- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2025I wish I'd read this book sooner!
From the very beginning of my author journey, I've struggled with my newsletters. What do I write about? How do I provide incentive for readers to join my newsletter list? Who are my ideal subscribers? Not knowing what to do has led me to procrastinate newsletters, offer weak "cookies", and accidentally neglect subscribers. I definitely haven't been using newsletters to their full potential.
This book is such a handy guide to indie authors seeking to avoid my mistakes! Talking about everything from building an ideal subscriber "avatar", creating onboarding email sequences, the difference between organic and non-organic subscribers (and how best to attract and handle each type), newsletter magnets/"cookies", and best practices for sending truly worthwhile emails, this book has me looking forward to sending newsletters for perhaps the first time in my journey.
Labrecque writes with a very casual, friendly voice, and although her occasional flippancy and usage of (mild) language threw me off, I did appreciate how authentic and honest she teaches. I enjoyed reading the book, even as I was learning a LOT. This is definitely a book I'll be rereading every so often to brush back up on my newsletter skills. I'm also looking forward to reading the sequel.
Overall, a non-exhaustive but solid guide to indie authors seeking to demystify the newsletter process. I highly recommend giving it a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025I wasn't sure how I'd like this book, but I decided to give it a try and got the Kindle version for my daily commute.
It turned out to be a good read. There's a lot of info packed inside, and I'll have to go through it again while actually implementing the suggestions she makes.
What I intend to do on my second read-through is take each chapter's suggestions and work through them, not moving on until I've done all she's instructed for that chapter.
One of the things that helped me keep reading this book is Tammi's humor. Her ability to make me giggle while listening to what normally would be boring tech speak about email providers, automations, onboarding, re-engagement... well, that definitely helped.
I intend to get the next book about "cookies," and I expect to be as entertained as I am informed.
But something tells me I'll be utilizing the free course she provides just because I'm both an audio and a visual learner. So her course should really help cement in my mind the things she recommends. (But if I could afford her one-on-one coaching, I'd probably go that route.)
Since she's a romance novelist (like me), I feel confident that her suggestions will work for my email list. But if you don't write romance, don't worry. Tammi's information spans all genres, and she even gives tips for sci-fi, horror, or fantasy writers.
Bottom line, if you're a writer who wants to start a newsletter list or build one you already have, this is a good book for you to start with. Implement her strategies from the ground up or use it to refine your already-in-motion list. Either way, you can only benefit from this book.
See you after the next one. 😉 👋
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023I suspect that I might benefit more from the next book in the series or taking the actual course. That said, it's not because the information presented isn't valuable, timely, or something that any author (traditional or self-published) shouldn't keep in mind to optimize and grow their newsletter. It's just that at a high level, most things in play are established best practices.
That said, there are some actionable tips and tricks as well as specifics that really help to reinforce the concepts and provide clarity. And they're delivered in a conversational and approachable tone that I wish more of the nonfiction/how-to books I read adopted. It's like sitting down with a trusted friend to learn about something they know.
I don't regret the purchase at all. In fact, on the Kindle "What's Next" screen, I picked up the next book the moment I finished this one. If you're new to newsletters (or have one but don't understand why it isn't working), this book is a great place to start figuring out your foundation and creating a plan that should lead to success. If you're looking to min-max an already-successful newsletter, maybe not so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2025This book brought it all together in a concise and straightforward way with practical tips.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025As a new indie author without a robust email list (yet), I read through Newsletter Ninja like it was the most compelling novel ever written! In it I found validation rom my previous research about newsletters, but I’d missed a few steps, tips and tricks. I already put multiple points of Tammi’s advice into practice before I even finished the book.
And, I will absolutely, without a doubt gobble up the cookie (probably equivalent to a double chocolate chip) she’s offering next, Newsletter Ninja 2! I can’t wait to see what’s next from her and the results of following her suggestions.
Truly a must read for new authors!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025I've been an indie author since 2018 w my third novel about to go on pre-order. Email growth has been my most difficult challenge. Tammie gave me direction and confidence. I also liked her no-nonsense style. About to buy Ninja 2!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2024Before finding Tammi Labrecque’s book, I had been looking for a book that thoroughly explained how mailing lists work. Her book, Newsletter Ninja, gives a straightforward path about how to collect and organize your mailing list with super fans who are eager to receive your newsletter content. I’ve seen several other books which touch on this topic, but I tended to have lots of questions. Now, after reading this book, I feel I finally have answers to my questions. I highly recommend this book for people who need to explore this topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, funny and informative!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Often, with instructional text, I become easily distracted and only manage to get halfway through or skip steps (skim read). With Newsletter Ninja, I was highly entertained, and Tammi kept me with her throughout.
