Merry Misrule: A Historical Regency Christmas Romance Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 433 ratings

She vowed she would never be in his company again.

Until one fateful Christmas, everything changes when two people find themselves sharing a Christmas party and a near kiss under the mistletoe.

Lord Elijah Kentmore has returned home from war just in time for Christmas, only to find that nothing has changed -- except him, who is now a shadow of the man he used to be. Many of his memories of old have fled, only to be replaced by others he wouldn’t wish upon anyone. All he wants now is to be respected for the man he has become, instead of the man he used to be.

He does not recognize Joanna Merryton, his sister’s best friend, but Joanna has memories enough for both of them. She is still scarred by the pranks Elijah pulled on her all of those years ago and would never have accepted her friend Caroline’s invitation to her family’s Christmas house party had she known Elijah would be in attendance.

When Elijah attempts to capture the beautiful, mysterious woman under the mistletoe, he is shocked by her dismissal -- and by the identity of the ugly duckling turned swan. Now all he wants for Christmas is to win her over and convince her that he is not the man she remembers. Can he ever earn the forgiveness of a woman he so wronged?

This Regency romance contains some steamy scenes.

Eli returns from war to find his parents hosting a house party in celebration of Christmas. He suffered a head injury while in battle and is having memory issues. Joanna is best friends with his sister. She is attending the party because she has been assured Eli will not be there. When they were younger he continually played pranks that embarrassed her and hurt her feelings. Eli doesn't remember her but is very attracted to her. He wants to convince her he isn't that person anymore. They make a lovely couple and I was invested in seeing how they overcome the obstacles so they could be together.

There is a subplot that adds more to the story. It held my attention.

Nice loathe-to-love trope holiday novel. Definitely is lighter in tone but has some mention of mental difficulties after returning from war. I liked how Elijah was determined to prove himself to Joanna and how he struggled with some middle child issues also. It is a quick, enjoyable read and the writing flows well. Just a mild bit of heat later in the book. Will have to add this author to my TBR list to explore more from her.

His new Christmas wish was "To win over Joanna Merryton." Eli had not remembered who the stunning young lady was until his sister reminded him. Reminded him of all the terrible pranks he had played on her when he was younger. Before he went off to war and was now having problems with his memory..

Joanna could not believe Eli was home. She had accepted the Christmas invitation from her best friend who she had not seen in a long time due to knowing he would not be there. But he had apologized profusely once he realized, or was told who she was..

A wonderful story with two characters that stole my heart. Eli with his life changed from war and trying to find himself and Joanna, who only wanted love. Perfect Christmas story.

4 1/2 stars. It’s a fun story with unexpected twists and turns. Elijah returned from the war with the consequences of a serious head injury. He falls in love with Joanna, a seamstress, and his sister wants to marry a footman. There’s an interfering brother, too. The ending is quite satisfying. However, much of the plot does not fit the regency time period. But, it’s very enjoyable.

It was the story of a reacquainted young lady with the lord whom she knew before he went to war. As they are reacquainted during a Christmas house party, they overcome some differences and come together. It was very sweet.

A Christmas enemies to lovers book featuring a hero who feels flawed and unworthy, a heroine who is sweet and supportive, and an unexpected “bad guy” with a maliciously mischievous streak. This was an extremely lovely Christmas book and will definitely be re-read!! There are two intimate scenes that fit well in the storyline and aren’t vulgarly descriptive (mature audiences only though!).

Lord Elijah was thoughtless prankster who caused Joanna emotional pain and embarrassment and took the last remaining thing she had of her grandmother, her pocket watch and gave it to another. He's not the same man after returning from war. Although he still likes to play pranks, he's more considerate of his actions. But he has trouble with his memories and thinks he won't be fit to be any women's wife. Joanne is a seamstress and Elijah's brothers and guests all look down on her and think she's only fit to make Christmas costumes and be a nobleman's mistress but not his wife even though her father was the son of a lord. Her friend his sister Lady Caroline is in love with a footman, they want to run off to be married, and they don't think about how they survive financially with no income and no references. I didn't like Elijah's brother Alex, who was a selfish cruel liar, but I hope he redeems himself in a future book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Merry Misrule
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 13, 2020
I was given a copy of Merry Misrule to read and I have purchased this copy, but I review this book with my honest opinion. This book was a lovely read. It told the story of friends who had a lifetime of history, but the heroine really did not want to attend this Christmas holiday celebration but her old Friend had invited her to stay with the family. Joanna thought about it, and was assured that Elijah was still away at War and would definitely not be there. Elijah had been a tormenting boy always up to pranks and outrageous tricks. Joanna thought long and hard about committing herself to this party as she had tolerated Elijah’s treatment over the years. So she arrived at the home of her friend ready to celebrate Christmas but after a while spotted Elijah who had now come home, injured from the war. So they met again and over a few days a sort of friendship grew between them. This book is a story that is perfect to be read over the Christmas period, when the weather is rough outside and you would like to be wrapped up in front of the fire with a book. The characters are lovely and Joanna and Elijah’s friendship grew and grew as the book went on. The pictures in my head when they went sleighing and the imagining of the cold snow, and everyone pulling their sleigh’s up the hill. The wonderful warmth inside me when things worked out well between them. You cannot beat a book with such a wonderful feeling that you don’t want it to end. Miss St Clair, I enjoyed every word and you have given me the Christmas spirit early this year. I could taste Christmas in this book.

This is a wonderful seasonal story for the dark nights of winter. The plot is full of emotional twists and turns. The characters are brilliantly crafted, and have the necessary strength to overcome their social obstacles. This is a great book for all those who love steamy historical romances that have plenty of intrigue.
