A Moment in Time: A Romantic Suspense Novel Kindle Edition
He's an ex-con; she's his teacher. Will their secret pasts destroy them, or be the key to their redemption?
Lily Macarthur teaches psychology at an adult ed. school by day, and runs from her past every chance she gets. When she attends course registration the last week of summer break, she never imagines she'll meet a student with a past as mysterious as her own.
Chad Anderson is instantly attracted to Lily, but he's been in prison for so long, he knows better than to expect such an intelligent woman to fall for a guy like him. He takes a risk and signs up for her class, hoping to get to know her better, and to start over.
A chance encounter one fall night throws the unlikely pair together for survival, friendship, and perhaps something more. But forces beyond their control threaten to destroy more than just their reputations. In a world full of bystanders, will someone take a stand against evil?
Everything can change in A Moment in Time.
Based on a true beginning, this romantic-suspense novel contains a psychological twist that will leave you questioning everything.

Everything can change in A MOMENT IN TIME.

He's an ex-con; she's his teacher. Will their secret pasts destroy them, or be the key to their redemption? Find out in this second-chance romance.
She opens her eyes and smiles at me. “Aren’t you going to have one?”
“Yeah, sure,” I say. I sound like an idiot – can’t get anything intelligent out when I’m around her. I bite into a fritter and drink more coffee. We both eat another doughnut, but the dish Nic brought is still piled high.
“We can ask Nic for a box; you should take them home,” she tells me as she stands beside the table.
I shake my head and reply, “Naw, I don’t need them.” I drain the last of my coffee and stand, too.
“Why not?” Ms. Macarthur questions, gazing at me curiously, “you have a great body already!”
I blink at her. Did she just say that to me? “Well – – so, do you,” I reply. Did I just tell her I’ve been checking her out? Can I say that to my teacher?
There's a new technology that allows you to view a movie of your unborn baby's future life.

Lina is a drug-addicted dancer who locates the soothsayer's business. The movie she views is A MOMENT IN TIME. Which character is her unborn child?
The woman clears her throat loudly. “Did you read the conditions?” She raps her wizened knuckles against the plaque. “That’s my promise; the rest is up to Time.”
“Time?” Lina repeats. “You make it sound like a person.”
“Did you bring enough?” the woman asks, ignoring Lina’s disbelief. “Fifty gets you inside.”
“Fifty?” Lina groans. “I only have forty. Isn’t there something I can afford?”
The woman studies Lina’s face with the wisdom of true sight. Then, she shakes her head stiffly and responds airily, “Fifty is bottom of the barrel; gets you in – you see what Time allows. After that, it’s up to you.”

I brush a lock of hair off her cheek without thinking. “I hope you’re not sick tomorrow.”
“I’ll be fine; I’m fine now,” she insists.
We pull into her driveway. I toss the driver a twenty and hurry around to open the door for Ms. Macarthur. She grasps both my hands and wobbles to her feet. “You don’t look fine,” I laugh.
“You don’t get an opinion,” she tells me firmly as the cab pulls away.
“Because you’re my teacher?” I question as I steer her towards her porch steps.
“Exactly!” she exclaims as her left leg buckles. Fortunately, I’m holding her arm, so I wrap it more firmly around her waist and she slouches against me. “I’m okay – just these heels. Not used to them…”
“You wear heels every day,” I laugh, helping her climb the steps.
“You should be looking at the chalkboard, not my feet!”
“Good point,” I agree. We’ve reached the top of the stairs now. “Where’s your key?”
“In a very good hiding place,” she responds mysteriously, shaking her purse at me.
"A killer mix of romance and suspense."

"This was my first book by this author, and I absolutely loved it. I fell in love with the well-drawn characters, which have both strengths and weaknesses. The romance was fantastic, and a mystery just added that extra spice. A delightful read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves mystery and romance." - Amazon Review
"There is a shocking final scene that brings all aspects of the story together. It is done with skillful brilliance and one realizes the author has powerfully done everything in the book with control and precision. The surprise ending of fairy-tale charm brings the book title into focus. Life works out beautifully as we work to make things happen, when we engage the right actions without hesitation!" - Red Butler, Amazon Review
"The main story of Lily and Chad's slow and defensive path to a romantic connection is well-balanced between fear and desire, which will please hard-style romantic readers." - Kerry L. Reis, Amazon Review

Excerpt:
"Finally, the suit says I can go ahead and it's my lucky day: there's an empty seat in front of the librarian. I check her out as I cross the room. She's wearing most of her hair down. It falls past her shoulders in soft brown waves, but she's got part of it pinned up at the back. Classy as hell. When I reach the table, I see she's wearing a jade dress that should be illegal for a teacher. I suddenly feel uneasy; what if I make a fool of myself in front of her? It's been years since I've been in school.
"How can I help you?" Her voice is smooth and kind, and I get lost in her brilliant, chocolate eyes as I take a seat on the metal chair in front of her. I set my documents down on the table and clear my throat.
"I want to take a class," I begin. She's already reaching for my papers.
"May I?" she asks, but she's assertive and doesn't wait for me to reply. I'm impressed. She unfolds my transcript and I watch her face as she takes a pencil and begins to circle things on the paper. Christ, she's sexy. She's got long eyelashes and the dress is painted onto her skin. "It looks like you only need four credits to graduate," she tells me. I force myself to look into her eyes as she lifts her head, but it takes effort. I'm starving.
"Are you sure?" I question, feeling confused. I'm pretty certain I earned piss all when I was in actual high school, eons ago.
Her eyes crinkle at the corners as she smiles at me. My heart stops and I want to shove the table out of the way and kiss her, but instead I focus on her mouth and the words coming out of her red lips. "Yes, I'm sure," she replies easily. She points to my transcript and explains, "see, because of when you first started high school, we can grant you several maturity credits. Once you start classes, just make an appointment with one of the guidance counsellors and they'll get the credits added onto your transcript. Four courses - that's it...Chad Anderson is it?"
"Yeah," I start to reply, but I quickly add, "yes, Chad. And you are?"
"Ms. Macarthur," she answers with another smile. She's giving me her last name. I love it.
"Okay, Ms. Macarthur," I say, feeling some of my confidence returning, "and do I ask for you, when I make the appointment?" I see her eyes flutter to my arm. Damn. I wish I'd worn something to cover my sleeve.
She smiles again and shakes her head. I want to eat this woman, she's so adorable. "No, I'm just a teacher," she replies, sounding almost ashamed. I hate that she's ashamed. She should have her chin in the air, as overconfident as the bitchy-looking one at the other table. She's a teacher for Christ's sake.
"So, what do I need to take?" I ask, trying to change the subject, "what class do you suggest?" I have a brochure in my back pocket with the course I'd planned to register for: grade 11 intro. to tech. I thought it'd be a joke, since I could teach the damn course. I spent the past few years building shit to keep my mind occupied, instead of focused on how much time I had left and, before that, I ran my own business.
She glances at my arm again and then quickly looks away. Yeah, I should have covered up. Borrowed a tie. "The four courses have to be senior level - either grade eleven or twelve. And one of them has to be English. You're missing your last one. It's up to you, but I'd suggest if you've been out of school for a while to take an intro. course like tourism or tech."
"What do you teach, Ms. Macarthur?" I ask boldly. Her expression changes to surprise.
"I don't know," she responds, but then realizes that doesn't sound honest. "What I mean to say is that I won't know until after registration finishes; our assignments are based on numbers."
"Of course," I persist, "but what do you normally teach?"
She laughs lightly and I love the sound of it: like wind chimes in a breeze. "I normally teach social science, Chad," she answers, "so intro. to sociology this term."
"Then that's what I'll take," I tell her, "intro. to sociology it is." She looks startled, and I enjoy the way she licks her lips and reaches for her pencil again.
"O-kay," she says as she fills the course code in on my form, adding her initials beside the selection to indicate she's approved the choice. Her nails are filed in neat circles and painted scarlet to match her lips. She stops writing and glances back up at me. "I just need to see some photo ID and you can take this form and pay at the office." She waits for me to pull out my wallet - to produce something - but I hesitate.
"I don't really have anything on me," I tell her, "nothing with my picture on it, anyway..." I watch her face closely to see if she's buying it.
"Nothing?" she questions incredulously, "not even a license?"
I shake my head. "No, I forgot it. Can't you just say I showed you? I promise I'm Chad Anderson." I can tell she's struggling to make a decision, so I try to work on her a little more. "Why don't you let it slide today? Next week, when classes start, I'll bring in my ID," I suggest.
She pauses again and glances to her right at the red-head as if checking to see if anyone's listening to us. "I'm sorry, Chad," she apologizes, "but I can't approve your registration unless I see some photo ID. You don't have anything with you?"
I want to disappear beneath the floorboards; instead, I pull my wallet out of my back pocket and produce the only ID I've got right now. I slide it across to her and she lifts it with her delicate hand. I bet her skin is soft - would love to feel her -
She's recognized what the card's for, but she tries not to show her surprise - or is it fear? The expression in her eyes is wary now. "Thanks, Chad," she murmurs and quickly hands back my card. I don't make eye contact as she tells me I'm finished.
I stand and collect my documents. Before I move away, I try to get her to look at me when I say, "thank you, Ms. Macarthur. See you next week," but she's staring at the entrance to the gym as if searching for someone in the line of students. Her brow is furrowed and she still looks scared. I head to the office to pay my twenty bucks. Damn."

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2025This book is quite a ride! Admittedly, however, there were a couple times I had to put it down...not because the romance was too spicy or the descriptions of domestic violence too much (both were quite tame, actually), but because parts of it hit too close to home and conjured flashbacks of previous relationships. I had to give myself time to sort of reset with a better understanding of what I was getting into during those chapters.
Speaking of chapters, they're short and easy to follow along. They alternate between the main characters' POVs, moving the story along at an excellent pace. The writing is crisp...snap it in half like a cracker and there's hardly any crumbs. It's so well-detailed you almost forget there's supposed to be a twist at the end.
Overall, an excellent read. You can almost picture it happening like a movie, or a miniseries. Glad I picked this book up and gave it a chance...I think you'll agree with me that the author did an excellent job weaving everything together.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022I may have to re-read this story just because I cried so much for each character. I love the way this story is about time. Time to see our future. Time to deal with our past. And time to love our present. Lily and Chad may be two of my favorite flawed characters. They needed each other in more ways then just love. What a beautiful story that will have you so emotional at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021A Moment In Time had been in my list for quite some time. On a whim, I pulled it up today and could not put it down! The beginning is strange but once you get to the meat of the story, it keeps you engaged. I was rooting for Chad most of the time and hoping poor Lily would be able to get past her horrible history. Their quarrels were sometimes a bit over the top but I’m a passive aggressive person by nature. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2021Lily, having separated herself from an abusive husband, is a high school teacher who has been assigned to teach an anthropology class to a small group of adults who came up a few classes short of graduating in their teen years. Chad, recently paroled from prison, is one of her adult students. Both find themselves attracted to each other, but their current teacher-student relationship, as well as their hidden pasts, keep them from acting on their impulses. However, the arrival of Lily’s stalking husband defensively brings them together. The main story of Lily and Chad’s slow and defensive path to a romantic connection is well-balanced between fear and desire, which will please hard-style romantic readers. Yet, the short intro scene that positions their story as a virtual presentation to another woman trying to experience another moment in time may confuse the reader at the start. Even though its purpose sets up an ending moment of suspense, some readers may enjoy just passing through this plot device and focusing on the main suspenseful romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2023What a fantastic story!! I usually don’t like Romance, but this read kept me going page after page!! Bravo!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2021Herein lies the skilled author’s curveball product, a tale of one deeply misguided woman seeking resolution to a perceived problem. She discovers a Shakespeare quoting soothsayer offering notions of time and mysteries.
She peers into what can be into the lives of Lily, a 29 year old commanding school teacher with personal life of wreckage and Chad, a 35 year old ex-con, still doing hard time though he has paid his price. They are about to meet when Chad registers for adult ed classes. We get realistic interchanges from both points of view and the book is largely fast dialogue and true to the real existential world. From the time of registering in her class, these two singles keep running into each other. Lily has a problem with an ex-husband stalking her and Chad becomes a reluctant buffer. We are taken on a ride into these getting to know the mysteries of each other. Things that cause repulsion and reticence to care for another human. Of course, there is a caveat for hard profanity, hard drinking and some rather smoldering sexual situations within the pages. The sexual scenes are handled tastefully without the cheap acidic tomatoes against the wall porn slant.
The story moves fast and it actually becomes more than the surface tale of a school teacher and an ex-con so young, full of 2000s madness and life uncertainty. There is more than too much looney tunes back and forth with the romance, enough to breach the term melodrama in fullness. This was a downside. Both of them are hiding heavy truths. The secrets must be told for there to be any union beyond sexual amore.
All of this reminded me that so many young today worry about being messed up inside, in their heads (both modern melodrama and a weak obsessive society of brainwashing from being taught all the wrong things) are robbing, ROBBING themselves of time by not modeling a behavior they know to be correct. It is that simple.
There is a shocking final scene that brings all aspects of the story together. It is done with skillful brilliance and one realizes the author has powerfully done everything in the book with control and precision. The surprise ending of fairy-tale charm brings the book title into focus. Life works out beautifully as we work to make things happen, when we engage the right actions without hesitation!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2022This novel is one ginormous intriguing romance. Why? Elements that seem impossible happen. I love the happily ever after books but this novel has darkness involved, almost a murder by a crazy ex and the mind games are horrible. Love prevails and anyone can get past trials and tribulations, alone or with help. Resources are available. NOTE: If the use of the f bomb bothers, then don't read this book. If abuses, especially sexual, bothers or triggers you, don't read this book. If neither of those bother you, then do read this book and try to figure out the psychological events.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2021This romance had some extra spice when it starts out with a fortune teller showing a girl what the future could be for her baby. The romance between Lily and Chad was explosive. Each were keeping their own secrets but still trying to make the relationship work. I loved the mystery of the way it ended, back to the fortune teller. I really enjoyed this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
A killer mix of romance and suspense. Two strong but torn characters with dangerous secrets that could ruin them both. Drawn towards each other, would they be able to accept their love and get over their fears or would they give up? Read and find out!

5.0 out of 5 stars The authenticity of the prose may resonate deeply with readers!
A Moment in Time is a poignant psychological romance penned by independent author, J.G. MacLeod. The narrative follows the relationship between an adult education teacher, Lilly, and a parolee, Chad, who strives to rebuild his life.
The story unfolds through a captivating first-person perspective that alternates between the protagonists. This distinctive approach offers readers an intimate glimpse into the characters' thoughts and emotions, heightening the tension during pivotal moments.
Despite their mismatched backgrounds, both Lilly and Chad harbour their own personal struggles and traumas. MacLeod skillfully crafts raw and evocative scenes that emphasise the necessity of confronting one's past in order to move forward.
A Moment in Time is a captivating tale of two kindred spirits who discover solace and healing in each other's company. The authenticity of the prose may resonate deeply with readers, as it reflects the genuine nature of the author's writing. Well worth a read!

Wow this book is good. It had me confused for a bit and it makes you think. The couple each had things they needed to work through but I enjoyed the journey. I am happy the last chapter was included I was puzzled for a bit.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book
I had to wonder if this book was written by a teenager. The immaturity of Lily. The foolishness of an old woman selling a look into a future that might or might not be. Back to an old Lily and Chad. This might just be the worst book i've ever read.
