'Throughout time, the Northern Lights have been seen as having magical powers which we mere humans cannot understand. In Finland, they are also know as revontulet or "fox fires." There is an old folk tale that the aura was caused by a fox running through the tundra. As it ran through the snow, its bushy tail sent sparks of fire spinning up into the sky.’ Meet me Under the Northern Lights will transport you to Finland for a slow-burn romance and a coming of age story. Lucy experiences a career ending scandal and escapes away to a winter wonderland faraway. Her arctic journey thaws her emotions to experience life joys rather than expectations forged as a famous radio show personality. This novel has great group of secondary characters who help with the day-to-day runnings of the resort. Then there is Tommi, the brooding grumpy owner, who might just believe that the Northern Lights are a blessing for relationships and one of the most romantic signs there can be. Sometimes you fall behind on your reading, but I am so glad I had a chance to read this it was such a charming and exciting read.
I've never read a book taking place in Finland and the descriptions sound glorious. I really would love to have a chance to visit someday. The author has such realistic descriptions of the food, the dangers if you don't bundle up and getting lost in the snow in the dark. Snowshoeing sounds like it would be fun once you get the hang of it.
I've heard how breathtaking the northern lights are and there was such a nice description of them here.
I enjoyed getting to know the characters, they really had a lot going on and some drama thrown in for good measure. It really would be an adjustment going to an area such as this that is so different that what you are used to.
I will be looking out for more books by the author.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinion expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a little more serious than I anticipated, but I was grateful to follow the heroine’s journey. It was a complete arc, which I appreciated. She grew exponentially.

From the book cover, I thought this book was a light, holiday read. That thought was quickly dispelled when I began reading. This is a story of transformation and not a light subject matter. I do not think I am giving anything away with stating that. Due to being a transformation theme, the main character in the beginning of the story is usually not one that most people would like. That is definitely the case with this book. I am a bit too old and not as tolerant as I used to be, and the first half of the book was really difficult to read due to my strong dislike of Lucy. I pushed through reading and honestly did not want to continue, but I do not like to put down a book unread.

In addition to my strong dislike of Lucy, the storyline also dragged in the first half. I read the Kindle version and kept looking at the percentage read, so I know at 53% the storyline began to change, and my feelings of reading the book changed also. I was actually very interested to continue reading at this point.

The second half of the book moved at a much better pace and I was thoroughly involved in the plot and it held my interest while reading and also while not reading. I do recommend this book, but the possible reader should understand that it will maybe take some drive to get through the first half. My rating is blended, how I feel about the first half and the second half.

Radio host Lucy is horrified when a viral video appears to show her snuggling up with a coworker—the boyfriend of an Instagram influencer. When the online threats turn real, Lucy escapes to a Finnish adventure resort near the Arctic Circle. Completely unprepared for the winter climate, she spends her first few days there learning to survive. With the help of owner Tommi, she discovers an uncomplicated lifestyle unlike anything she's known before. When her past intrudes, will it destroy her new sense of peace?

This book is not so much romance as women's fiction with a secondary romance plot. (I'd call it chick lit, but chick lit is generally funny—and this book is not, IMO). The story is primarily focused on Lucy and her complicated life choices. There's a LOT of drama in this book, without the happy feels of a romance to offset it. The love subplot between Lucy and Tommi is sweet and has a happy ending.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK/One More Chapter for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is my first book by this author. I must say that I really disliked the book at the beginning-I never really grew to like the main character Lucy. I almost just said NO, but I kept on because I do have a love of the nordic lands. The setting and descriptions were fantastic. I liked all the other characters but Lucy just made me mad. She did get a raw deal, but she had her own issues and was self destructing. I did enjoy the ending. Just wish the lead character had been someone else. 3.5 stars

This was a wonderfully told story of a woman rediscovering herself when she didn't even know she needed to. How a change of pace, some new scenery, slowing down and keeping an open mind can lead to a joy you never knew you needed. This felt closer to a fiction novel with a thread of romance to it. I would actually rate Lucy's overall story a 4 and the romance element closer to a 3. HOWEVER, the setting was spectacular. I want to go to Finland like yesterday.

Read this book on a cold winter's day while cuddled up under blankets with a nice hot beverage by your side. You will feel transported to the magical landscape of Wild Zone where the Northern Lights reign supreme.

Story is a bit far-fetched and simple / black and white at times, but it‘s a nice enough romp for some lazy afternoons. And the description of the Finnish life makes me want to go there, warmly wrapped up. The book did keep me interested enough to read through to the very predictable ending, at least. 3,5 stars, rounded up to 4 for the hot-chocolate effect of an happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful winter themed romantic comedy drama
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 9, 2021

‘Meet Me Under the Northern Lights’ is a lovely romantic comedy-drama by Emily Kerr. I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook for an immersive experience. The audiobook was narrated by Catrin Walker-Booth.

This winter-themed novel proved a delight. It is witty and charming with a love affair at its heart that I felt developed in a natural way. I class it as a comedy-drama as there are some serious themes; though I felt that these were well integrated into the overall narrative.

Its lead is Lucy Fairweather, the host of a popular syndicated breakfast radio show. She enjoys her work even if it means waking up at stupid-o’clock. Yet this particular morning she is confronted by news that a cleverly edited video of her partying at a pub has gone viral. The trolls are out in force and the tabloid press is hounding her.

Given the chaos, Lucy yearns to escape somewhere far, far away. Her best friend’s husband is Finnish and his brother, the handsome and broody Tommi, has just opened the Wild Zone - an adventure centre deep in the woods for folk wanting an experience of the Artic Circle. Tommi agrees to let Lucy stay in return for helping out with the guests.

It seems a perfect temporary solution. Yet while the Wild Zone may be a winter wonderland, Lucy is completely unprepared for the extreme cold, the ice, snow shoes and skis. It proves a steep learning curve. Will an encounter with the breathtaking Northern Lights change her luck, in both life and love?

At times I was frustrated with Lucy as she could be her own worst enemy, though ultimately I was rooting for her, especially her quest to uncover the source of the viral smear campaign. I also felt that Emily Kerr did a great job of portraying Finnish culture and the sense of community that Lucy discovers in Finland.

With respect to the audiobook, it was my first experience of Catrin Walker-Booth as a narrator. I found her voice light and rich, a pleasure to listen to.

Overall, a lovely winter-themed romantic comedy-drama that was entertaining and uplifting. I am certain that it will prove popular over a wide readership.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Book my place to see the Northern Lights now. Such a magical place, can't help but be transported to this idyllic place.

After being subjected to nasty cyber bullying, Lucy escapes to the stunning outdoor retreat, Wild Zone near the Arctic Circle. Whilst it took me a while to take to Lucy and to get into the story, there's a host of characters including some beautiful husky dogs to whisk you away to this winter wonderland. The writer deals sensitively with some serious issues. A journey of self discovery, which was an enjoyable winter read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brillant Read: 'Meet Me Under the Northern Lights'

A Brilliant Read: 'Meet Me Under the Northern Lights'
Meet Me Under the Northern Lights transports the reader from the suburbs of Sheffield to the wilds of Finland and tips of the Arctic Circle. Along the way we meet Lucy Fairweather, whose metaphorical journey from her erstwhile celebrity radio presenting role to chalet maid in a Finnish wilderness holiday camp, is undertaken in anything but fair weather circumstances. As she travels towards true love and self-knowledge, Lucy’s glittery celebrity reputation is tarnished with universal human issues such as coping with grief and the twenty-first century, first world problem of internet trolls and how to deal with them.
This skilfully written romantic comedy is no obvious journey towards a happy ending. At times en route popular radio star Lucy becomes ‘Loose Lucy’ and even ‘un-loveable Lucy’ but this is a fascinating and cleverly plotted novel which has the reader laughing out loud, cooing over huskies, learning the rudiments of cross-country skiing, quinzee building and even marvelling at the eponymous Northern Lights. The lesson, ‘Even when something appears to be ruined, something can be salvaged’ gives hope to us all.
It’s a must read from the 5 star author Emily Kerr, which will leave a warm glow around the reader.
