4.6 out of 5 stars 760 ratings

A sexy “ice queen” lawyer falls in love with the police officer trying to save her from a stalker in this lesbian age gap romance

For years, ambitious Deputy District Attorney Kade Matheson has taken case files and law books, not lovers, to bed, ignoring her personal life in favor of her career. When she finds herself with a stalker, she tries to handle the situation the way she always does: on her own.

Lieutenant Del Vasquez has admired the standoffish lawyer for a while, and she’s determined to protect her at all costs.

When Kade’s stalker situation escalates and she and Del have to hide at her mother’s, Kade is finally forced to face her attraction to women for the very first time.

Suddenly, she’s no longer sure which one is more dangerous—the threat to her life or to her heart?

The characters in this Book 2 of the Portland Police Bureau series are well developed as they presented a journey filled with love, angst, family, and surprises. I thoroughly enjoy the writing style of Jae and am looking forward to the third book in the series. All of Jae’s works are well written and full of twists and turns that keep you riveted to the story that’s unfolding. I heartily recommend any of Jae’s works. Thank you. Peace

Love this continued story of Aiden/Dawn. Very well written book. I really liked both of these ladies and then the story of Del/Kade made it even better. All of the main characters had things in their past (and present) to overcome before they could commit to love and a relationship. With this book being longer than the usual les/fic, there was time to explore their growing relationships. Jae absolutely brings the story to life and you are right there with all the drama and the love. So much enjoy any thing written by this author. I was sad to see this story end (although there is a very short 3rd installment) as I had come to really care about all 4 of the main characters. Thank you, Jae, for another "written from the heart" book. You are an amazing writer!!!!!!!

I’ve been reading Jae for quite a while now, and what surprises me the most is that although I believe she writes good lesbian fiction, I only like two of her series. It always amazes me how an author can write in so many different ways; it all depends on what they’re writing about.

I really enjoyed both books from Jae’s Portland Police Series. There are only minor issues I have with the series, things like giving Del and Kade more book time, and more sex scenes that type of thing.

Overall, the series itself is really good if you like crime based series mixed with romance. Another reason I like this series is because for some reason, Jae develops her characters better here. They seem fleshed out and can easily stand alone; each character in this series is distinctive. In contrast, in her werewolf series the characters are just odd; I didn’t like the majority of them. Also, the same could be said about the characters in her Hollywood series. Those characters were superficial and just cold. I guess if those characters were cold and superficial she captured the true essence of Hollywood! One could say she succeeded!

Del was hands down my favorite character in this book. She was down to earth, honest, sexy, smart, and even though she stumbled a bit in the beginning while first pursuing Kade, she is such a redeemable character. This is a character if real, I would be friends with.

All I have are good things to say about this series, I hope that little short story Jae released is not all we’re going to hear from these characters, I loved this!

As a continuation of a Conflict of Interest, this book is by far a great story. It continues the story of Aiden & Dawn while providing several other stories. We find Lieutenant Delicia Vasquez once again. Big picture is her sights on Kade Matthison and her insistence towards getting to knowledge the DDA..

I’m not one that really likes multiple view points in a book. 2 is really my max. Having 4 (there was 5 at one point) was strange, but absolutely amazing! There was so much going on in this book. We get the reveal of Evan, who has a unique connection to Adien. Adien takes on some sisterly roles for Evan. Evan finds her own romance with Kade’s niece. Adien and dawn take 2 huge leaps forward in their relationship! Kade learns to trust other people. Kade also decides to end up with who she wants, not who her family or society expects her to. Del shows Kade what it’s like to just be yourself. And finally Kade and Del enter a relationship with no barriers. Truthfully a 5 star book, and I wish Jae would write a third! Maybe one featuring Evan and Laurie when they’re older, with special appearances from Dawn, Adien, Del, and Kade!

"Next of Kin" is a smart, multi-layered book! With the continued relationship of Adien and Dawn and the budding new romance between Kade and Del there is plenty of romance to go around. Throw in a suspenseful case that affects one of their own, and you have a solid foundation for an outstanding piece of literary work.

However, despite all of the novels strong attributes, in my opinion there are some flaws; the realistic chain of events surrounding Adien and her newly found sister had me puzzled. I have always liked the fact that Adien became who she is due to her past, (being the product of rape). Yet, the chances of her meeting a sibling born in the same violent and heinous way, was simply too much to wrap my head around.

As I said before, this book was successful due to the fact it was multi-layered; romance and mystery. However, the "mystery" part of the book fell short. It was my opinion the author spent too much time on the relationships between the leading ladies and not enough time on the mystery section itself. There was hardly any build up to a suspenseful climax. An equal part of each is needed to form a concrete plot.

In all, I would recommend the book to anyone who has read, "Conflict of Interest," the first book in the series. "Next of Kin" is a good read, and one I plan on coming back to again.

I haven't read many books my Jae. But, I am becoming a fan fast. I read number one in the series and was suitable impressed. What I enjoyed most about the second was she didn't forget the characters from the first book. Instead she expanded the story and you get to know the characters more intimately. Although you could read this as a stand-alone novel, it does make better reading and sense if you read the first one. An excellent book, an awesome storyline. Now I need to read number three. Have fun with this read you won't be disappointed.

It took me only 2 days to read the whole book. It was my holiday treat and thanks to the great book, my fear of flying was almost forgotten on my long flight.
In this book Jae focuses on Del and Kade. Their relationship only started (well, kind of) in the first book and she describes wonderful how their relationship develops. A couple of times I had to smile because it reminded me of a situation I'm in at the moment.
There are also news on Aiden and Dawn. For Aiden the book holds some family news and also for their relationship is a big change to come...
