Melodies of Malice (Fiona Quinn Mysteries Book 13) Kindle Edition
When Fiona’s teenage cousin, Madison, finds the new Maestra for the Pittsburgh Junior Symphonic Orchestra dead, a web of espionage unravels!
Fiona’s husband, Detective Landry, seeks out his mother’s international security firm, Global Shield, to assist with the investigation. They soon discover the Maestra was a Russian spy. Furthermore, an operative from Russia has been dispatched to the US to kill former female spies in order to protect delicate secrets.
While the possibility that Madison’s life is in danger, Detective Landry places her under protective custody—in his and Fiona’s home. Global Shield operative, Ivan Guseva, stays with Fiona and takes up residence in the attic apartment where her ghostly grandma, Evelyn, lives. Much to Fiona’s dismay, he’s enjoying every moment, and it appears Grandma Ev is too! Meanwhile, Madison is proving to be quite the master of teenage shenanigans.
Fiona’s about to move this investigation up an octave by pulling out her amateur sleuthing skills to track down a Russian operative, send her house guests packing, and bring her home back to normal—whatever that is.

About the author

C.S. McDonald taught dance and choreographed shows for twenty-six years. Nowadays, she resides with her husband, Bill, and her poorly behaved Cocker Spaniel, Allister, on their Thoroughbred farm, Fly-by-Night Stables, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. George the Pony is a real pony who lives among the tall Thoroughbreds on their farm.
In 2016, Ms. McDonald decided to write a cozy mystery series. The Fiona Quinn Mysteries are quick clean reads for anyone 10 to 110! You'll love Fiona and the quirky, but oh so charming, Detective Landry. Fiona is a kindergarten teacher and an unlikely sleuth from Pittsburgh. If you've never been to Pittsburgh, welcome to this wonderful city! If you live in Pittsburgh, you're sure to recognize many of the venues featured in the books. Ms. McDonald has even sprinkled a little Pittsburghese into her stories just for fun. Yinz will love it!
Hey! Don't miss C.S. McDonald's new addition to Fiona Quinn Mysteries--Fiona Quinn QUICK Mysteries! What's that? Short Stories (about 30/40 pages) for a quick bedtime read or if you're stuck with a long wait in a doctor's office (we've all been there). Four shorts in all. Check them out!
Okay, now for something seriously exciting--C.S. McDonald has penned a second cozy mystery series, The Owl's Nest Mysteries--Meet Alexa Owl. She's returned home to Pittsburgh to start a new business, the Owl's Nest Couturier Shop. Much to her surprise, she's getting more than she ever bargained for: Detective Bobby Starr, and he's no ordinary sleuth. Bobby is an angel who's returned to Earth in hopes of earning his way into the Guardian Angel Squad. Only here's the catch: he's got to solve three murders he failed to solve when he was alive, and he needs Alexa's help! This series has a little grit, a little time travel, a little romance, and a whole lotta cozy!
By the way, all of the Fiona Quinn Mysteries, short stories, and the OWL'S NEST MYSTERIES are now available on Audible--narrated by the incredibly talented, Maren Swenson Waxenberg!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2025Fiona was happy that her personal schedule allowed her to attend her cousin's concert to be held at St. Georges Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA, where Madison would have a solo! And it was just as wonderful as everybody had hoped for! But...before the audience had even begun to leave, the conductor was found...dead...
And Madison, had found her!
Madison had become very impressed with her conductor and was happy that she would be at tonight's concert, even thought she had not been practicing with them for two weeks. Madison had brought her a bouquet of flowers to present in thanks and congratulations for the concert; however, there seemed to be so many interruptions behind the scenes, that she found herself roaming to the far location where the conductor had wanted to have her dressing room, quite often... And, the last time, she, unfortunately, was the one who found her lying on the floor--dead! And, at least once, she was threatened!
Of course Fiona had to become involved to protect her cousin... And that was quite easy since Nathan, the homicide cop assigned to the case was also Fiona's husband! Who, obviously, soon began to take on and lead the interviews of all those who had been attending the concert--allowing most of the audience to immediately leave after getting their names...
There was at least one major participant within the orchestra's group who had been seen arguing with Mila as soon as she showed up, dressed to kill, some might say, to lead that night after she had been gone for weeks during which the major practices had occurred... But there was not much that could tie anybody to the crime... Still... the concert had been held in a local church and Nathan soon headed to talk to Father Dan...
Nathan was not surprised when Father Dan shared that he felt like there was somebody else there at times but he'd looked around and nobody was there. Madison had already told him that she'd felt the same way... In an old building could there be hidden panels or other means of moving around? Nathan knew just one thing, he didn't believe in ghosts and his investigation moved forward without trying to find any long-dead ghosts...
This was one of my favorites from McDonald. It's fun, somewhat complicated, and, yet, if you allow your mind to think of "who" could be guilty, you just might figure it out before Homicide Detective Nathan Landry... Even if you don't get it totally right, LOL! Enjoy!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2025It tells about the tale of a young adult pianist – Mila, whose mentor - an ex-Russian spy was mysteriously murdered. And so, the world of Detective Nathan Landry and the household of Fiona including her neighbors (and even their household -resident ghosts) have turned upside down!
I enjoyed reading the book, especially the quirky, funny and witty pages and exchanges of Fiona and the neighbors; and Ivan and the house ghosts and his thoughts about the young Mila!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024This romance/murder/mystery plus more did not disappoint me at all. I've been reading this series, not in order, only in the order that I bought them. The added humor is always a nice touch mixed in with a dash of murder, a bit of music, a couple of Russian assassins (I wrote about that bit first), people who aren't what they purport to be, and always Grandma Ev and her two sisters pulling high jinks around others like floating coffee cups. Yet each book is different and unique.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2024I’ve always enjoyed the Fiona Quinn Mysteries but this one will be hard to top! It certainly kept me guessing right up until the end. The characters surrounding Nathan’s mom, Rita, are getting some well deserved backstory and bringing in new relatives makes for exciting new adventures or dare I say troubles. I loved how Fiona’s grandmother played such a prominent role. The story has tender relationships, espionage and intrigue, and of course Harriet with laugh out loud antics to temper some of the heart stopping suspense. Fiona's amateur sleuthing skills complement Nathan’s actual detective expertise in approaching this case from two different but cohesive angles. It’s so enjoyable to see how she picks up on things that Nate overlooks. This book was so much fun to read and I think anyone who likes cozy mysteries should definitely read this series! From the time I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down until I was finished. And I wanted more.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024Yay, another Fiona Quinn mystery! I love Fiona Quinn-Landry’s character. She’s so down to earth, likable, kind, and smart. Her husband, Detective Nathan Landry, isn’t so bad, either, and some of their interactions had me LOL!
A talented musician from Russia is found dead after a concert, and Fiona’s young cousin, Madison, is the one who finds the body.
Because Fiona is married to a detective, this story is as much a crime procedural as it is a cozy. It’s still cozy-clean without cringe-worthy gore or in-your-face violence, but the procedural aspect is important. And there are lots of law enforcement types in this story.
I had a guess as to whodunit, but I was NOT fully correct, and I actually enjoyed being somewhat wrong. It made for fun surprises at the end.
By the end of the story, I had come to care for Madison. She is just starting to blossom. I wonder if we’ll see more of her in future Fiona Quinn mysteries??
Melodies of Malice is exactly what a cozy should be, plus more with the interesting police investigation. Ooo, I wish I could say more about it, but … spoilers.
Five terrific stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024Although the editor could have done a better job, the story was great. We're taken into the world of spies and former spies with this one. The humor is there as usual, as is the suspense and mystery. How will it all turn out? You'll have to read it and find out. No spoilers from me to ruin your enjoyment of the read. Keep on writing, author C.S. McDonald. Looking forward to the next one.
