Race To Novus Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

A daughter’s last chance at redemption on an alien planet. A sweeping secret that could not only end her dreams, but her life as well.

Finn Rucker boards the starship to seek a fresh start as part of a colonizing effort on Joya. The race, sponsored by Governus, yields free land and startup funds for the lucky winners. The number of entrants guarantees someone is going to lose and Finn is determined that she and her bionic horse, Herc, are among the winners.

Racing through uncharted jungle to the settlement of Novus, Finn and her fellow racers soon discover that not everything is as it seems – and Governus withheld information from the contestants. Strange beasts attack the racers, mechanical equipment begins to fail, and the very air seems out to get them.

When all seems lost, a mysterious people arrive and help the racers, revealing the depth of Governus’ deception. Finn will have to keep her pulse pistols close and her new friends closer – but not too close – as they all race to survive the jungle.

You will love this mashup of Hidalgo and James Cameron’s Avatar as Finn navigates the guilt of her past, the promise of a future, and the imminent dangers of her present.

This book is a really fun take on the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. In this reinvented tale, a bunch of spacefaring humans and aliens race for free homesteading rights on a newly discovered planet. What could go wrong with that?! Just about everything.

The world building in this book is phenomenal, exotic but familiar and easy enough for the reader to feel immersed without getting overwhelmed. Despite the rich and detailed descriptions, the story is fast and intense. Clarke is skilled in keeping the reader engaged and turning pages. I kept telling myself, just one more chapter... then suddenly I'd read the whole thing!

Excellent read with flawed and empathetic characters who are easy to root for.

Race To Novus is an exciting sci-fi adventure with a western flair that did indeed have me racing through the pages! It’s such a unique book and very different from what I usually read, but boy was it fun! There’s an amazing cast of interesting characters, and a touch of romance too. The action is intense, and as the race takes a menacing turn, it’s impossible to put the book down. I highly recommend this for all sci-fi and action adventure lovers. And I saved the best part for last…there is a bionic horse! If you love horses like I do, you’re going to fall in love with Herc!

Really fun adventure, with interesting worldbuilding and good character development.
Finn wants to win the race to Novus to get a prize (a landhold) but also to get away from her past. Mistakes hurt her and her family, so with her trusty (cyborg) horse and a new group of friends, she thinks this will be cake. Turns out the dangers on Joya are way more than just some desert sand and wooded forests. And the secrets the planet holds could change the universe.
Took the spaghetti western to space, with aliens, intrigue, and the pursuit of untold riches.

Sci-fi isn’t usually my go to choice of genera, but it has a horse theme, and I love horses so I thought I’d give it a try. 3 pages in I was hooked! The characters and the plot suck you in, and I found myself up WAY too late at night reading eager to know what happens next! I hope there are more coming since this book leaves you at a bit of a cliffhanger.

Race to Novus is a wonderful adventure with a great cast of characters and the most adorable bionic horse. This book should be added to everyone’s Sci-Fi must read list.

Race to Novus is a fast-paced, action-packed mashup of science fiction, western, and even a little bit of romance. From the very first pages, I was hooked both by the premise of the story and by the interesting and intriguing characters.

I absolutely loved the interaction between main character Finn and her bionic horse, Herc. Finn is exceptionally well-drawn, with just the right amount of backstory to make you invested in her well being. And Herc, well, he's just amazing and, in my honest opinion, the star of the show.

As the "race" begins and progresses, we are introduced to a variety of other characters who come along for the "ride," both human and alien. Every character has a distinct voice and through the various trials and tribulations they experience, you come to care about every one of the protagonist group. And the villains... well, they are as hateful as one might expect and hope in a story like this!

As an avid reader, I can tell you that I know a book is good when I start reading it faster because I can't wait to see what happens next. R.A. Clarke takes "upping the stakes" well into the stratosphere. Just when you think the racers have been thrust into the most impossible situations, they are hit with more and more, leaving you positively breathless with each turn of the page.

I stayed up WAY TOO LATE reading as I got deeper and deeper into a plot that I just could not put down. It's been a week since I've finished and I'm still thinking about the characters.

With solid pacing, characters who you come to care about, endless action, and a satisfying resolution, Race to Novus has it all. HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you don't walk... but RACE to grab a copy today!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Debut Novel

I was fortunate to read an advance copy of this novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some months later, I found myself thinking about it and decided to read it again!

With a likeable protagonist, lovely character development, and interesting world building, Race to Novus is a fun romp that will please a wide range of readers. It gives "Firefly" vibes, so fans of the space western genre will definitely enjoy it.

It stands alone, but I'm hoping for a sequel!
