- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2023I love short stories and this collection of cyberpunk horror stories bt Tanweer Dar did not disappoint.
Cyber vampires, lab experiments gone horribly wrong, machines out of control and a "smart" apartment terrorizing its owner. That and more can be found in this short but highly entertaining book.
I particularly liked the story of the club owner killing his patrons by having them dance to death...gives the term "clubbed to death" a whole new meaning!
Every story is different and not only displays the author's talent for short fiction but also how diverse a blend of cyberpunk and horror can be.
Definitely worth a read if you like cyberpunk, horror and short fiction!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2020In the blurb for this book, there’s the phrase: “What could possibly go wrong?” Well, lots of things. This book tells stories of what could go wrong with technology. It gives us fuel for the nightmare of rats that become resistant to a virus engineered to wipe them out. And the nightmare of a robotic pet dog that isn’t cuddly. And the nightmare in Neon Dreams, a nightclub where you’re supposed to dance the night away — not dance to your death. These are just a few of the 13 stories in this book. When someone says a smart apartment would be so convenient, that you could tell the system to dim the lights, change the music, change the temperature, etc. Yes, that would be convenient. But Tanweer Dar is here to tell us those conveniences have dark sides, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2020This is a delightfully scary collection of short stories that combines elements of horror and science fiction, specifically of the cyber-punk variety. These tales take place at night, often in a dirty, gritty urban environment. Fragments/hues of neon lights give the stories a Blade Runner feel at times. In this collection, you’ll find tales of evil robots and biomechanical horrors. Let’s not forget the vampires and other supernatural elements. This was a perfect book to enjoy in the months leading up to Halloween, a time when I’m eager to leave behind the scorching heat of a Florida summer. Fans of sci-fi and horror will definitely enjoy this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020Take every nightmare you've ever had and multiply by 100. That is what Tanweer Far has brought is in these short stories. They will keep you up at night for sure wondering, what was that sound.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020Just in time for Halloween or even the impending Armageddon, Tanweer Dar delivers a chilling novella of twelve well-executed short stories. Neon Nightmares ranges from chemical contagions to sadistic machines to The Hive, and everywhere scary in between, giving the reader a smorgasbord of terrifying treats. The stories grab you immediately and skillfully push you, with teeth clenched and heart racing, until the bitter end. The perfect read for a dark and stormy night. I would recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020In the style of Black Mirror episodes, Dar puts together a collection of dark short stories about technology, creatures, and a few others sure to shock you. I've loved everything by him so far and plan to check out his future ideas.
I just got finished with "The Man With No Name". Loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020The stories in this collection are so unique and haunting. My favorites are Reptilian, Biohazard, Infestation, and Trance. They really do play out like nightmares that your mind has hope of controlling, but then can't. I truly enjoyed the vivid imagery, the suspense, and the terrifying outcomes. This book has definitely made me a fan of short horror stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2021A well-done collection of cross-genre stories that have been perfect for my recent, short pre-bedtime attention span. Not for the squeamish or those looking for every tale to have a happy ending—refreshingly real grit here!
My favorite stories:
“Trance”
“Bionic”
“Wetware”
“Shadow”

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-fi with a touch of horror
Stories that will leave you with a chill after reading!
As a reader, good for those who enjoy 20th century sci-fi short story anthologies (which I do!). In terms of TV, comparisons with Black Mirror are apt. Sci-fi with a dark side.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nightmares indeed.
I really liked how the author kept tight with the theme and the settings. One city in some kind of dystopian future. I liked the one word story titles and I liked most of the stories. Nice, tight, simple writing. The overall effect was to make this world seem like a very scary, dangerous place.
I especially liked Reptilian and Virtual; the latter which although quite predictable was still brutally abrupt. My favourite was Canoid. The ending took my breath away. Had all the stories in this excellent little anthology hit me in the same way Canoid did, I would have given Neon Nightmares five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Future Horrorscape
From the moment I dove into the book, I was gobsmacked. This is the absolute perfect blend of The Twilight Zone and cyberpunk with the endings leaning more toward the horror spectrum. This is not your hologram girlfriends and robotic servants, this is visceral nightmares steeped deeply in reality and the human consciousness. Stories range in length and style. Great for a quick read. Perfect for cleansing the palate when you need a break from a longer work (I like to read multiple works at once myself).

4.0 out of 5 stars The hardest game of Shadowrun you've never played
This book is like a Dragon, at first all claws and teeth but then you glimpse a softer underbelly.
Stories seem to combine to paint a near future dystopian city.
Some of the tales would be better had they been expanded into something longer (in particular 'Glitch', 'Trance' and 'Infestation' could all be adapted into worth reading Novels I think) but better to leave the reader wanting more, than less I guess.
I think a lot of this book will stick with me but I've given it 4 stars rather than 5 because I'm not quite satisfied. I was never scared or surprised as much as I wanted to be and I was often left wanting more information, detail, background. Obviously that latter point is hard with short stories but a great short story should offer something more, something different than a Novel the Author couldn't be bothered to write.
Still if you like Sci-fi Horror, this is worth a look.
