Mercy's Battle (He Who Finds Mercy Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

As Prince Valerian and Merry flounder in the aftermath of their terrible losses, they must adjust to the changes that have been wrought upon their lives. Their sole comfort lies in the belief that their nemesis, Liall Guinness has perished and can no longer torment them.

But they are wrong. Liall Guinness is very much alive, and willing to sell his soul in order to achieve his vengeance.

As the threat of invasion looms, Valerian and his peers clash with the elders who are unwilling to embrace new ideas. If Valerian cannot convince them to change their minds, then despite having the great dragons on their side, the land will run with blood.

I loved the first two books in this series and I didn't know how the author could top them. But with Mercy's Battle, she does.

First of all, it was wonderful to be back with Valerian, Merry, Kieran, and Drew. It felt like being back with old friends. It was also so heartening to know Albinonix, the great dragon, was there for Valerian and Levathia, especially with the evil Liall plotting to destroy the good prince.

It made me anxious to know what Liall was going through, the horrible lengths he took to get his revenge. But it gave the story a deeper, darker layer -- lending it more depth as well.

The action in this tale is so riveting that I was reading it with my demanding children talking over me and when I raised my head for a few seconds, I was disoriented because I was so immersed in the kingdom of Levathia. That's how good this is. I can't wait for the next book!!!

Merry and her beloved Valerian show us that faith and obedience conquers all even in the midst of the most difficult situations. It is hard to see them go through such adversity but their love for God and each other endures even in times of loss.

Prince Valerian and Lady Mercy still reel from the lost of their firstborn son. Val and Kieran struggle to get the older knights to accept the usefulness of the sword as a weapon. Meanwhile, Liall Guinness still wants his revenge on Valerian. He systematically works his way up the Vandal ranks with an eye on conquering the kingdom to the north.

    Additional Comments:
    - It’s a very long book, so it took me several months to read it. That has more to do with my reading speed than interest.
    - Some parts could have been shortened, but it’s more realistic to think Liall’s conquest took a very long time. The Vandal parts kind of blurred because they mostly read the same: Liall get challenged, beats somebody, eats something gross, gains a torc, rinse and repeat. Interestingly, I think this came about during a very dark time in the author's life, so that makes sense (the repeated battles against dark stuff).
    - Merry gets to do some healing. Once again, that keeps her from being completely useless. The book doesn’t focus on enough court stuff to let that sort of intrigue carry the plot. There’s a little bit about her jealousy over another woman’s pregnancy.
    - Drew’s jealousy over Gwen’s affection for Kieran got old, but it was nice to see things from his perspective.
    - Medieval Christian fantasy. It’s written kid-safe but is definitely not content-wise kid safe with the increased emphasis on the Vandals and their barbaric customs.
    - The end fight was pretty cool, but it took a lot of setup to get there.
    - This isn’t the end of the series. There’s much more to come, but I think there’s a gap of about 11 years between books 3 and 4.
    - There’s enough sense of closure here, but there’s certainly more to come.

    Conclusion:
Merry and Val try to balance personal life and their official royal roles. Liall plots against them from afar, working his way up the Vandal ranks and gathering an army for a proper invasion.

Another enjoyable story in this series of fantasy adventures with battles, dragons, heroes and villains. It's well-written with plenty of action and great characters.

It's a story about purging evil but sometimes it is not always obvious where it lurks...some mysteries have not yet been resolved.

    Recommended.

The third installment of the He Who Finds Mercy series is a worthy one.

Mercy's Battle gives us an interesting glimpse into a culture other than Levathia's. This is why the book's violence was upped a bit compared to its predecessors. It's obvious that the choice to include a certain measure of gore (an amount that many fantasy readers would probably scoff at, but was, nonetheless, present) was thought out and used carefully for a purpose, which is something I can appreciate. Nothing was done gratuitously.

Mercy's Battle continues the beautiful and tragic narrative of the first two in this series, bringing, not only entertainment, but bright glimmers of wisdom, hope, and love, touching the heart. I've found inspiration here, and I'm sure others will/have, too. The characters are consistent and very human. Their personalities engage the mind and heart, growing more precious to a reader with each step of their journey... like dear friends.

As a home schooling mother of 4, I am choosy about what I use my rare free moments to do. This was worth the free moments.

“Mercy’s Battle” is seeped in blood and gore, a brutal and realistic portrayal of the horrific cost and result of evil. Set against the backdrop the mythical land of Levathia, Mercy’s Battle showcases real people with real weaknesses in their battle against evil - rather than superheroes.
It would be hard to imagine a crueler and more evil villain than Vandal chieftain Liall Guinness who is determined to kill Valerian, crown prince of Levathia, and his wife Merry. Valerian and Merry are still suffering the loss of their infant son Theo—whom Liall murdered. Now Liall’s lust for power and revenge creates more death and tragedy for Levathia.
This is the third of Katy Huth Jones’ novels about Valerian’s quest to oust evil from the land with the help of the mighty dragons, Albinonix and friends. The characters and setting are consistent and real and the action and suspense is non-stop.
Mercy’s Battle is a great escape from the commonplace and an exciting adventure to another land, another time—and the ageless battle of good against evil.
