Missing the Deadline: Isabel Long Mystery Series Book 7 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

A case for the books …

As Isabel Long has discovered, a case can come from unexpected people and situations. This time, it’s at a poetry reading, where she is approached by Cyrus Nilsson. Once a suspect in a previous case, the noted poet wants her to investigate the shooting of his first literary agent.

Gerald Danielson was found shot in the head at his home in Meadows Falls. He survived but isn’t the same successful agent who moved there from New York City. The police ruled it an attempted suicide, but Cyrus has his doubts. Certainly there are people, including a vindictive ex-wife, a jilted local writer, and even an apparently devoted sister, who might have motive.

It doesn’t take much to convince Isabel to take on this case. Afterall, her mother, Maria, who is her ‘Watson,’ says it’s boring without one.

As a journalist, Isabel Long never missed a deadline. She does the same as a P.I. although in this case, the term means something entirely different.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An entertaining and engaging story, with solid characters, a vivid setting, and a fascinating mystery at its heart. Highly recommended."

—Sue Barnard, Author of the
Heathcliff: The Missing Years

"With
Meeting the Deadline, author Joan Livingston has penned her best Isabel Long mystery yet. This time, Isabelisn't mining clues to solve a cold case. She's trying to get to the bottom of a possible suicide attempt ... or was it attempted murder of a well-known literary agent? There are a few suspects with the crime trifecta of motive, means, and opportunity. But who did it — the victim or someone angry or jealous enough to try?"

—Frederick Fullerton, Author of
The Writer of Unwritten Books

"A brilliant read. I thought I knew where it was going but the twist caught me off guard. Another great read."

—Paula RC Readman, Author of
The Funeral Birds, Stone Angels and The Phoenix Hour

"Another cracker! Every book in the Isabel Long series is a joy to read. Each story is crafted around the centralcharacter, Isabel, with a superb supporting character list. My favorite has to be the indomitable and sharp-witted Ma, Isabel's 93-year-old mother and co-sleuth, but the Old Farts come a close second! This tale moves, appropriately, intothe publishing world and Isabel is commissioned to solve the mystery of the shooting of literary agent Gerald Danielson. The reader follows her through a number of local hilltowns, meeting potential suspects and some willing, and not-so willing witnesses. A great read and a definite page-turner."

—Angela Fish, Author of
The Fractured Globe

From the Author

I extend my appreciation to the people who have encouraged me to write, as well as those who have helped me navigate the publishing world, including Steph and Laurence Patterson, Teresa Dovalpage, and Frederick Fullerton. As I did when I was a reporter, I count on others for technical information. In this case, I credit the late Bob Manners, a long-time paramedic who has had experience with trauma.

My thanks, also, to the folks living in the hilltowns of Western Massachusetts who made our family feel welcome for so many years. I so enjoyed sharing their stories as a journalist. Certainly, those experiences have inspired this series and other books I've written. The towns, characters, and the story come strictly from my imagination, but I'd like to think I could plunk the fictional hilltowns I've created among the real ones, and they would fit just fine.

Joan Livingston is the author of novels for adult and young readers, including the Isabel Long Mystery Series, featuring a longtime journalist who becomes an amateur P.I. solving cold cases in rural New England.

Joan draws upon her own experience as a longtime journalist in Massachusetts and New Mexico to create Isabel Long, a sassy, savvy widow who uses the skills she acquired in the business to solve what appears to be impossible cases. She also relies on her deep knowledge of rural Western Massachusetts, where she lives, to create realistic characters and settings.

She also relied on those insights while writing The Sacred Dog, Northern Comfort, and The Sweet Spot, all set in the fictional hilltowns of Western Mass.

I enjoyed Isabel Long, her mom,and a cast of quirky locals. I find them all just as entertaining and interesting as the mysteries that Isabel solves.

Private Investigator Isabel Long tackles a case in the publishing world. The new case brings with it more memorable characters and, like the others in the series, is set in Hill Towns in Massachusetts. Author Joan Livingston makes the people and setting come to life. This entry in the series is fast paced.

Who says life in a small town is boring? If that's someone's opinion, they never encountered the fictional world created by Joan Livingston. A terrific author and wordsmith, Livingston has all of my favorite elements interspersed throughout Missing the Deadline, the Seventh Isabel Long Mystery. From The Plowboys and The Old Farts, the Rooster, and of course, Isabel Long, the journalist turned Private Investigator, and her aged, but spry mother, Livingston created a fictional world of small hill-town life in rural Western Massachusetts. Her folksy, tongue-in-cheek delivery is a joy to read. I smiled through the pages, wondered and puzzled about the mystery wrapped within, and found myself unable to put the book down, and then saddened that it came to an end. Livingston paints life in rural, small town America that one sees as one reads.

Yes, Missing the Deadline, the Seventh Isabel Long Mystery is a mystery by nature, but the town and its people are every bit a part of rural America, few get to see unless one lives or visits there. It is this colorful, but drab and sometimes dreary wholesomeness I yearn for, and most importantly, can hear and see in the people and town within and amongst the pages. A terrific read from a terrific author! An easy 5 Star and a book I recommend most highly and without reservation.

Just finished this the other night at midnight. You won’t see a verified purchase on my review since I get my autographed books at a local brewery owned by the author’s son. This series is based on the hill towns around me and each reference makes me stop long enough to identify the landmark. Isabel makes great progress as a sleuth and that mother of hers is such a hoot! I have it from a great source that book 8 is advancing as we speak!
