About the author

Mathew Gostelow is a dad, husband, and author, living in Birmingham, UK.
His CV is a chaotic patchwork quilt of journalism, pheasant farming, catering, and marketing. His taste in art, music, film, and literature is equally eclectic, although he tends to gravitate towards anything with a creepy, dreamy aesthetic.
If you catch Mat staring intently into the middle distance, odds are he will either be thinking about Twin Peaks or cooked breakfasts. Some mornings he wakes early and writes strange tales.
Mat has published two collections: a book of speculative short stories called See My Breath Dance Ghostly (Alien Buddha Press) and Connections, a flash fiction chapbook (Naked Cat Publishing - now defunct). He has been longlisted for the Welkin Prize, and nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net, and Best Microfiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where uncanny meets the everyday in a wholly breathtaking way
I'm on my second reading of this mesmerising collection, and you will read it more than once, because it demands it. Gostelow has taken the uncanny, the strange and the downright creepy and intercalated them into "normal" worlds. This is VERY hard to do with such seamless effect. It leaves the reader discombobulated, disturbed and deliciously hungry for more.
The stories get under your skin, where they itch and prickle. They mess with your mind - in the best possible way. There is humour, there is horror - albeit the quiet kind, the kind that slinks around you and doesn't need to rely on gore and jump-scares - there is heart. Human beings in torment, families, love.
Every voice in these stories is unique and vividly rendered. You will be amused and grossed out along with Gwen in Stranger Than Shitty Sheets and Rubber Ding-Dongs. You will relate to the incomparable sadness of Danny-Boy in Seas of Static Between Stations, which will not just pull at your heartstrings, but snap a couple. You will experience the disconcerting horror of a man trying to please his child by buying a finch. You will scream into the void and root for undead kittens and wish you'd listened to the dog-faced boy.
You will, I promise you.
Grab yourself a copy of See My Breath Dance Ghostly and read it in one sitting, then take some time, some much needed time to recover, before reading it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Startling Collection of Very Short Stories
Having previously read Mathew’s very short stories, I expected to be shocked but I was surprised to find how moving so many of these stories are. In particular, I have found myself thinking about ‘For A While There, We Were Weightless,’ on a number of occasions since I first read it in July. I would also recommend ‘The Zebra Finch.’ Excellent writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Creepy, uncanny and absolutely excellent
This flash fiction collection is creepy, uncanny and absolutely excellent. Nothing is quite as it seems, everything needs to be looked at twice and there are some quite stunning examples of how writing in an unexpected manner can elevate a story from good to brilliant.
I enjoyed all fourteen of these tiny tales but Whiskertense And Bristlefur Electric, We Prowl and Seas of Static Between Stations are my standout favourites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly, startlingly original - Gostelow's voice is masterful.
Gostelow writes with an assured and original voice; I discerned subtle nuances of the linguistic brilliance of Shakespeare Eliot, Lear, Orwell and others in this collection, but always with a unique, modern, and often dark and original twist that transcends anything those earlier men of letters could have conceived. These stories will surprise, wrong-foot and frequently unsettle, but will always call the reader back to find something new, something extra every time they embark on any one of these little tales. I guarantee this collection won't be put down to gather dust. A sparkling debut from a new talent I'm sure will soon be a household name.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Dark Tales, Masterfully Told.
This collection sings off the page in a range of voices and is a joy to read. Mathew Gostelow is a master story-teller and these stories take the reader on a varied and endlessly surprising journey into darkness. Gostelow is a word-magician with a boundless imagination; the stories are original, gripping, tense and often terrifying, but woven with such humane tenderness and humanity that they linger in the mind long after you've closed the book. The best thing is, you get to read them again and again, and they continue to deliver. A superb read.
