Not A Chance: a best friend's brother, second chance, spicy sports romance (Heartstrings Book 2) Kindle Edition
From the romance author of Not as Advertised comes a swoon-worthy sports romance. Perfect for fans of Lucy Score and Stephanie Archer.
Indie Layne has a plan: escape her overbearing parents, and start the nonprofit of her dreams in sunny California. But when her father pulls strings to uproot her life, she begrudgingly moves to Toronto for a job on his terms. Determined to stay focused, the last thing she expects is to run into Theo Yao-Miller—her teenage crush and her best friend's older brother. He’s older, and still completely off-limits. Or is he?
After thirteen years as a star NHL goalie for the Vancouver Frost, Theo's sudden trade to the Toronto Tempests is the shakeup he never saw coming. With chronic knee pain threatening his career, hockey is complicated enough without Indigo Layne moving in across the hall. She's no longer the quiet girl he once knew -- she's fierce, independent, and impossible to ignore. Keeping his distance? That was easier six years ago.
As sparks fly and secrets surface, both Theo and Indie must confront the past—and their undeniable connection. But when the stakes are their dreams and reputations, will love be worth the risk?
Heartwarming and full of second chances, Not A Chance is a spicy romance perfect for readers who crave a love story that breaks the ice and melts your heart.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024Not a Chance is the second book I read by Violet K. Avery and I loved it just as much as the first tone! The author does an amazing job of incorporating emotions, and the heavy, into her writing, while also tying in so many moments of lightness and humor.
This book follows Indie, one of Abbie’s besties from the first book in this series, after she is forced to relocate due to her family. Meanwhile, at the same time, Indie and Abbie’s other bestie’s older brother, Theo, is relocated to the same city after a trade from his NHL team. Theo and Indie were friendly as kids, but haven’t seen each other in 6 years. A lucky series of events forces this pair back together again, and from there we see so much unfold!
I loved this book. The balance between the emotional aspects, and being broken up by characters like there’s siblings and Gizmo(the most adorable chihuahua ever), was an amazing balance. In addition, it was a great minimal detail hockey romance, with not too many hockey parts, but focusing on the friendship and team aspects.
Overall, I loved this book and cannot wait for Emery’s story!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024This was a fantastic read and I’m thrilled I took a chance to request an ARC from Grey’s PR when I read the blurb!
The storyline as a great backstory with Indie being best friends with Theo’s younger sister since they were small children and him unintentionally breaking her heart when she was 19. Now both Indie and Theo have moved to Toronto and are neighbors, and the age gap between them isn’t a factor anymore.
Indie works for the NHL team Theo was traded to and she tried her best to resist his sexy charm. She’s used to taking care of or protecting those around her, so she’s unprepared for Theo’s tender care and protectiveness. I loved the sexy banter between them and her ability to stand toe to toe with his teammates.
Her family is unbelievably toxic and it’s no wonder she treasures her friendship with Theo’s sister and adores his family. Indie fostering Gizmo was a sweet addition to the story. Gizmo, a nearly hairless chihuahua immigrating to Canada definitely needs a warm wardrobe to keep her from freezing!
I’m eager for more books from this author!
I received a free ARC from the author and Grey’s PR; and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024Enjoyed Theo and Indie’s story. It had some great tropes- forced proximity, age gap, hockey player mmc, second chance romance, best friend’s older brother… Theo and Indie both overcome major emotional speed bumps regarding each of their family situations that eventually have them opening their eyes and realizing they can’t stay away from each other and they don’t want to either. Once that happens, their story is sweet and spicy and they find the life altering love that they both didn’t know they wanted and needed. Both are ready and willing to give up their dreams for the other and finally realizing that being together, wherever that may be, is what matters most. ❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024What a great introduction to Violet K Avery’s writing. I loved the character development in this best friends brother/second chance romance and the emotions evoked from every choice Indie made based on her experience with family.
The push and pull between Theo and Indie had me hooked from the beginning. Indie’s plan of avoidance only worked for so long under Theo’s determination to show Indie that she could trust in someone else and rely on him.
Having an overbearing father and indifferent mother really messed up Indie’s view on relationships and it took Theo’s patient and understanding approach to allow Indie to open up.
Great story and writing from an author i would definitely read more from.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024I am new to this series but I am definitely going to go back and read the first one!
This is an amazing read! Indigo and Theo were both amazing characters. They have an amazing connection together. It was easy to root for them the entire time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story
Not A Chance is a beautifully written second-chance sports romance that kept me hooked from start to finish. I absolutely loved the dynamic between Theo and Indie—especially the way Theo quickly realizes that Indie is the one for him after six years apart. His protective nature and unwavering support for her made him such a swoon-worthy hero.
One of the things I appreciated most was how Theo not only shows Indie that she’s his one and only, but also empowers her to stand up for herself. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their journey felt heartfelt and genuine.
That being said, I wasn’t ready for this story to end. After Indie finally stands up for herself, I felt like there was still more to explore, and I would have loved to see a bit more resolution. Despite that, this was a fantastic read, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to more from Violet K. Avery!
