King Arthur's Bones Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 98 ratings

1191. During excavation work at Glastonbury Abbey, an ancient leaden cross is discovered buried several feet below ground. Inscribed on the cross are the words: Hic iacet sepultus inclitus rex arturius... Here lies buried the renowned King Arthur. Beneath the cross are skeletal remains. Could these really be the remains of the legendary King Arthur and his queen, Guinevere?

As the monks debate the implications of this extraordinary discovery, the bones disappear - spirited away by the mysterious Guardians, determined to keep the king's remains safe until the ancient legend is fulfilled and Arthur returns to protect his country in the hour of its greatest need.

A missing right hand. A gang of ruthless bodysnatchers. Brother accused of killing brother. As the secret of the bones' hiding place is passed from generation to generation, those entrusted to safeguard Arthur's remains must withstand treachery, theft, blackmail and murder in order to keep the legend intact.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Five of Britain's most notable historical mystery authors team for the fifth time (after 2008's The Lost Prophecies) on a volume whose whole, in this case, is less than the sum of its parts. In 1191, the apparent discovery in Glastonbury of the skeletal remains of King Arthur isn't welcomed by some who fear proof of the legendary sovereign's death will weaken the morale of those who hoped for his messianic return. In the book's strongest section, written by Gregory, Meurig ap Rhys, the man who transported the bones to a small Welsh town for safekeeping five years earlier, must decide to whom he can trust the secret of their current location. Two years after Meurig's death, a series of murders places his sister in the role of detective. Gregory manages to integrate the linking device with a compelling, well-paced whodunit that doesn't come across as gimmicky. (Nov.)

The book King Arthur's Bones, like all the medieval mystery writers' books I've read, takes you through centuries of colorful history while following a common theme. You meet characters real and imagined. I enjoyed the book. Each section was long enough to develop a plot and mystery but not tedious. The writers pull off the "group author" thing seamlessly, and I don't notice a change in style between them.

An entertaining mystery as well as a portrait of early Britain, King Arthur's Bones is an unusual hybrid that would please lovers of mystery and lovers of Arthurian myth. I have already recommended this fine read to friends. Each portion of the tale had rewarding narration even if "Arthur" was primarily backgrounded.

I've enjoyed other books in this series. This particular set is tedious and I'm having trouble finishing it. Some writers get so wrapped up in the names and family relationships that the mystery part gets lost. Don't recommend this particular book.

A rather neat approach to mystery writing by some of the UK's top authors. Each author adds a chapter to the story, moving it forward in time using their own characters. Have not been disappointed by any of the books in this series. Bought all of them.

Obviously to read. If you have not read these before they take a bit of getting used to, I liked that they revisit characters from other authors but maintain the storyline throughout.

These are ok for a casual read, made up of several "mini" stories, by different authors, all with a common "theme" running through them. In this case, unsurprisingly, King Arthurs bones. I find some very well written, but some not so good. Not a bad book, but my no means great.
