Stronger Even Than Pride: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 148 ratings

For Mature Audiences

"...in his behaviour to me there were stronger influences even than pride." When George Wickham speaks these words to an impressionable Elizabeth Bennet, she can have no idea how true they will turn out to be. Stronger Even than Pride, Gail McEwen's latest novel, explores whether love can survive the biggest obstacles that Fate and a most ruinous stubbornness-can conjure up to separate two people destined to be together.

After Elizabeth refuses to read the faithful narrative of Darcy's dealings with Mr Wickham, this Pride and Prejudice variation takes an unexpected turn when she chooses to exonerate the wrong man. Events quickly spiral out of control, and Fitzwilliam Darcy is forced to watch helplessly as the woman he loves slips further and further from his grasp.

Can there be a happily ever after for them? Can a love, stronger than pride, redeem even the worst mistakes?

Unless you are a Jane Austen purist, prepare for a story you won't put down and will re-read over and over. I absolutely hated the idea of Lizzy marrying Wickham instead of Darcy...but that's what makes this a story that captures your heart and soul. Lizzy's prejudice catches up with her as she believes...and quickly marries...the wrong man. Darcy's arrogance keeps her from reading his letter in full, which would have cautioned her about Wickham's true character. Instead, she has to learn about Wickham's ugly nature and selfish behavior from firsthand experience, one painstaking day after another, and only after she is irrevocably tied to him. Ms. McEwen describes in excruciating detail the sad, lowly life that Lizzy and Wickham live...and the pain she suffers as she gradually realizes what she gave up when she rejected Darcy and refused to read his letter. Our hero and heroine each suffer until Wickham - true to his character - makes a critical mistake and ends up on the the 19th century equivalent of "death row." Lizzy and Darcy agonize as each realizes they could save Wickham by stepping forward in his behalf - but will they? Do they abandon their integrity, or does Wickham merely get what he deserves, or is it both? You will share the agony and ecstasy of all 3 characters as you stay riveted to this novel, which is very well written.

I did not like the Bennet family's rejection of Lizzy (except for Jane), but did not find it so unbelievable as to detract from the book. Colonel Fitzwilliam is brilliant - I especially love his comment to the so-called Lady Smythe-Hamilton, "My lady, I hope you do not kiss your mother with that mouth!" You have to read the book to understand why this comment left me howling with laughter!

Before you gag at the thought of Lizzy with Wickham, give this book a chance and learn how - at least in Regency England - love ultimately wins out.

The first thing I can say is that Lizzy was not likeable for a good chunk (if not most) of this book. Part of it stems from (Spoiler alert) her marrying Wickham. I still can't get over it. And this story is for mature audiences so one can imagine the scenes between Lizzy and Wickham. Again, can't get over it. Lizzy and Darcy though: that was hot! Haha

I had read Jan Hahn's "The Secret Betrothal" and thought just an engagement between Lizzy and Wickham was bad. But this story was jaw dropping. I had moments where I had to put my iPad down to assimilate what I just read before continuing.

I commend the author on being brave enough to tackle this storyline and facing possibly angry readers but aside from the obvious, many things just didn't sit well with me. I can certainly handle angst from out favorite couple but this was just too much. And I just finished reading "An Unforgiving Temper" and thought that was a never ending roller coaster. Boy was I wrong! Again the story was compelling but I don't think it'll be for everyone.

One final note and definite SPOILER ALERT here: how can our poor couple not be sure the child was Darcy's?? I don't know if the author was vague on purpose but it had to have been his considering all the steps Lizzy took not to get pregnant while with Wickham. But to not be 100% sure...that's just cruel! Excuse me while I read something lighthearted now to ease my soul a bit!

Not sure if I'll re-read this one. It'll be a while I think before I'm brave enough to go through this again!

This is an amazing book. This daring P & P What If takes a wild divergence from almost every variation. In this version of the P & P universe Lizzy doesn't read all of Mr. Darcy's letter and due to her outrage at his feelings about her family quickly all of Meryton learns of the botched proposal. One man is wicked enough to take advantage of that fact and he sheds his finance and proposes to Elizabeth; who quickly accepts. And thus begins the Marriage of George Wickham and Elizabeth Bennet.

Now I don't think I need to say they don't live happily ever after but the distressing, depressing and disdainful life Lizzy has opted for will come alive for you on these pages (or screens). It is Wickham at his worst, lying, scheming, whoring and drinking. Lizzy's background as the daughter of a gentleman, who has a dysfunctional family, hasn't prepared her to cope with a marriage like this. Her self discovery and growth are well done and profound.

This book is full of angst and drama. There is enough mature content, extramarital and premarital sex that I would steer younger readers away from it. There are times you won't like Darcy. There are times you won't like Lizzy. And the author keeps you guessing until almost the final page.

hey, I love these stories, and I enjoy some variation in how the new writer adapts the old plot and characters, and we have all read some pretty amazing adaptations, but having Lizzie marry Wickham?!?! Oh no... this writer does an admirable job with the writing... she is quite good at telling a story, but this story?! Oh no...I can suspend belief for just about anything... I mean you can make Mr. Darcy a pirate, vampire , or werewolf, and if the story is well written, I am on board... but Lizzie and Wickham married... it is asking too much... not good... I hope she tries again... make Lizzie anything, a spy (oops, that is already being done), an unknown member of royalty (oops, also been done)... well, anything else, just not married to Wickham! Ick!

This book is very well written but made me really go into the dumps. Would Lizzy really be dumb enough to marry Wickham? I don't think so. Would she elope to Scotland? I don't think so. After that, what happens was very predictable but depressing. Wickham did not deserve to be saved, but to not try to save him, made both Darcy and Elizabeth lesser people. So it had a happy ending, I am not sure it was worth the sorrow of the first 90 percent of the book. I will not read more of this authors books. The book was imaginative and well written. But very very dark.

This was well written and I truly wanted to like it a lot, and yet... in exploring the notion of fallibility in ODC it strayed too far for me. I found Elizabeth's and Darcy's moral compasses to be just too far off, and at the end they forgave themselves too much, so that I could not like them nor think they deserved their HEA. Was it just me?

Elizabeth’s obstinacy leads to an unhappy marriage with Wickham after she refuses to entirely read Darcy’s infamous letter, which she ends up throwing into Mr. Collins’ pigsty. Later in the book, there could be no greater irony as she contemplated having thrown away the letter.

“She had literally thrown her pearls before swine and doomed herself to a wretched and miserable existence.” —quote from book

This book is definitely out of the box and it’s difficult to accept a marriage between Wickham and Elizabeth. I forced myself to get over that fact and appreciate the story as presented in this very well written story. While I could not enjoy many of the decisions made by Elizabeth especially, its definitely a page turner in my opinion and, a brave effort by the author to bring forth a unique variation.

    Mature content.

2.0 out of 5 stars One variation too far!

For me this story was although well paced and well written, it was not believable and more importantly the characters that I know and love became, dare I say it, unlikeable. Without give away the plot it starts with Elizabeth making a crucially stupid decision and then spending the whole of the book living the consequences of that dreadful decision. The wonderful Elizabeth becomes someone who is stubbornly stupid, then pitiable, and finally frankly irritating. This is not how I ever want to see the wonderfully almost perfect heroine, Elizabeth, and I have read countless variations. Darcy although starts exactly as I would expect him, becomes more of a sap as the story progresses. And so although the story has many twists and turns, I liked none of them and won't be reading it again, on another note, please do read Mr Darcy's Promise and Haunting Mr Darcy, both of which are very different from the original story but hugely enjoyable.
