Moira's Pacific Expedition Tracking Destiny in the South Pacific (3 book series) Kindle Edition
Moira's Pacific Expedition Tracking Destiny in the South Pacific (3 book series)
Kindle Edition

Sail into the heart of the Pacific — and the mysteries of life itself.

Moira’s Pacific Expedition is a true account of one of the most extraordinary sailing voyages of modern times. Marine biologist and explorer Richard Chesher, Ph.D., invites you aboard the 44-foot research vessel Moira on a remarkable odyssey through the South Pacific — from pirate-infested seas and typhoon-ravaged waters to untouched coral reefs and ancient island cultures.

Blending nautical adventure, marine discovery, and philosophy of consciousness, this three-volume memoir explores the hidden forces that shape life — the phenomenon of emergence, the subtle role of awareness and synchronicity, and the profound interconnectedness of all living systems.

Along the way, the expedition makes groundbreaking contributions to coral reef ecology and marine conservation — including a historic victory to ban dolphin captivity — while navigating some of the most beautiful and remote ocean regions on Earth.

In this series, you’ll explore:

  • The evolution of life and consciousness in the living ocean

  • The phenomenon of emergence and inter-species awareness

  • The biological and cultural treasures of the South Pacific

  • The adventure and philosophy of true bluewater sailing

  • The personal journey of a scientist seeking deeper understanding of life’s direction and purpose

Moira’s Pacific Expedition is published as an ebook series by choice. As a lifelong marine scientist and environmentalist, Richard Chesher has chosen not to offer these books in print — to help protect forests and reduce the industrial pollution associated with paper-based publishing. By offering the series in digital form, we invite readers to explore the ocean’s wonders while contributing to the health of the planet.

If you are drawn to sailing memoirs, nature writing, marine biology, adventure nonfiction, or the philosophy of life and consciousness, this unique series will inspire and expand your horizons.

2

A true story of adventure, discovery, and compassion on the high seas.

In the second volume of Moira’s Pacific Expedition, marine biologist Richard Chesher, Ph.D., and the crew of the Research Vessel Moira set sail once again — this time to the remote Louisiade and Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea.

Conducting marine resource research for the Papua New Guinea Fisheries Department, the expedition immerses itself in the extraordinary biological diversity and cultural richness of these island communities.

But the voyage soon takes an unexpected turn. In Australia, an encounter with an ancient sage inspires a bold mission to rescue captive dolphins from a cement pool — a fight that culminates in a historic legal victory: Victoria and South Australia become the first regions to ban dolphin captivity for entertainment.

In this volume, sail with the Moira through:

  • The isolated coral archipelagos of Papua New Guinea

  • Encounters with vibrant, ancient island cultures

  • Groundbreaking marine biology research

  • The inspiring campaign to free dolphins and change public policy

  • Reflections on empathy, awareness, and the delicate balance of life in the ocean

If you’re drawn to marine conservation, sailing memoirs, adventure stories, or the philosophy of life and consciousness, To Change offers an unforgettable, true account of exploration and compassion on the open sea.

3

A thrilling South Pacific voyage — and a profound exploration of life’s deepest mysteries.

In the third volume of Moira’s Pacific Expedition, marine biologist and philosopher Richard Chesher, Ph.D., sets sail once more — on a journey both across the Pacific and deep into the nature of awareness, emergence, and interconnected life.

The adventure begins in a violent storm at Elizabeth Reef, an uncharted submerged atoll in the Tasman Sea. As the voyage continues through New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, Fiji, Wallis Island, Western Samoa, and Tutuila, Chesher wrestles with one profound question:
How do emergent layers of being evolve, communicate, and create the thread of awareness that connects all life?

Along the way, the expedition encounters isolated coral reefs, vibrant island cultures, and stunning natural phenomena — each offering new insights into the phenomenon of emergence and the invisible forces shaping our living world.

In this volume, sail with the Moira through:

  • The storm-ravaged Tasman Sea and submerged atolls

  • Remote island chains of the South Pacific

  • Explorations of consciousness and emergent life

  • The evolving thread of awareness across species and systems

  • Reflections on how language shapes and limits our understanding of reality

If you are fascinated by sailing adventure, nature writing, emergence theory, consciousness studies, or the philosophy of life, To Have Direction offers a unique blend of true maritime adventure and deep scientific and philosophical inquiry.

Bonjour, I'm Frederique Lesne Chesher (Freddy), Captain of the Research Vessel Moira.

Born in French Morocco, I carry a mix of French, Mongolian, and Italian heritage, with a lineage steeped in adventure—my ancestors were corsairs, privateers who shared their spoils with the King of France before settling in North Africa to escape the turmoil of the French Revolution. My grandfather, a master of dowsing and other ancient perceptions, held a deep understanding of our living planet. When I fell gravely ill as a baby, he injected me with seawater—a remedy that miraculously cured me and forever tied me to the ocean.

In 1976, I joined Richard Chesher, Ph.D., on an expedition to the South Pacific aboard the Research Vessel Moira. Richard, a renowned marine biologist, had already gained fame through his research on Crown-of-Thorns starfish, his participation in the Tektite II underwater habitat, and his record-setting deep-sea saturation dives. At the time, he was Vice President of the Marine Research Foundation, operating a 60' catamaran for coral reef expeditions in Florida and the Bahamas. He sold that vessel to purchase a Kelly-Peterson 44’ cutter being built in Taiwan. He named it the Moira after the Moirae, the Three Sisters of Fate from Greek mythology. Together, we set sail to investigate evolution and the invisible forces shaping life and destiny.

Moira's Pacific Expedition cruised the South Pacific islands doing research into the interaction of humans with their marine and island ecosystems. Our research uncovered fascinating insights into the forces of evolution and destiny and we conducted experiments on ways to change the behavior of the people to improve the fauna, flora and resources of their islands.

After the turn of the century, we channeled our extensive cruising and scientific experience into creating the Rocket Cruising and Travel Guides to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. These guides, hailed as some of the best in the world, provide unparalleled detail to help cruising sailors plan and enjoy their adventures in these magical islands. Packed with precise GPS coordinates, thousands of high-resolution images, and insider tips, the guides have become essential companions for those exploring these enchanting waters.
