Murder, I Spy: A Dora and Rex Mystery (Dora and Rex 1920s Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,053 ratings

When a bright young man teams up with a glamorous femme fatale, the identity of a murderer won't be the only secret they'll unmask.

London, 1922. Between gallivanting in his Rolls-Royce and darkening the doorways of London's hotspots, Lord Reginald “Rex” Bankes-Fernsby has almost succeeded in banishing the battlefield nightmares that plague his sleep. Pity he can't say the same about that nagging lack of direction in his life.

If only he were like his best friend Freddie - self-assured, suave, and up to his ears in secrets. But when Freddie is murdered, Rex doubts the verdict. Was Freddie really cut down while up to no good or was he killed in the line of duty?

Rex turns to the only person in London capable of helping him find out - Theodora Laurent, London’s most notorious femme fatale and Freddie's last known lover.

Theodora has a hundred reasons to let sleeping cats lie, but those disappear into the aether when Rex shows up on her doorstep and someone takes a shot at her head. Together, they’re catapulted into a race for their lives, where identifying the murderer is their only hope for survival.

There’s just one problem. Freddie wasn’t the only one keeping secrets. If Theodora isn’t careful, Rex’s search for the truth could send her cunningly constructed empire falling like dominos.

Murder, I Spy is the first book in this exciting 1920s historical mystery series.

One of the best historical /cozy mysteries I've read! The main character Dora is strong and vibrant. Aided by two close associates she's a force to be reckoned with! All the other characters are interesting and well placed in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the attention to detail in the places they go and the real world setting with all the historical markers. I want to say more on the plot but I also want you the reader to enjoy it firsthand! There's a hysterically funny incident between two of the villain's henchmen that caught me off guard and lightened the moment. The author generously offers a prequel to Murder I Spy as well as a bonus epilogue which adds a new and quite delightful character!
This is shaping up to be an exceptionally bright series!

I liked the first Dora and Rex mystery. Plenty of intrigue, peeks into life in 1922 England, and the long-term plan of the series shown to the reader. Ms. Morrison is a good writer. The book had two annoying factors, however. Dora was too perfect. A heroine with flaws (not just secrets) is more endearing than one who seems to gloat about being several steps ahead of everyone else. Hope she makes a few mistakes in the next book (which I've ordered). The other item was a time frame concerning wars. It was easy to figure out Rex served in the Great War. But references are made about other men fighting more than a decade ago. Is that the Boer or Crimea Wars? Since it's important to the plot, I felt it should've been named. Otherwise, this book is a wonderful addition to historical cozies. Recommended.

I Spy IS so well written that you feel very special being let in on some of the secrets yet keeps you in suspense on the bigger mystery. Excellent read.

I have no complaints about this book. It did take me two evenings to read it. But the characters are convincing, the storyline works. But for me, it’s the character of Dora, who kept me turning pages. The circle of friends that she acquires in her England, also make it one of the better books I read lately.

I do like a good mystery, this story has it in spades. Lord Rex is saddened by the murder of his childhood friend & Scotland Yards announcement they've shelved the case. He decides to look into the murder himself hoping to uncover the murderer. In doing so, Rex meets his friend Freddie's girlfriend, Theodora; a stunning beauty who hides a secret.
This book held my interest keeping me in suspense until I found out the murderer & the mystery surrounding the murder.
Looking forward to reading more by this author.

I’ve had this one on my Kindle for a year now and decided to give it a go.

I did enjoy the female protagonist Dora as a strong, intelligent and independent undercover spy, but I wasn’t really fond of her partner Rex or their relationship. And unfortunately, since I’m very much a character-driven reader, it just didn’t entertain me like I was hoping for. Probably won’t continue on with the series.

Lynn Morrison is a first rate writer of historical mysteries. I loved her Oxford Key books. I am loving her Dora and Rex books. They're the kind of books that have you on the edge of your seat as if you are a part of realistic threatening situations. She really has researched the societal environment and politics for this period. When an author makes you see the settings in your mind and feel the emotions of the characters, they are definitely gifted.

Post WW I. Jazz. British aristocracy. Murder and collusion. The foundation for a remarkable and well-written mystery. I cannot wait to read more in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, good description and detail, fantastic read!

After being introduced to the characters in the prequel, have waited for this book for what seems ages and, surprisingly, devoured it in almost one sitting (is raining so nothing else need my attention). All I’ll say is attention to historical detail is great, storyline is also great and may (or may not) step outside of historical fact as it’s still very believable.

Why do American authors insist on stating names like I am the eldest son of Earl Rivers. That is an Americanism calling people Duke Avon or Earl rivers. They are the Duke of Avon and the Earl of Rivers. Also no one would call the dowager Duchess lady Rockingham and if Dora was from a well to do British family she would know this. The dowager is your Grace always !!!
It would be solecism to refer to a duchess dowager or otherwise as lady.

Great start to a new series. Rex and Dora are great people and the inclusion of real life characters and places made it all the more enjoyable. The story was well paced with some surprising twists and turns and I didn't figure out whodunit until the end. Looking forward to the next book
