Review

4.5 stars, RT Magazine TOP PICK December 2017
"This marvelous story is part caper, part mystery and part political skullduggery as an attempt to do a good deed backfires spectacularly. Although this is a stand-alone book, Hunter's legion of fans will be thrilled to find a number of familiar characters included in the tale. ...Primarily a caper novel, it is also jam-packed with character revelations and sometimes painful growth."
--Jill M. Smith,
RT Magazine

"Familiar and pulse-driving motifs readers have come to expect from Hunter, supplemented by a mystery-driven plot."
--Kendrai Meeks
, author of the Red Hood Chronicles

Midnight Labyrinth is non-stop adventure filled with humor, romantic tension and the rich texture we have come to expect from Hunter.
--The Lit Buzz

One of the things I appreciate most about Elizabeth's writing is the humor. I love someone that can make me feel, make me cringe, make me gasp, and make me laugh all in one book.
--Amy Cissell,
author of the Eleanor Morgan series

This book MORE than lived up to the expectations I had, in fact it blew them out of the water. Some moments I was cry laughing, others I was on the edge of my seat reading voraciously to get to the next page..... I'm already ready for the next book.
--This Literary Life

In real life, I doubt it's the legitimate version of grifting that Hollywood makes it appear to be, but urban fantasy isn't exactly real life, is it? And the service that Tenzin and Ben provide for the immortal community is decidedly Leverage-esque.
But what happens when the con artists get conned?
Shenanigans, that's what. And who doesn't love shenanigans?

From the Author

For every reader who ever asked,
"So are you going to write a Ben and Tenzin book?"
Reader, I decided to give you five.
I hope you enjoy the first, and I thank you for your patience. I've been waiting to write this book nearly as long as you've been waiting to read it.
With much love, Elizabeth Hunter

Aaaah! THIS world!!! After receiving an advanced copy to read, I took a day off work to read Midnight Labyrinth in an all day and night marathon. I can state with no hesitation that I now understand why it took five years! Ben and Tenzin's story is going to be a slow, languid, sexy one. As usual, Ms. Hunter has gifted us with smart dialogue, character development and a very interesting plot. Midnight Labyrinth is filled with mystery, intrigue, danger, and teasers.
This book addresses two difficult subjects, and I applaud Ms. Hunter for incorporating them. The first is the horrific acts of stolen art during the Holocaust. The second addresses domestic violence. The subjects were written with a strong, realistic tone. Kudos, Ms. Hunter.
Ben and Tenzin are still in New York, and are between jobs. Ben has hired Zoots to teach him Parkour, (shades of April White, anyone?) and is having troubling thoughts regarding Chloe and her boyfriend. He runs into a pretty girl and two paintings, and decides to be altruistic. A caper and a heist ensues. Being duped and exacting revenge requires the assistance of Chloe, Tenzin and as much as Ben hates it, Gavin. Get a tall glass of ice water ready ladies! That kilt wearing Scotsman is HOT. I can't wait to see how he and Chloe's relationship develops. Chloe deserves someone to adore and to protect her. Would Gavin dare put her under his aegis?
Chloe becomes Tenzin's day person, and their relationship will have you laughing loudly. Chloe even modernizes Tenzin, with new fashion and a new hairstyle. More Arthur please! There are a few very telling scenes in this book regarding "Benzin." When Tenzin walks out in her new look: "Ben turned and Tenzin was at the top of the stairs. His mouth dropped open..........Ben couldn't move. He wanted to touch. Everywhere.........and he had the distinct urge to bite." Hmmmm...........
Though Ben poopoos it, I think that Tenzin thinks it's a given that Ben will turn, and I wouldn't put it past her to force him. If you're looking for the answer to her and Ben's relationship status in this book, you will be disappointed. Remember: slow, languid and sexy. I honestly have no idea where it will go. I do think it could become quite complicated.
I think that in Midnight Labyrinth, we finally see Ben as the formidable man he has become. Just imagine what kind of vampire he would be? Shiver inducing, huh? I salivated over his punishment of Chloe's ex. Pure. Perfection. Again. Shiver inducing.
"Their partnership was good. He was finding his way and meeting his people. Making connections and learning the ways of their world. He had time as long as she was with him. As long as she watched. His human experience would only add to the being he would become."
As in all things Ben and Tenzin. Becoming an immortal or pursuing a different kind of relationship, I think they will ultimately be Tenzin's choices, unless something forces her hand. She has lived a long time, and can see the big picture. Bring it on!
The title of Midnight Labyrinth could be used to describe New York City, the museum, Ben and Tenzin's relationship, the tightrope of his human life in the world of vampires or the path that Ben is certain to have to take. (the dream is interesting) A perfect title for a perfect book!
You will love this read. There are never false notes. Her stories always stay pure and clear. They always leave you wanting more and wishing she could write faster! As always, Ms. Hunter NEVER disappoints.

I'm going to start by saying I really enjoyed the book. I love the characters and so I was excited to see another one was out. That being said, I think I only enjoyed the book because I have already read all of the others and the characters of Ben and Tenzin where already endeared to me. If I had bought this without knowing the back story I would have been slightly bored because there was a distinct lack of action in this book that I usually enjoy in the elemental world. Even still, I found myself skimming some pages when the story was moving slowly. I think this would have been a better novella than a full book. The lack of action and that extra something special that we usually see in her books would have been less noticeable. Also, Ben came across as less than greatful in this book for Gio taking him in and setting him up with a pretty great life. Yes, there is violence, blah blah blah... suck it up. You are an adult and your life could have been worse. (I also found that irritating.) So, if you are already a fan I highly recommend this book. If not, start with the other books first and then make your way here. It's a nice accompaniment to the other books but I doubt you will be enthralled if this is your first foray into the elemental world.

I needed to wait a while before I could write my review because I felt like it was going to be too biased. I love Elizabeth Hunter, and I knew that would shine through my words. But it turns out that it doesn’t matter if it was 10 minutes or 10 weeks later; I am still going to gush.

Midnight Labyrinth is the first full-length novel pairing Ben Vecchio and Tenzin, two of the most beloved characters in EH’s Elemental world. The dynamic duo, shipped as “Benzin” by her fan-base, have shared adventures in three novellas to-date. This novel revisits some old friends, but also introduces some new characters sure to be favorites.

Seriously, wait ’til you meet Arthur. EH divulged Christian Siriano was the inspiration for this awesome addition to the Elemental world, one I expect to see again. And seeing as Tenzin is the ultimate Asian, I had to share this meme:

    He has NO idea.

In this adventure, Ben and Tenzin seek a valuable piece of art connected to a Jewish artist killed during World War II. While the story’s actual premise is entirely different, it shared a tone with the movie, Woman in Gold. As our favorite pair takes on the search, we also get to delve further into their connection and its growth as they grow as individual characters. While Ben’s development is to be expected, we also see Tenzin connect further with humanity and with her role therein. She forms her own bonds in a way we wouldn’t expect when we first met her in the original Elemental Mysteries books. It’s both unexpected and delightful. I always liked her in an almost terrifying comedic way; I am loving her as she becomes a more humanized version of her ancient vampiric self.

We also find ourselves in the midst of vampire politics in New York, something we haven’t seen much of in the past. Ben learns some valuable lessons, perhaps taking his ego down a few pegs. He is still “growing up” and part of growing is making mistakes. Let’s hope our boy learns from them!

Midnight Labyrinth is non-stop adventure filled with humor, romantic tension and the rich texture we have come to expect from Hunter. If you haven’t started with any of her other books, you can definitely start here. But if I am being honest, I will always say to start at A Hidden Fire and luxuriate in the whole series.

If someone were to ask me why they should read this book, it’s simple: immersion. From the moment I read page 1, I was committed. Few authors have the ability to captivate the reader to the point of full oblivion of their world; EH can. Be prepared to commit to this book, because you’ll be unable to focus on anything else until you’re done.

    Also, BENZIN.

Thank the book gods, it seems to be going where – let’s face it – most of us want it to go. I won’t tell you what exactly happens, but I will say that I desperately wanted a thing to be a thing and things to happen with the things and the people.

Did that make sense? Read the book and come back and it will. 😉

I read the novellas and they did a decent job of setting the chemistry between the two. Finally doing a novel did justice to characters developing story line. I thoroughly enjoyed the side parts as well. Looking forward to the next installment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hat Elizabeth Hunter das wirklich selbst geschrieben?
Reviewed in Germany on August 14, 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding - favourite book of the year!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 7, 2017
I was so ridiculously excited to read this book, to return to Elizabeth Hunter's Elemental World with favourites Ben and Tenzin is pretty much the best thing I could be reading - ever! So I was overjoyed to win an eARC of Midnight Labyrinth, now I've bought that beautiful paperback to add to my collection.

This book was every bit as good as I was expecting and then some. Ben is the same as ever, just slightly more mature and a little bit darker. This is a hard novel for Ben as he has some lessons to learn, but that does not lessen the sheer joy and fun of being with him on this journey. Tenzin is Tenzin of course, she is a 5000 year old vampire so of course she's little odd with some weird ideas of a social niceties, making for some hilarious moments.

Enter stage some new characters, namely Chloe, Ben's first love from school, and she fits into Ben and Tenzin's life as if.... well as if Tenzin designed it that way :-) There were some amazing moments, including Tenzin getting a new dress from an awesome dressmaker, could we see more of him pretty please? And Gavin! Yes Gavin looks to play a key role in the life of the treasure hunting trio and I couldn't be more excited. He also has a journey to go on and I am delighted that we get to see it here. Also, could I just say Zoots! Please please can we know more dear Author? I am so so desperate to know more!

The mystery of the painting I had my suspicions about but to be honest here this was just the facilitating plot point to get to spend time with these amazing humans and vampires, and I have a feeling that there is, as always many many undercurrents and politics at play in this world.

To be honest you could pick this book up as a first in a series and enjoy it immensely, as all characters, the world and relationships are explained beautifully. But please please do yourself a favour and go read everything else in this world, for this is made so much better by these characters being like family and finding yourself at the best reunion ever. This deserves many more stars than there are available to give. Read of the year for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book!
Reviewed in Australia on November 13, 2017
Midnight Labyrinth is the first book in a five part series which promises to be amazing, full of adventure and mayhem, witticisms and great characters, both old favourites and new. The story opens on an adrenaline high and continues on to become a fantastic story.
I have been waiting for this story for a long time. Readers first met these characters in the ‘Elemental Mysteries’ series, and watched Ben grow up and Tenzin become more ‘humanised’ as their friendship has grown. We have been teased by the author with novellas of Ben’s and Tenzin’s stories. Now, these characters can tell their own tales in a full length novel. I have not been disappointed in my expectations and can’t wait for the next instalment in the series.
Elizabeth Hunter’s books are an auto-buy as she is my favourite author. Do yourself a favour and try her books, you will be glad you did.
