If you’re looking to enhance your friendships, I recommend giving this a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024I debated whether to buy this book because I have always had friends and never found having or keeping friends difficult at all. But I find myself in a second home during the winter and would like more social friends there. I have not found meeting people there easy. I found her tips about asking people out helpful, but otherwise I found the book to be mostly common sense without a lot of ideas I hadn’t already thought of such as meeting people at activities. This book seems to help others based on other reviews and has good ideas for some. However, I did not find it terribly useful.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024I appreciated that this book is geared to older adults, as there are unique challenges to making and maintaining friendships in this age group. The author presents a 7-step framework to what she calls nourishing friendships, where she lays out common-sense but useful tips for friendship building. The book also covers skills that are helpful when seeking new friends or keeping old ones. Especially valuable (obvious but important to remember) was the book’s emphasis that even a friendship that doesn't last a lifetime can still be a rewarding and treasured relationship.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024This is an honest and insightful assessment of how we can hinder our ability to make and maintain friendships. It also details, in each scenario, what is required to overcome obstacles to building friendships. I found the reflection activities at the end of each chapter helpful in identifying our actions and beliefs that potentially sabotage our interactions. Finally, chapters 4 and 5 help us identify "bad friends" and "unhealthy friends" by how they use criticism or negativity as a communication strategy. This is an excellent read for someone struggling with making friends or going through an evaluation of their current friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024I'm in midlife and have found making new friends more challenging as I get older. I've often wondered where the magic touch of my teen and early twenties years went for making friends easily and in numbers.
I thought this book was good but a little overwhelming. It could be edited to be a lot tighter. My sense was that I'd picked up the key messages about seventy percent of the way through but felt obligated to keep going to the bitter end. The best take-outs for me were assessing your values. Hence, you understand who you're compatible to be friends with, the section on assessing what you value in a friendship, the idea of applying diversity and inclusion lens to whom you reach out for potential friendship and recognising that dealing with conflict in a relationship is an essential skill. These bits were all great, and the author has much credibility to write this book.
I just found that key concepts were repeated in multiple chapters from slightly different angles. Could definitely be pared down to make a good book unbeatable.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025The book starts off by explaining 21 reasons why we may have lost friendships or didn't have time for friendships or lack friendship skills. Next, the author explains why friends matter, types of friends, and how to empower friendships. There is discussion on how friendships change as we change and as we age, and how to tell the difference between friends who nourish you and friends who are unhealthy for you. Chapter 7 is all about how to be a good friend, including taking responsibility, being aware of your feelings and actions, being a friend with love and kindness, setting boundaries, and being supportive. The second part of the book focuses on 7 steps to follow to embrace a positive mindset about friends and how to grow your friendships. It includes some affirmations. It gives suggestions for 10 ways to meet new people and then nourish that new friendship. Part three is about the skills we need to have to make friendships easier - like self-confidence, assertiveness, and a positive mindset. The author discusses communication skills, emotional regulation, resolving conflicts, and how to say NO.

5.0 out of 5 stars A road map to friendship
A great book that explores what can be a complex landscape of friendship – and offers a 7-step model to creating the nourishing friendships most of us seek. While Alisoun may have originally written the with midlife readers in mind, it’s clear the key messages relate to friendships at any age.
The book takes a practical approach that combines self-reflection exercises with actionable advice to both nurture existing friendships and form new ones. 5.0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt guide to building friendships
This book came into my life at the perfect time. As someone in midlife, I’ve found it harder to meet new people and maintain meaningful friendships. This guide gave me practical tips that felt doable, not overwhelming. I loved how it focused on both finding new friends and nurturing existing relationships. After reading it, I’ve already started taking small steps to connect more, and it’s made a big difference.
