Necromancer Awakening: Book One of The Mukhtaar Chronicles Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 414 ratings

Readers have hailed it as "Percy Jackson meets Game of Thrones!"

The New Adult Fantasy Bestseller that reached #1 in the UK and #3 in the United States.

"Knowledge in the absence of wisdom is a dangerous thing."

Texas archaeology student Nicolas Murray has an ironic fear of the dead. A latent power connecting him to an ancient order of Necromancers floods his mind with impossible images of battle among hive-mind predators and philosopher fishmen. When a funeral service leaves him shaken and questioning his sanity, the insidious power strands him in a land where the sky kills and earthquakes level cities. A land where the undead serve the living, and Necromancers summon warriors from ancient graves to fight in a war that spans life and afterlife.

If Nicolas masters the Three Laws of Necromancy, he can use them to get home. But as he learns to raise and purify the dead--a process that makes him relive entire lifetimes in the span of a moment--the very power that could bring him home may also prevent his return. For the supreme religious leader, the Archmage Kagan, has outlawed Necromancy, and its practitioners risk torture and execution.

As warring nations hunt Necromancers to extinction, countless dead in limbo await a purification that may never come.

Nicolas's power could be his way home...

Or it could save a world that wants him dead.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Mind-blowingly good." - Nicholas Rossis, #1 Bestselling Author of the epic fantasy series Pearseus.
"Best book I've read this year. Nat Russo could turn into my favorite author." - Phillip Ferriera, Owner of ReviewBoard.Com
"Necromancer Awakening by Nat Russo is one of the finest examples of fantasy genre fiction I have ever seen. I started to say, "seen in a long time," but the qualifier isn't applicable, since Russo is well able to hold his own among such lights as Martin, Gaiman and Gabaldon." - C. L. Roman, Editor, Brass Rag Press

From the Author

I hope you enjoy this 2nd Edition of Necromancer Awakening. When I was getting ready to publish Necromancer Falling, I discovered an amazing fantasy artist named Atanas Stoykov. Atanas created such amazing artwork that I just had to ask him to re-imagine the cover for Necromancer Awakening. He didn't disappoint, as I'm sure you'll agree.
Not only is this print edition in the larger, and more popular, 6" x 9" format, it also includes, as a bonus, the entirety of
The Road to Dar Rodon. TRtDR is a prequel novelette that takes place some 40 years prior to the events of Necromancer Awakening, and it features Mujahid Lord Mukhtaar as the main character...at a not-so-pleasant moment in his life.
Thank you all so much for the kind words you've shared with me about the Erindor universe. I'm so happy you've come to love it as much as I have. Maybe someday we can all hoist a pint at the Pinnacle.
Cheers,Nat

Necromancer Awakening is an interesting and original fantasy novel with a very different kind of magic that also makes some profound reflections on topics such as faith, redemption, priesthood, and the relationship between life and death. Nicolas, an archaeology student in Texas, is plagued by horrifying visions whenever he's in the presence of death - and especially in the wake of his adoptive father's funeral. The visions lead to him being swept from Texas to another world, where he discovers the reasons for his visions - he's a necromancer, a wizard-priest who uses the power of death to purify the dead.

In this world, the power of death is good and useful, used to benefit those who have died, while it's life magic, which comes from a horrifying source, that is evil. It's an interesting turnaround on expectations, and Nicolas himself has trouble coming to terms with his unexpected talent and what it means. We follow Nicolas through his training, first with a banished but very powerful human necromancer and then in a civilization of strange creatures who have to learn to accept him for who he is even as he has to learn to accept them - and himself for who he is. The danger of "wizard in training" novels is that it's too easy for them to be boring, with this lecture and that lecture and this test and that test, but Necromancer Awakening skips the boring parts and focuses on the highly unusual aspects of this magic and on Nicolas's personal journey to acceptance of his calling and his destiny. There's also plenty of action, fights and adventures and discovering all the strange and different aspects of this world.

Eventually, in his quest to find his way home again to his beagle Toby and fiancee Kaitlin (who might have a greater role to play than just being the love interest left behind), Nicolas has to restore the balance in this world in which necromancy is banned and life magic has nearly destroyed all life. His growth through the book is impressive, and he becomes a true hero.

Well-written, with engaging characters and a highly orginal world and magic system. I'm looking forward to the release of the next book in the series, to find out what happens next!

This story is a classic example of an "ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances", and in a world where people (both human and non-human) can raise the dead right out of the ground, it doesn't get much more extraordinary than that.

The story plunges headlong into precarious situations, prickly personalities, and plenty of politics from the very beginning, and only slows down long enough to introduce the protagonist, Nicholas, to a well-written population of alien beings who help him acquire the skills he needs to survive the rest of the story. Although he starts out as a bit of a wise-cracking jerk, his abrasive and headstrong personality helps him stand up to the many challenges and challengers he meets on his journey.

His partner, Mujahid, is a strong, similarly likably annoying man with seemingly the weight of the multiverses upon his shoulders. His and Nicholas's antagonistic and defensive personalities play off each other well most of the time, and during the time he and Nicholas are separated, Mujahid is off on his own quest for the truth about what's going on, and carrying enough hinted-at back story to fill two books. When he and Nicholas meet up for the climax, the results are nothing short of world-shattering. The author's gaming background peeks through in the original and intriguing description and use of the characters' supernatural powers and magical abilities, and they are wielded with often breathtaking results.

The only quibble I had with the story is that it is so big and fast-paced that I was sometimes lost in the details. I actually read the whole thing a second time and was better able to keep story lines, character relationships, and motivations straight as well as pick up on some foreshadowing I had missed the first time around. In the end, it was worth it.

Easily a stand-alone story on its own, it also leaves an opening for a sequel; one in which I hope to see enough slow-down in the story-telling to invite a more in-depth look into the lives of all of the characters involved.

I loved book one, can't wait for book two. I was forced by life events to put this down a few times, but it was difficult to do, stayed up 'til 1am to finish it up.

i read some of the less positive reviews, though not negative reviews, prior to reading the book. I found most of the complaints to be based on personal preferences. For example, feeling rushed, or you don't learn more about the characters. It really comes down to what you want out of the story. Do you want Twilight, Ulysses, or WOT, or do you want Endors Game - its more like the later in pace and depth - i.e. you will not spend a whole chapter about the main character worrying about what people think of him.

OK, how about more of a review about the book.....Why do I love the book? Well, the pace was good, didn't get bogged down, but gave you all the story, people and location information to make the book enjoyable. I also felt like the magic system was well thought out and balanced. Magic is tricky to write too because everything is a cause and effect.

The main characters are different, enjoyable, believable, and a fun read. The common pitfalls of story writing seem to have been missed.

This is a great read, maybe a little short compared to many books coming out, but I didn't feel like I missed anything either.

I love that Amazon provides a outlet for gifted writers to publish their works.

Amazing read! I bought this as I follow the author on Twitter and was interested as well as trying to be supportive of his first book. I wouldn't have probably considered it otherwise as it is not a genre that I thought would appeal to me. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it but boy was I wrong! It is well written, cleverly plotted and drew me into a world I could have never imagined, making me want to keep reading to find out more. The central character is so believable and you really begin to care about him. It becomes easy due to the fabulous writing to imagine the strange world and situation the young man finds himself in and want to know how he will survive and how it will all end. Well recommended! Someone said that it was like a great film script waiting to happen... I can well believe it! Keep an eye on this one!

I enjoyed Necromancer Awakening. Nat Russo's page turner transports us from modern America to the fantasy world of Erindor where gods and magic rule. The Arch-Mage has outlawed Necromancy, but it is far from the dark art I was expecting. The protagonist's journey unfolds a unique magic system where Necromancers indenture the dead to repent acts of evil, helping lost souls find peace. I look forward to its sequel.
