Molly Boys (London Underside Book 1) Kindle Edition
London 1885:
For Lord Everett Stanley, escaping his fate seemed impossible. As the second son, he’s destined for ordination and the life of a Reverend, but he’s hiding a dangerous secret. The laws punishing homosexuality by hanging may have been repealed but he and others of his kind are far from safe. Given no other choice, they take solace in the underground molly houses of London. Now that fragile world is threatened when the East End is rocked by a series of gruesome murders.
Inspector Archibald Franklin worked hard to overcome his working-class roots, making a name for himself as a respected inspector of Whitechapel’s H Division, but when he begins to investigate the deaths of several beautiful young men, fate throws him into the path of the handsome and enigmatic Lord Stanley. His gut instinct tells him the young lord knows more about the murders than he lets on, but the closer he gets, the more Everett calls to him in a way he’s tried to deny his whole life.
As a reign of terror grips London, they are drawn together in order to stop a monster, but for Archie, the growing feelings he has for Everett are a betrayal of the very laws he has sworn to uphold. And as the killer closes in, the two men find themselves bound together by a passion that may be their ultimate salvation or their utter destruction…

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2023I went into this book blind, not even reading the blurb. Vawn Cassidy is a new to me author and I didn’t know what to expect.
Let me tell you that I was happily surprised by the quality of the writing as by the strength of the plot.
I loved stepping inside two secret “Molly houses” and seeing some of the depravity within 🥵🥵
The slow burn hooked me, and the world Cassidy sketched out for us intrigued me: abductions, murders, butchery, opium hazes, and drug fueled sex.
The mystery was fairly strong, with a paranormal twist at the end that sets the stage for further investigation.
The timeline, at times was a little confusing, (hence the 4.5 stars).
I wish this were on audiobook and that I could hear all of the different London accents. One can hope!
Overall, I loved this opposites attract, police procedural in Victorian London and am happy I took a chance on a new author. Get ready to watch an Inspector battle his urges as he is inexplicably drawn to a young Lord.
Triggers: drug use, mutilated bodies, bloodletting.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2023This certainly had an unexpected plot twist!
It was eye opening to read about the Molly houses and the social conditions of the poor.
The story is more mystery, with a slow burn romance. There is some comic relief with some of the secondary characters, but it's a bit of a dark story. It kept me riveted. Now to see how Ev and Archie navigate the new turn of events!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2023I don't know what I was expecting when I started to read this book, I knew it was a mystery and that was enough for me. But this book was so much more and I absolutely loved the twist, it was a nice deviation from the norm. The relationship/romance was a slow burn and a little different but I guess it had something to do with the Victorian era of this story. Since Homosexuality was against the law back then, I can almost understand why the author chose to easily depicted sex between some of the characters but skimp on the love/romance aspect of it. It was kind of nice knowing the POVs of the different characters, it just added another level to this story. This is the type of story you just don't want to put down or end, yes it was that good. My only issue with this story... the ending (Not A Fan) and the fact that it ended with neither a HEA or a HFN. Yes, we have a cliffhanger :(!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2023This book is amazing! It is very focused on the time that the two MC's live in and with the fear that gay men lived with during the Victorian period of history (in London, at least.) The author doesn't hold back in regards the the harsh times these were for a lot of people with pollution, smells, hygiene, lack of jobs, prostitution, starvation, and so many other things.
The romance is slow burn and between the second son from a titled family and a young police Police Inspector. This is a mildly angsty story as they each deal with their daily lives. One MC turns to trying to dull his realities with drugs and alcohol while the other represses his needs to get by. There is a major twist in the mystery part of the story at the end, plus a sad, mild cliffhanger as well. I can't wait for more books because I need to know how so many things will develop with so many aspects of the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2023Lots of aspects of this book - a Ripper-vibe murder mystery set in London’s gay underworld c. 1885 - were compelling, but I was continually pulled out of the story by one of my biggest pet peeves: incorrect usage of titles and inheritance law. It is very hard to buy into the historical world an author is building when they are getting basic building block of it wrong; for example, repeatedly referring to a Marquess as Lord FirstName and his younger brother, occasionally, as Lord LastName. Or a titled character using his will to change who his titles would go to upon his death (a thing he would have absolutely no control over). It’s funny how many (often American) authors of historical British fiction can spend time painstakingly researching maps of Victorian London’s streets, or the year the sewer system was implemented, or any number of other details, but fail to spend any time getting right something that would have been as inborn-instinct for their characters as what they would call each other.
Disappointing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2023This was my first book from this author, and I am on pins and needles waiting for the next in the series! We get a good view into the characters and what is driving them and what boxes them in, for better or for worse. The writing drew me in with vivid descriptions and lovely world building, and there's a great sense of place and at times a feeling of dread simmering below the surface.. The MCs were really appealing and deserve happiness, but it looks like there's a long road ahead. There's a bit of a cliffhanger, and I hope #2 comes along very soon. Overall terrific book that I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2023𝑶𝑴𝑮, I am still 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘬 over this book. Safe to state it was VERY much more than expected.
The reader will gain a powerful insight into the highly dangerous, secretive and often hedonistic world of men who desire the company of other men. 𝑴𝒚 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 '𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕' 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹.
There are multiple POVs, including the victims and the villains. Absolutely heartbreaking.
This entire story {not just the romantic aspect} is a slow burn, and I positively 𝘢𝘵𝘦. 𝘪𝘵. 𝘶𝘱. After beginning this read and experiencing how emotional it was, I had 𝒁𝑬𝑹𝑶 intentions of reading it through without a buffer. I even downloaded a lighthearted read to switch off … 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2023I'm not sure if I can put into words how good this story is. I wasn't sure how things were going to go at the start of it. The more I got into it, the more intriguing the story got. By the end, the only disappointment I was feeling was for the fact that I dont know how long I have to wait for the next book to come out.
I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

5.0 out of 5 stars We need a book 2
Loved this Victorian story of mystery, murder, romance and so much more. There is an incredible amount of characters from every walk of life, from street urchins to lords. Each are incredibly well written and so distinctive. As i turned the pages it was like the removing layers of paint and wallpapers of an old house. There were lively color paint others dark and some poisonous. It is a story that I will read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantástico

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story
A very exciting read, I've always loved tales set in the roughness of the Victorian era. The horrendous crimes verses the heady sexual escapades make this a very addictive story. BUT, oh that ending, so frustrating, but there is more to come, thank goodness, this author cannot leave us like this! A truly wonderful Story.
