A BROKEN SOUL, AND AN AVENGING FURY... Danny Kasabian is under deep cover in a Los Angeles gang. A young cop lifted straight out of training, he's played a key role in the operation to penetrate their criminal network in cities across America. He's risked his life on a daily basis. And his cover's just been blown. Surviving a botched execution and a near-death experience, Danny must now try to pick up his old life after six years away. Six years of absence, of secrecy, of missed moments and misunderstandings. Six years with no word to Beth Franklin, whom he left with no excuse or explanation. Inevitably, life back home has moved on. And it's moved on without him. Then there are the gang members he betrayed, the ones who met their deaths because of him. Treachery was a part of the job but these were people he'd been close to. They put faith in him, they let him in. Lawbreakers all, but they gave him their trust. And then there's Rhianna. Rhianna Madisson is a low-level member of the gang. An Invisible Girl, useful for spying and subterfuge. Her lover Nico is gone and the traitor Danny is responsible. He may have made it home. But if Rhianna has her way, he won't be home safe. Danny thinks often of those he betrayed. Rhianna is haunted by the sense that in failing to kill Danny she was betraying her Nico. "But I'm glad the cop survived," she says. "I thought him dying would fix it for me, but it didn't. I need more." If it's not enough to take someone's life, you go after what they love. A compelling story of guilt, obsession and deception from one of our finest writers of dark suspense.

Beginning his TV career with the BBC's DOCTOR WHO, Stephen Gallagher went on to establish himself as a writer and director of high-end miniseries and primetime episodic television. In his native England he's adapted and created hour-long and feature-length thrillers and crime dramas. In the US he was lead writer on NBC's CRUSOE, creator of CBS Television's ELEVENTH HOUR, and Co-Executive Producer on ABC's THE FORGOTTEN. His fourteen novels include DOWN RIVER, RAIN, VALLEY OF LIGHTS, and NIGHTMARE, WITH ANGEL. He's the creator of Sebastian Becker, Special Investigator to the Lord Chancellor's Visitor in Lunacy, in a series of novels beginning with THE KINGDOM OF BONES and THE BEDLAM DETECTIVE, continuing in THE AUTHENTIC WILLIAM JAMES.

Described by The Independent as "the finest British writer of bestselling popular fiction since le Carré ... Gallagher, like le Carré, is a novelist whose themes seem to reflect something of the essence of our times, and a novelist whose skill lies in embedding those themes in accessible plots." According to Arena magazine, "Gallagher has quietly become Britain's finest popular novelist, working a dark seam between horror and the psychological thriller.

The Daily Telegraph wrote, "Since Valley of Lights, he has been refining his own brand of psycho-thriller, with a discomforting knack of charting mental disintegration and a razor-sharp sense of place." Charles de Lint wrote in Mystery Scene magazine, "Gallagher is a master of abnormal psychology and he just gets better and better." Also in Mystery Scene David Mathew added, "never a writer to rest on his laurels, he has written good hard thrillers, some horror genre work (such as Valley of Lights), and a novel (Oktober) that might even qualify as a vague distortion of contemporary world fantasy... in places. You might go as far as to employ that overused phrase sui generis. He is, at any rate, one of the best writers of his generation."

Winner of British Fantasy and International Horror Guild awards.

Stephen Gallagher’s The Next Thing You See When You Die delivers an adrenaline-fueled ride filled with action, betrayal, and moral complexity. From the first page, Gallagher plunges readers into a gritty, high-stakes narrative where survival depends on deception and quick thinking.

The story follows an undercover cop infiltrating a dangerous gang, navigating a treacherous web of lies while fighting to maintain his cover—and his life. Gallagher’s ability to depict the tension of living a double life is masterful, immersing readers in the protagonist’s constant tightrope walk between loyalty and survival.

What sets this book apart is its vivid portrayal of another world—the criminal underbelly that feels both alien and eerily familiar. Gallagher’s writing is sharp, atmospheric, and relentless, making each twist and turn feel both inevitable and shocking. The pacing is impeccable, ensuring there’s never a dull moment while still allowing room for character development and emotional resonance.

Action-packed and deeply engaging, The Next Thing You See When You Die is a gripping exploration of trust, identity, and the cost of survival. Fans of crime thrillers and undercover dramas will find this a compelling and unputdownable read.
