. Ms. McKay has a way of never going above the reader; writing with an innate sense that her readers are not obtuse. There is also the way she gives of herself freely in her writing that is startling in its courage; and the writing is made richer, more full-bodied as a result. I could fawn for pages and pages because she is the best to do it right now and it’s so very meaningful the level of quality that Ms. McKay produces time and time again. I have to say this to conclude and it is a heresy that I will speak. Not many in this genre possess the hand to write with the right amount of spice. It is like cooking without a cookbook or measured ingredients and making the most exquisite meal. She could hold a master class in writing a love scene. She is unrivaled period! It’s hot, it’s detailed, it’s steamy, it’s romantic, it’s nasty in the best way. It’s rich, it’s based on character development and rooted in passion. It drives the plot forward and it is never ill placed or gratuitous. I can almost guarantee that if you are not a lesbian, or bi-sexual…you will be interested after reading any one of her love scenes. Finally, no one does the Ice Queen justice like Ms. McKay. Simply put, at this point, in this genre, and for this reader, she is the ceiling and damn near untouchable.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2023I'm sitting here in awe. I'm positively stupified. I recently found Milena McKay's work and to say I'm obsessed is putting it very mildly. I'm not even sure how to review this book because I'm not 100% confident that my words will do it justice. As with my review of The Headmistress- you can read the details in the synopsis or in other reviews but I can't help but talk about how this book made me feel. McKay evokes so much feeling from her readers, it's indescribable (but I'm going to try).
McKay's writing is enthralling. It's ethereal. Her prose is stunningly beautiful and achingly visceral. The author very softly, lovingly, SEDUCTIVELY, takes you by the wrist, caressing the delicate skin with her sweet, poetic words, and gently lures you into this universe that's labeled contemporary but feels otherworldly. It's almost a fantasy (if McKay wrote a fantasy novel, my chest cavity could explode with joy) the way her words pour over you like warm honey, coating your mind in this sweet, sweet substance and you'd be utterly delighted to endure its perpetually sticky sweetness, reveling in its warmth. McKay's stellar wording and phrasing are unlike anything I've ever read - it's stunning.
I adored literally everything about this book, but one thing that I cannot get out of my mind is McKay's chapter titles. They're gold standard level - again- just captivating. "Of Serendipitous Poetry & Momentous Discoveries" "Of Persipicacious Mothers & Fusha Boas" "Of Ruinous Choas & Things We Hoped For" "OF Howling Crowds & Unbridled Courage" I mean, COME ON! How do those not draw you in?! How could one not be utterly enchanted ?!
Even her spicy scenes are delivered with so much passion and such a descriptive nature that you can't help but feel what her characters are feeling. She does this in a way that is unique to her, it's unlike anything I've ever read - and I've read amazing spicy, steamy, sexy books for a good portion of my life. McKay has set herself apart by delivering her entire book in a beautiful fashion, consistent and incredibly complementary to the story.
Magdagalne is unlike ANY Ice Queen I've ever read. Her back story just flayed me to the bone. Her quest for vengeance and her power were beautifully relayed through these pages and my heart ached for her. Sam - who is so lovely and kind and pure - just melted her. This was beautiful to see through Sam's character in the Headmistress and absolutely devastating to see through Magdalene's eyes in this story. I was completely destroyed and healed in this book.
I did everything I could to pace myself for this book because you can only experience it for the first time, once. And my, oh my. What an experience this was. Beyond measure. Unparalleled.
Read this.
Read every word McKay has written.
That's what I'm going to do.
*I'm on the edge of my seat for the audio version of this book. Abby Craden. Magdalene Nox. The world is NOT ready but bring it regardless. I'm ready for this destruction and resurrection of my SOUL!*

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing
This book is somehow better than the first book in the series, ill be honest, I loved Sam but Magdalene was the one who had my entire attention, what can I say I love women in power. To get to read her perspective of things with so much added details was the greatest thing I could have asked for. Those tiny snippets of dialogue with her mother and her cat, her interactions with Sam and her inner dialogue, man I'm in love. Cannot recommend this book enough!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, heart alleviating, stunning.
Finishing 'The Headmistress' was like placing the last piece of your favorite jingsaw puzzle. Satisfying but also mournful.
And then Milena McKay released 'Magdalene Nox' and you just found out, that your favorite jingsaw had a backside with another image you could finish. And what an image it is.
Powerful, heart alleviating, stunning.
I was torn between devouring and preserving the time with this masterpiece. As always the words were carefully selected to lay out a perfect scenery and display poetic thoughts and deep feelings between those wonderful painted characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Nox is such a petit gateau, all firm on the outside but oh so soft and sweet on the inside
450 pages about events that we already know and it felt like reading a novella, when I saw it, the epilogue was already there.
I'm grateful to have the opportunity to see all the events through Magdalene's POV, she has a very unique way of looking at things (so does Sam) and even her humour is something else. The best part was realising once again that she wasn't as icy as I thought when seeing her through Sam's lens. Loved it, of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love among ‘The Dragons’, (ha, ha).
So here we are. After two years of waiting we have the same story, but this time it’s from Magdalene’s perspective. You’d think you’d have known all of the secrets of Dragons, but of course you’d be wrong. The story is narrated by the ice queen herself and what a magnificent tale it is. Come back to the beginning and relive this beautiful reenactment of a well loved story. You will not be disappointed. p.s. The cat almost steals the narrative.
