The New Neighbor: A Thriller Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 359 ratings

USA Today bestselling author Carter Wilson returns with a chilling psychological thriller about Bury, NH, a standalone story with crossover to his previous novel The Dead Husband. A must for readers of Megan Miranda and Alex Michaelides.

Aidan holds the winning Powerball numbers.

Is today the best day of his life... or the worst?

Aidan Marlowe is the superstitious type—he's been playing the same lottery numbers for fifteen years, never hitting the jackpot. Until now. On the day of his wife's funeral.

Aidan struggles to cope with these two sudden extremes: instant wealth beyond his imagination, and the loss of the only woman he's ever loved, the mother of his twin children. But the money gives him and his kids options they didn't have before. They can leave everything behind. They can start a new life in a new town. So they do.

But a huge new house and all the money in the world can't replace what they've lost, and it's not long before Aidan realizes he's merely trading old demons for new ones. Because someone is watching him and his family very closely. Someone who knows exactly who they are, where they've come from, and what they're trying to hide. Someone who will stop at nothing to get what they want...

"The New Neighbor is a dizzying descent into a Byzantine maze of psychological suspense. Carter Wilson proves once again why he is one of the best most inventive thriller writers working today." ― S. A. Cosby, New York Times bestselling author of Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland

"Damn you. Wilson, I was up all night with this book. The mysteries of Bury are perfectly placed, the tension is thick enough to drown in, and the pages fly by. Brilliant escapism. I can't recommend it highly enough." ―Stuart Turton, internationally bestselling author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and The Devil and the Dark Water

"A truly suspenseful and gripping read. I was filled with anxiety and on the edge of my seat throughout. Bravo!" —Alice Hunter, author of The Serial Killer's Wife
"This is one heck of a thriller, and Marlowe's voice is incredible and compelling. The story is creepy yet tender, shocking and hugely emotional. I absolutely loved this book, and am about to make my way through Carter Wilson's entire backlist. Mr. Wilson, you have a new fan!" — Hannah Mary McKinnon, internationally bestselling author of Never Coming Home.

"Some truly frightening scenes lead to a gripping and satisfying conclusion, but not before a twist that will leave readers' heads spinning. Marlowe is memorable ―single dads in thrillers aren't that common―but mainly he will stay with readers because of his offbeat vulnerability and the determination that shines through his grief. Wilson's (The Dead Girl in 2A) unusual psychological thriller is one for fans of Stephen King who are open to reading mysteries." ― First Clue

"Fast-paced, beautifully written and with the requisite heart-pounding moments, Carter Wilson's The New Neighbor hits all the right thriller notes. Add this to your to-read pile immediately!" —Catherine McKenzie, USA Today bestselling author of You Can't Catch Me and Six Weeks to Live

"I can never resist a book with a well-written, unreliable narrator, and Carter Wilson nails just that in his tautly written thriller, The New Neighbor. I couldn't bear to put this page-turner down until I figured out every single detail in Wilson's suspenseful and twist-ridden story of loss, mourning, and new starts that asks if money can ever buy happiness and even if it does―at what cost?" ― Emily Bleeker, Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author

Another Brilliant Psych Thriller from Carter Wilson!

Another Brilliant Psych Thriller from Carter Wilson!
Carter Wilson's The New Neighbor is a brilliant psychological thriller with themes of grief, bereavement, guilt, child/sibling loss, spousal loss, and self harm - that's a whole lot of pain; which somehow, winning the lottery the very day he buried his wife doesn't quite change his life balance for the better...at least not in the new neighborhood, with its intrinsically dark creepiness.. The suspense is tense, and beautifully, tightly, woven. Carter Wilson's protagonist, Aiden Marlow, is an Irish expat, and his narration is, on many levels, a hat's off to the great Irish poets. Wilson's writing reminds me of Stephen King's most poetic works, such as 11/22/63, Duma Key, and Bag of Bones. I highlighted several passages, and many individual sentences (occasionally, merely two words), simply because they are so beautifully poetic. Underneath it all, there is love, and it is a love which sustains Aiden Marlow, in the midst of his psychological unraveling - love for his wife Holly, whom he lost to a freak aneurism, love for his children, his father, and his deceased brother. Aiden's father, Da, knows grief and loss, and provides a profoundly, heartbreakingly, accurate statement on what it means to lose a child. He is right on the mark. This is not merely a story of thrills and chills, though there are indeed plenty; it is a story of a simple man thrust into the vortex of best of times and the worst of times - all at the same time. Carter Wilson artfully draws a picture of a man who is nearly destroyed, whilst being threatened by a looming dark force. He must find a way to to survive and rebuild a life for himself, and his children, before descending into complete madness. My highest recommendation for superb literary writing and engaging suspenseful plot,

I bought this book when I caught it on sale and started reading it yesterday. Suffice it to say, I didn't stop till it did. (I even read ahead into the preview of the next book.)

It's one of the truly spectacular reads I've ever had.

    Loved it.

I especially love that it's written in very short chapters, so there's almost always a cliffhanger every few pages. And the cliffhangers are amazing.

There's a lot to say about this book, but I'll just say it's about a man whose best and worst wishes come true on the same day: He buries his wife, who died suddenly and unexpectedly, and then learns he's won a Powerball lottery, bringing him millions of dollars he never expected or earned.

Dealing with that is about as much as one person can handle, and in trying to keep his family together and being drawn to a new place with a huge new house he can now afford, Aidan Marlowe puts himself into the most dangerous position of his life. You learn about yourself and how much you can handle when you start all over again, and Aidan does. And the journey he takes--and the one we take with him--is truly worth the ride.

I can only say--read it. Or if that's too much to ask--read the first 5 pages. I'm betting you'll keep going, because I don't see how anyone can stop.

A great, great read--my favorite, I think, since GHOSTED, which is equally unputdownable. And worth reading again, in the not-too-distant future, to marvel at the writer's tricks and pick up on hints he left for us. Thanks, Mr. Wilson. Well done.

Aiden Marlowe is grieving his wife Holly who collapsed and died immediately when an unsuspected aneurysm burst, leaving him to raise their seven year old twins. As he is going to the funeral, his phone beeps with a notification and when he looks he realizes that he has won the lottery, thirty million dollars.

Feeling that his family needs to start over, Aiden moves them from Baltimore to a small coastal town an hour or so outside of Boston. The house is a mansion but as soon as he walks into it with his children, they all feel the same thing; the house has a haunted feel. Aiden discovers that the last owner disappeared from the house along with his two daughters and his grandson, never to be heard from again. Knowing he will need help with the children and hoping for something better, he arranges for his father to come over from Ireland to help with the kids and live with them.

But the new house isn't the panacea Aidan had hoped for. He starts to receive notes, anonymous ones saying they were watching him. Each note gets more threatening and soon there are demands for money. Aiden goes to the police but there is little they can do. He hires security but it doesn't seem to ever catch those involved. After his daughter is trapped in the basement during a party Aiden throws, he knows he must do something. Can he discover who is targeting his family?

Carter Wilson is known for writing in the thriller genre. Some of his works have been optioned for tv and movies and he has won numerous awards. In this novel, he lays bare the fears each of us have, that someone could target those we love and we will be helpless to stop them. I listened to this book and the narrator did a great job portraying Aiden's grief, fear and resolution to find those threatening his family. This book is recommended for mystery readers.

This book had a really slow start, but once it started picking up, it really picked up. The end is kind of a let down as well, not super obvious but obvious enough if you have read mysteries for a while.

This thriller made me anxious. Like I was waiting to step on a nail.

Marlowe finds out he won the lottery - 30 million dollars - the day of his wife’s funeral. She died in front of her twin 7-year-old kids from a brain aneurysm.
Marlowe abruptly moves from Baltimore to a small affluent town in Bury NH with his kids.
It’s a house haunted by memories and ghosts of the family who disappeared one day long ago from that property. Gone without a trace.
Marlowe starts to lose his mind. Losing chunks of time. Not remembering doing things and drinking a lot of alcohol.
He starts receiving anonymous notes left on his property. Threatening notes promising bad things if he doesn’t pay. But he mustn’t leave. Ever!
    Signed We Who Watch.

The book is unsettling and nerve-racking. The suspense did build with each left note, but I was tired of his drinking, it was constant. I felt like I was being clubbed over the head with it.

The conclusion was frightening, but I didn’t quite believe the motivation behind the threats. It felt a little unbalanced.

All in all a disturbing situation with a claustrophobic feel kept me wanting to read to the end.

If you like locked room mystery novels this might be for you.

The book is fast moving and keeps you keenly interested and then as at least one other review states the ending is a disappointment and to me not believable.

The book started well but quickly went down hill. It was slow with too much filler between the so called "shocking" reveals. There are three stories not weaved together very well so it felt choppy in many places. I figured out who the letter writers were about half way through. I finished the book but was left feeling disappointed over all.
