Miss Agnès: A Tender Coming-of-Age Novella Set In 1908 (A Resistance Girl Novel) Kindle Edition

3.5 3.5 out of 5 stars 66 ratings

France 1908

At Château de Dragancourt in Picardy, Agnès Gunarsson, a Swedish orphan, finds herself entangled with the captivating 'terrible twins,' Elle and Jacques. Their affection for Agnès ignites a rivalry that tests her resolve.

Shaped by her tragic past, Agnès grapples with the intense desires of Elle and Jacques. She must make a life-altering choice between staying at Château de Dragancourt or breaking free from the mounting pressures.

'Miss Agnès', the coming-of-age tale and initial inspiration for 'The Resistance Girl Series', delves into the interplay of love and misunderstanding in the Georgian era where innocence confronts desire.

MISS AGNES by HANNAH BYRON is a well written novella that takes place in Picardy in 1908 with interesting characters that we are going to hear more about in the second book in the duet, Doctor Agnes, which takes place in 1917.
When Agnes Gunarsson de Melancourt, adopted daughter of Baron Maximillian Dupuis de Melancourt, spends a weekend at the Chateau de Dragoncourt with terrible twins Elle and Jacques, her eyes are opened to an entirely different world, and she cannot get away from there fast enough.
This encounter with a darker side of family life makes her thankful for her loving father, her friend Katell, her old dog Gava and her books.
It is an interesting look at the social scene that existed in France in 1908. It is an enjoyable read.
I received an ARC copy of the book. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

The author paints a scene beautifully with words. The book is a pleasure to read and it's easy for the reader to envision the locations and characters to an incredible degree.

This prequel book takes place in 1908 and introduces Agnes and some of the other characters and locations that are so vividly presented in "In Picardy's Fields," a book that takes place during WWI.

In this book, Agnes is young and sheltered. She meets Elle and Jacques, the twins who live in Chateau de Dragancourt. They are anxious to befriend her, but because their upbringing is so different from hers, they upset her and her sensibilities. They are unruly and do not conform to the social rules that Agnes is comfortable following.

This is a quick reading book that introduces the characters and their backgrounds. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and to seeing how these young people start to grow into the young adults that I loved in the earlier book (that takes place at a later time).

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fictionalized historical events.

The author provided me with an advance reader copy. This is my honest review.

I was privileged to read advance copy of this book and what a great read it was. I have previously read the 2 already released books in the "Resistance Girl" series and truly enjoyed reading its' prequel. Book is easy to read and truly a pleasure, descriptions of places are very picturesque and it's easy to immerse into the story. I recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction genre.

As a prequel to Picardy’s Fields we get a glimpse at the life of Agnes and Elle before the war. Both growing up in a privileged family with very different standards and etiquette. Agnes, the more refined and intellectual young lady. Elle, the more debutante flighty young woman. If you have read PF the characters will come to life here as we can see how the two women are so different. Although it’s a look at their early relationship I would still recommend reading Picardy’s Fields first. I received an early copy and have written this review voluntarily.

Miss Agnès: A Tender Coming-of-Age Novella Set In 1908
This story starts with a quote and dedication page and table of contents.
Author's note is included. Story is about Agnes and she's growing up with her dad who's not her real father.
They are in their summer routine where she reads a lot and likes to tend to her dog Gaba. He is a dedicated musician and he has been invited to play at a mansion and will bring Agnes with him.
Agnes has a friend Kat but she's away spending time with her grandmother so she has no one to talk to about feeling and thoughts.
He had met the host, Horace and she recalls their twin children years ago but she only remembers their names. The boy and girl twins take her under their arms at the musical event and it's decided they will come to visit at their castle on the weekend.
She gets a glimpse as to their free style of thinking and living. It's quite the opposite of her life and she's not sure how to take it.
She is able to show them around and the play croquet and do other fun things. She is leery about them for personal reasons and is invited to stay a weekend at their mansion again. Elle hopes to get her in the racing car and Jacques hopes to converse more with her about the authors' they have in common.
Agnes is very naive and not comfortable with some things that occur and very late at night when Elle comes to her bed she misunderstands ....
Found the descriptions in this book very Victorian and so many words I had to look up as I never read this time period before. Very interesting and could follow what was going on.
Especially love the descriptions of the clothing, so detailed.
Sneak peek at the next book in the series, a chapter when Agnes has become a doctor with her friend Kat.
About the author is included and listing of her works in series groups along with contact links..
