- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA deadly virus has brought the world a half step away way from the apocalypse. Neurodivergent book editor Ovid Fairweather struggles to function in the new reality. When a terrifying incident threatens her survival, everything changes. Armed only with the voices in her head, her fabulous vocabulary, her knowledge of the steps of the hero's journey, and her finely nuanced understanding of plot structure, Ovid is forced to focus on the world around her in order to save herself. In doing so, she may just save us all.
I enjoy Robert Chazz Chute's books. They are always refreshingly unique and original. This one was no exception. The critical importance of perception is a central theme in this story. As we are at a point in society when perception is reality, this book is indeed both relevant and timely. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA wonderful addition to the apocalypse genre. Ovid is well rounded character and the action is great when it's around. There are more than a few flashback chapters that read like therapy sessions that I could have done without, but I'll be buying more titles from this author for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYou may not relate as deeply and as surprisingly as I did to the main character but it is so well written I don’t consider it a bet, to believe, you will love it just the same.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis may well be a deliberate stylistic choice by the author. I didn't like it. The main character was believable and makes a lasting impression, the world building is well done. There are just long sections that bog down the plot and annoyed me.
I would perhaps like this story more with a different reading. It's embarrassing but true that the quality of the story has too much to do with the setting of the reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWritten by a gifted author and subtle philosopher, Endemic clutches the reader's hand to pull him into an uneasy existence where nothing is certain but danger and the unknown. Ovid Fairweather's life, off-balanced from the beginning by an unloving and unreasonable mother, teeters from one chapter to the next, and readers will seek comfort when they finish the tale and lay the book down. Excellent in storytelling and skillful in technique, Chute is a fabulous author.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat he writes is relevant here and it is hair raising as we are all in the midst of our own pandemic with the similar accompanied fear that it induces and the incredible bravery it births and every kind of human monster in this world shown to be wreaking their own personal havoc. Robert Chazz Chute is a brilliant writer and he has never failed to be that top notch, fabulous author we've all come to expect and to respect. In this book, Endemic, you will be drawn straight in and compelled by each and every page he sets up and delivers so well. I couldn't stop reading it! I found myself staying up late into the night, round-eyed and brain rippled as I continued the exploration of humankind as presented by RCC in Endemic. I applaud Robert Chazz Chute for writing another superb book, one that I can excitedly recommend to all my friends. Read it. You will not be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you're tired of the formulaic schlock that clutters dystopian literature, then you need to read Endemic. The author has created a unique tale that serves up the best of deep characterization, nuanced plot, and emotional impact. Read this and you'll soon be looking for other books by Robert Chazz Chute.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere are no zombies in 'Endemic'. No vampires either. Instead there are human-shaped monsters who profit from the degradation of others and glory in the exercise of power.
Not that different from the here and now. The only real difference is that waves of plague have stripped away the veneer of civilisation that hid the darkness within. Now the monsters are out in the open and free to indulge their most outrageous whims.
And then there is Ovid Fairweather, a survivor who was broken to begin with and finally finds her niche in a broken world.
I've been a huge fan of Robert Chazz Chute since I first read This Plague of Days, but I have to say that Endemic is even better. It's a brilliant read and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read this year.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this book. Whilst reading it I kept thinking, compassion comes in many forms, and some of them are a bit crazy. Robert chazz Chute has an inate ability to produce realistic and diverse characters. I always enjoy reading his novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars This suspenseful novel pulls you in and doesn't let you go.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat if COVID-19 never lets go of our world? What would happen to society? Robert Chazz Chute does not write escapist literature. He extrapolates the present into plausible but decidedly unwanted futures. The story centres on Ovid Fairweather, a 30-ish editor turned gardener, trying to survive in a New York City that is most definitely not a tourist destination. Betrayed and besieged at every turn, Ovid's resilience and determination in the face of impossible circumstances drew me in. This is dystopian fiction at its finest.
A note: I had the pleasure of proofreading this novel while it was still in manuscript form. However, I received no remuneration for that work other than the distinct pleasure of reading another very well-written novel. Everyone who likes good writing deserves to read this story for themselves.
