Midlife is the Cat's Meow (My So-Called Hexed Midlife Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 659 ratings

A witch without powers. A secret to die for. A midlife sapphic awakening.

A few months ago, I thought I had it all. My life as a forty-something suburban mom in Cleveland might not have been stimulating, but sometimes excitement is overrated. Like when FBI agents knock down your door on the hunt for your crook of a husband. Thrilling? Maybe. But I wouldn’t recommend it.

After twenty-five years, I’m returning home without a penny to my name. But there are far worse things than living in your family’s bed-and-breakfast on a remote island in Maine. Being a witch who’s lost her powers, for example. Or having two daughters on the brink of getting their magic and having no idea they’re witches.

To complicate matters, a mysterious group of magical enforcers called the Shadow Council blamed me for my twin sister’s death years ago and banned me from ever returning home. But I have nowhere else to go.

My plan is to keep a low profile, land a job, and get back on my feet. My plan does not include finding a mysterious old trunk in the attic, having a famous author drop dead while staying at our inn, being haunted by his ghost, or having my powers return in scary and unexpected ways.

I can also assure you I have no intention of developing a crush on someone who will have me questioning everything I ever thought I knew about who I am.

Then again, you know what they say about the best laid plans…

If you’re hungry for a paranormal story that celebrates women over 40 and strong female friendships, with snarky humor, quirky family members, a mischievous cat, a murder mystery, time travel, ghosts, and a leather wearing, motorcycle-riding physician who sparks an unexpected midlife sapphic awakening, look no further than Midlife is the Cat’s Meow!

My So-Called Hexed Midlife is a fresh new series of paranormal women's midlife fiction from the Goldie award-winning writing duo T.B. Markinson and Miranda MacLeod.

This series was inspired by the characters and mysteries in the Witches of Pinecroft Cove cozy mystery series, which the authors published under the pen name Nicole St Claire in 2019-2021. The books have been entirely reworked to transform them into sapphic paranormal women's fiction mysteries, but if you have read the other series, certain circumstances may feel familiar. You are not losing your marbles.

Readers should be aware this book contains mild profanity and a same-sex romance.

Great bolk
This book was fantastic. It was so funny and interesting. I thought it was great that she was coming into her own since she came back home and I think she finally found someone she can be really happy with.

What a wonderful book. So full of fun, mystery, magic, time travel and a slow-burn romance. All coming together in the magical world of Goode Harbor Island.
Did I mention witches? Oh yes, we have witches, ghosts and a cat called Buster who is not of this world. Such a rich treasure trove of characters you will not soon forget.
Others have already given a synopsis of the story and characters, so suffice it to say when these two authors put their talents together you just know you are in for an unforgettable journey.
Hopefully, there will be more stories about Goode Harbor Island and it's wonderful inhabitants. Thank you, ladies, for the magic.

This was a very entertaining and real book about a woman hitting a rough patch in her "perfect" life and coming out the other side much more true to herself, including her magical powers. I hadn't read anything like this from either MacLeod or Markinson before and it was a delightful surprise and I very much am looking forward to the next installment.

Tallie, mother of 2, very much not embracing her inner witch finds herself heading home for the first time on 25 years after her husband gets caught embezzling and skips the country. As she heads home, she is more than a little broken, insecure, and holds many secrets that she is very worried about getting out. Her path to herself is uneven - full of old and new friends, lots of self-doubt and recrimination, paranormal activity, hilarious situations, and a sapphic awakening. I found myself laughing out loud and full of empathy for Tallie. The supporting characters were great and the world created felt like it could actually exist. The end of the book left no doubt that there will be another and I'm here for it!

I LOVE this book! About 5% into Miranda MacLeod and T. B. Markinson’s latest collaboration, I had already laughed out loud at least a dozen times.

You have to applaud a story in which a broke and disgraced divorcee — whose embezzler ex has skated off to an extradition-free country — returns to her hometown with her two daughters, and the first thing Tallulah Shipton sees are her octogenarian mom and aunt dancing around a bonfire.

“Why are Grammy and Aunt Izzy naked in the front yard?” asks Tallie’s 12-year-old, Tabitha.

But that scene’s to be expected when Grammy, Aunt Izzy, and a good many other residents of Goode Harbor Island, Maine, are witches.

    Right?

The authors populate the small town with a rich cast of characters who exhibit some of the best and worse of human behaviors.

We meet Tallie’s protective, teasing, and tough-loving mother and aunt, proprietors of the Shipton Inn; her daughters, preteen Tabitha and sassy Sabrina; sweet, sapphic childhood friend Dana Wardwell and Dana’s coven members, Brigit Lavreau and Mira Scott; insanely jealous Sheriff Bonnie Gray; former teacher’s aide Mrs. Alice Crenshaw; and the non-magical Dr. Nora Kenworthy, whom straight Tallie surprisingly finds sexy.

Also central to the story are self-important Goode Harbor writer David Spencer, and Shipton Inn’s exclusive current guests, famous ultra arrogant author Alexander Tate, and his fiancée, Celia Lopez.

Oh, and we can’t forget Tallie’s feline sidekick, Casper-like Buster the cat.

Treat yourself soon to the enchanting world of Goode Harbor Island.

With lots of humorous moments to alleviate the heavy themes introduced in this book.
First off, it is important to note that this is the first in a series; as such, it deals mainly in introducing new characters and establishing the settings and relationships that build the wonderful world of this magical island.
Second, this is not a classic coming-out story, more like a toaster-oven/self-discovery story.
There are also quite complex issues to unpack, and not all of them are resolved in this book. Probably waiting for the next books in the series to be resolved. Suffice it to say that the MCs are complex and wonderfully lovable. Their occasional awkwardness adds to the realistic charm of the book.
Personally, I was smitten with the little red-haired kids right off the bat.

I can’t wait to read the next book!

Great characters and good plot with nice twists. The setting was perfect BUT I could have done without the daughters being named Tabitha and Sabrina, really??

Miranda and T.B. have given us a chance to enhance our sights on other worldly sights. A soon to be divorced woman with two pre teens girls and a ex who moved to South America to escape the FBI. Travelling back home to her mother's inn in Maine sets off a series of new beginnings for the mother and two, "I don't want to" attitude young ladies. Her mother and aunt and half the town are witches, of the good kind. What starts is a cat that sits on her chest each morning that died a hundred years ago! Oops! So begins a new mystery and is she really starting to really like the female doctor in town? Enjoy!

The great thing about this book is that you are very happy with the ending. Some other books that are the first of a series, leave you annoyed, because they finish on a cliffhanger. This one ends satisfyingly. The ending makes sure you’ll buy the next one though. Always happy with books from Miranda and T.B. Looking forward to book 2, the next in this magical series.

A really entertaining read from two brilliant authors. While there are witches galore and magic afoot in this book, at its heart it is a mystery, with plenty of humour thrown in.

There are plenty of very likeable characters, but my favourite by far was Sabrina, the youngest daughter of Tallie, the main character. Not yet a teenager, she is already an absolute riot, utterly hilarious, and thoroughly deserving of her own book.

I can’t wait for the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a mistake picking this up before there's more to sate my appetite of good stuff. Top notch!

I knew reading this rn would be a big mistake

I finished it in less than a day and what now? What should I do? LIVE? Who should I bribe so I can put my hands in the sequel ASAP?

Jokes apart, this was a very enchanting reading, part of the plot wasn't that difficult to tell (by characters, I was utterly clueless most of the time) and was easily solved by the MC and her lot, but rest assured it was made in a very entertaining and captivating way.

The rest of the plot is why I started this review with that joke, things just started to be unfolded and I betcha we barely scratched the surface of it. I love me some witchy mystery.

The MC is your typical underdog who, recently, suffered a lot by destiny's hand and hopefully will get a respite now with the help of her family, friends - which by the way I loved, what a great supporting cast - and LI, which sadly we don't get to know much about, yet, but she looks like she'll be that wholesome, handsome, LI that you cannot not root for her to get the girl. I'm excited to see their thing developing more and all the shenanigans that this whole lot will bring to this island.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny read with a lack of romance
Reviewed in Germany on September 2, 2023
It’s always a pleasure reading books that come from a cooperation of the two authors, and this book is no exception. It’s a fun read. However, I felt like the two of them lost a bit of their focus in this book. Is it a witching story? A crime story? What I missed completely was the romance aspect, which admittedly makes lesbian literature special. Okay, there’s a bit of romance between Tally and Nora, but it looks like we‘ll get more of that in the sequel. That’s a pity. So, as can be expected in a series of books, it ends with a cliffhanger. All we can do is wait.
Due to my perceived lack of romance I couldn’t award the book with five stars.

Witches aren’t my usual reading fare but, as I’ve always enjoyed Miranda and TB’s books, I thought I’d venture out of my comfort zone. Glad I did as I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It was a fun read and had the usual ‘laugh out loud’ bits as expected. Liked the characters, too. Always a plus. Looking forward to the next… So, which non-witch reader now feels more positive about witch books?
