Novelista Girl (The Blogger Girl Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 147 ratings

Feisty New Yorker Kimberly Long runs the most popular chick lit book blog on the web, loves playing house with her sexy lawyer boyfriend, Nicholas, and is finally pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a published author.

At first glance, her life is worthy of five pink champagne flutes. But is there more to the story than meets the eye?

After hearing the phrase “chick lit is dead” more times than she’s read
The Devil Wears Prada, Kim is driven to desperate measures, seeking advice from up-and-coming chick lit author, Hannah Marshak, her high school nemesis and resident “mean girl.”

As if Kim doesn’t have enough on her plate balancing her secretarial duties with her blog,
Pastel is the New Black, shrugging off the growing pile of agent rejections, and keeping her best friend from turning green over Kim’s budding friendship with Hannah, Nicholas is so blinded by his career ambitions, he doesn’t see that their home sweet home could use more than a dash of sugar.

This is the year when all of Kim’s dreams—professional and romantic—are supposed to come true, but will her story have a happily ever after or will Kim end up unpublished and all alone?

Review

"Meredith Schorr writes novels that pull you in, with characters you want to hang out with for real." Eileen Goudge, New York Times bestselling author

"A great chick lit book: a strong and confident heroine, a sexy boyfriend you can crush on, supportive friends, and plenty of conflict leading to comical results, culminating in a very satisfying ending." - Erin Brady, Bestselling Author of The Shopping Swap

"Even when mean girls sidle up to be frenemies while throwing obstacles in her way--both professionally and personally--Kimmie more than holds her own in these battles of wit and this true journey of the heart." - Josie Brown, Author of The Housewife Assassin's Handbook Series

About the Author

A born-and-bred New Yorker, Meredith Schorr discovered her passion for writing when she began to enjoy drafting work-related emails way more than she was probably supposed to. After trying her hand penning children’s stories and blogging her personal experiences, Meredith found her calling writing chick lit and humorous women’s fiction. She secures much inspiration from her day job as a hardworking trademark paralegal and her still-single (but looking) status. Meredith is a loyal New York Yankees fan, an avid runner, and an unashamed television addict.

I have read all of Meredith Schorr's books in order, starting with "Just Friends With Benefits" and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. Her growth as a writer impresses me with each subsequent novel, and "Novelista Girl" does not disappoint. Her characters were first introduced to us in "Blogger Girl", Kimberly Long being the titular character. Although "Novelista Girl" was written as a standalone novel, and the reader does not need to have read "Blogger Girl" to fully comprehend the plot or background, it would be a shame to miss out on how each character has developed from one novel to the next. That being said, I absolutely loved "Novelista Girl". I have very little time to read, and was prepared to read a couple of chapters a night. But I ended reading it in one sitting because I just could not put it down. Every time I got to the end of a chapter I just had to keep reading to see what happens next. Kimberly is adorable and so real and relatable. Her life seems perfect, with her close knit family (even annoying little sis, Erin), her lifelong BFF Bridget and ex boyfriend and past go-to booty call, Jonathan, and of course her handsome, successful, and devoted live-in boyfriend Nicholas. She also has a day job as a legal secretary and a boss who is demanding but supportive, and a side job as a Chick-Lit blogger (hence "Blogger Girl"), making one wonder "what more could she possibly want"? But she does want more. The end of "Blogger Girl" found Kimberly taking Nicholas' advice and deciding to fulfill her dream and write a novel. "Novelista Girl" follows Kimberly's journey as she tries to have her novel published, with the unexpected help of high school nemesis and resident "Mean Girl" Hannah Marshak (whose character is an absolute hoot) who has become a published author herself, much to Kimberly's chagrin in "Blogger Girl", and now knows her way around the publishing world. Kimberly is also feeling neglected by Nicholas, who has become totally engrossed in his career as a lawyer, in an attempt, as we learn in "Novelista Girl" to prove to his father that he can be a success even if it is as a lawyer and not as a doctor like his father had wanted and expected of him. There is also the recent coupling of Bridget and Jonathan, which has Kimberly slightly off kilter, for as much as she wants her two closest friends to be happy, there is the uneasy feeling of jealousy that we can all relate to, even if we no longer want to be with an ex. Throw in the gnawing questions of whether Hannah is being sincere in her claims to be trying to help Kimberly or is it just an attempt to see Kimberly humiliated, as she did all through high school, and you have a story that just keeps entertaining from the first page to the last. The ending is terrific, although I highly recommend reading "Blogger Girl" first to fully appreciate it. Five champagne flutes to Meredith Schorr!! Congratulations on another successful novel. I can't wait for the next one!!

Kim is quickly realizing that her happily ever after from book 1 isn't going so well. She's written two novels, but can't get an agent to save her life. She's moving in with Nicholas, but he's turned distant and focused on his job. Horrible Hannah is getting another book published, and now Bridget isn't talking to her! Things are unraveling fast, and it's looking like HEA is not going to last.

One of the things I love about chick lit is that they tend to be quick and breezy, even when tearing out your feelings and disintegrating your cares of the outside world. Despite the reputation for being on the fluffy side of life, good chick lit often puts their plucky heroines through the literal wringer, and Novelista Girl is no exception.

It's cute and light, and while I was glad the author toned down all of the emphasis on Kim's, *ahem* assets, I found the pacing to be a little slow and uneven. There were gaps in time that weren't well laid out, leading me to realize that a month or two had gone by instead of days or weeks. This is a small critique, however, as I really enjoyed the rest of the story and am incredibly excited for book 3!

I finished Novelista Girl in less than 24 hours. Seriously could not put it down.

I love a good sequel and while Novelista Girl could easily be a stand-alone read, I think the characters are much more 3 dimensional after you've already gotten to know them a bit in Blogger Girl. I really enjoyed reading about their respective progressions and, much like real life, felt that I was witnessing the characters almost growing up with each chapter.

Kim Long is taking the next steps in her writing career and her relationship with Nicholas. She's finished her novel and is actively chasing her dream of becoming published. She's packed up her Lady Couch and moved in with Nicholas. She still has her day job to pay the bills and maintains her very successful chick-lit blog, Pastel is the New Black. She juggles all these roles and responsibilities seemingly with ease, much to Rob's delight and Daneen's chagrin, but underneath the veneer, Kim still wrestles with same insecurities as the rest of us. She's learning that with all the positive developments come some trade-offs: living with Nicholas means she gets a first row view of HIS insecurities, where they originate and how they effect their relationship. Working to publish her novel puts her in direct contact with Hannah more frequently than she'd like and forces her to relinquish some control of her beloved blog. More contact with Hannah puts her friendship with Bridget in jeopardy. Bridget's soul-searching over her own relationship with Jonathan also creates some unexpected tension in the friendship. Add all this to Nicholas' newly displayed consumption with achieving all his father's dreams and you have a road map of disaster. In Novelista Girl, we get to watch Kimmie navigate the choppier waters of life, celebrate her victories, mourn her rejections, and learn more about herself as she finds her way. She is imperfect, to be sure, and often you want to shake her, but at the same time, she is genuine and relatable.

Not sure what the future holds for Kimmie Long after Novelista Girl, but I'm hoping that Meredith Schorr will take us further into Kim's world or, maybe, into her past. I would love another novel giving us a better glimpse into Kim, Bridget, and Hannah in high school, where the drama started. Either way, whatever is next for Meredith Schorr, you can bet I will be reading it and loving it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved every minute of Novelista Girl! It is rare to find a chick lit book with characters quite as engaging as these!

5 fabulous stars! Kimberly Long is such a strong, loveable character and I was excited to follow her journey beyond Blogger Girl. After reading Novelista Girl, I can also say that I would be happy to keep reading about Kim and her 'A-squad' for as many books as the author will write about her! I loved every minute of Novelista Girl. I felt both the anticipation and the pangs of anguish as Kim attempts to land an agent for her book, "A Blogger's Life." I felt the emotional highs and lows of her relationship with Nicholas and her friendship with Bridget. I rolled my eyes at Hannah's emails and I just wanted to punch Daneen in the face most of the time! I also loved the underlying message of finding balance in your life. To sum up, it is quite rare to find a chick lit book with characters quite as engaging as these! For a reader to feel that they are actually experiencing the character's life as they read the pages, is the sign of a very talented author in my opinion. I know that there are limited spots in the 'big' publishing world for this type of novel, but I believe Meredith Schorr is deserving of one of these spots!
