Introducing Frances Evesham...
One day I walked on a peaceful Somerset beach and discovered a unique nine-legged Victorian lighthouse. My first Agatha Christie-style murder mystery, Murder at the Lighthouse, was born that day. Like many of my readers, I love Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Murder She Wrote, and the grand tradition of whodunnits with intriguing puzzles to solve, villains who must be brought to justice, and amateur private investigators. The Exham-On-Sea series is set in a small seaside town very like my own home, surrounded by the wonderful rolling hills of the West Country. It’s the perfect place to indulge my obsessions with beautiful places, cake and chocolate, overgrown dogs, and self-possessed cats. In my spare time I collect poison recipes and other ways of dispatching my unfortunate victims. I like to cook with a glass of wine in one hand and a bunch of chillies in the other, my head full of murder―fictional only. I love to hear from readers, so don’t be a stranger!
Happy reading! Frances

The Exham on Sea contemporary crime series is set in a small seaside town very like my own home, surrounded by the wonderful rolling hills, green levels and narrow lanes of the West Country. It's the perfect place to indulge my obsessions with beautiful places, cake and chocolate, overgrown dogs, and aloof, self-possessed cats.
In my spare time, I collect poison recipes and other ways of dispatching my unfortunate victims. I like to cook with a glass of wine in one hand and a bunch of chillies in the other, my head full of fictional murder.
About the Author
Now, she writes mystery stories: the Exham on Sea contemporary cozy crime series set in a small Somerset seaside town, the new Ham Hill murder mystery series set in a country hotel in an English village, and the Thatcham Hall Mysteries, 19th Century historical mystery romances set in Victorian England.
She collects poison recipes and cooks with a glass of wine in one hand and a bunch of chillies in the other, her head full of ingenious ways to dispatch her victims - in fiction, of course.
She's been a speech therapist and a road sweeper, and worked in the criminal courts seeing crime from all points of view: victim, prosecution and defence. Spending time in the dock and the witness box alongside witnesses taught her more about motive, means and opportunity than she could ever have imagined.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019the series centers around a widow and her new life in a small shore town called exham. she is a great baker and came from a troubled background- abusive husband for one. however, she meets an interesting cast of characters in this small town and of course, she has a nose for murder and solving it. there is love along the way, surprising you with the murderer. start with the first in the 6 book series as much of it changes and evolves through the series. entertaining!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt strikes me as strange that so many people grow old, but never really mature, holding hard to the past. The characters in this small tourist town are just people who went to college together in the 1960's when like many students of the day, they lived the life of free sex, experimented with various drugs and were given LSD by the very young professor in the group. They all were hiding something from the two newest crime detectives that are falling in love. The old group hid things using history, myth and the creepiness of Glastonbury Tor and its ties to King Arthur to keep them focused in the far past and creepy atmosphere of the Tor, old jewelry that's made the rounds to hide the murders and burial tomb, using the past to hide the very common reasons for murder. Who knows but the mystery is complicated by all the college group from back in the 1960s and now in their 60"s or 70"s. But the reasons for the deaths are just simple jealousy, greed, and making more money than they should. But they kept killing anyone who even mentioned some word or memory of what really happened to the young group that was just the same old sordid reasons why people kill. If you love the great old mysteries of Agatha Christie, and Arthur Conan Doyle. You'll be glad you found a great Mystery writer of today.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2016This is well written. You will be glued to it from first page to the end. Characters are believable. Situations seem real so you can dig right into the story yourself. Although the story is a bit sort, it is long enough to be able to put forth a complete and interesting tale. I have a few problems with the typing though. I have Kindle and the double words and other things make you pause. I recommend this book for age sixteen and up
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2019This is a light, fairly short read. It’s listed at 188 pages, but approximately the last 20 are promos for the author’s other books.
This is not a zany type of cozy nor is it particularly humorous. It’s just a nice mystery and romance story that takes place in a small English village filled with quaintness, quirkiness, and a murderer or two. The characters come across as quite real and people you might like to know. This particular story propels along the romance of the two main characters, fifty-ish Libby and Max, who finally kiss. From the first book in the series, they seemed to have an attraction and respect for each other as well as a mutual interest in sleuthing. In this book, they forge a partnership to open a Private Investigations business together.
This particular story deals with a murder that occurred on Glastonbury Tor, which is a real tor (“hill” for us Americans) that you can wiki if you’d like to learn more about it. I found the story to be a bit convoluted, featuring legends and amber beads. I zone out with talk of ancient legends (though it was pertinent to the story), so that distracted from my enjoyment which is why I rated it 3 stars.
Secondary to the main story above, the book also delves further into the illegal activities of Libby’s deceased husband which she only found out about after he died. The book does reveal an interesting reason why Max intentionally met Libby: the possibility that she was a co-conspirator in her husband’s money laundering scheme.
The book has no graphic violence, no graphic sex, and no foul language.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017Libby is a chocolatier as well as a baker. She has established her new life in Exham On Sea. She has Mandy, a roommate who helps her with her business as well as is a good friend. She has Max who helps her investigate mysteries. The two of them make a productive team. All of this keeps Libby involved in the life in her new home town. She is trying to overcome her past. Her late husband was a con man and embezzler. She found out after his death, what he had been doing. That is when she realized she needed a new start and a new life.
When she is walking Bear, Max's dog on Glastonbury Tor, she meets a silent little girl and finds some ancient amber beads. After getting lost in the fog, and finally finding her way back down the tor, she runs into policemen. It seems a man has died at the top of the tor and they are there to investigate.
This is what begins the most recent adventure.
Libby is determined to find out what actually happened to the man who died. She does not believe he took his own life. She is also determined to find out who is the small girl who did not speak.
The questions and their answers lead into the past. Libby and Max are led back to the sixties when drugs were everywhere and free love was the only way to fly.
The plot takes Libby along with the reader to more questions than answers.
This is part of a series, but it works as a stand alone read. Each book provides more information about Libby, her life and the people around her. That is why if you get the chance, I recommend you start at the beginning. I believe you will enjoy every read.
Ms Evesham has created a good mystery which is engaging and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2017This is the second book I've read by Frances Evesham. This one is just as good as Murder at the Lighthouse. Great Story that begins at a high point and stayed there. Libby and Max are investigating a mysterious suicide that turns out to be a murder that ends up....... oops. I can't tell you the whole story. You need to read it. Enjoy.
