Georgiana’s Friend Kindle Edition
What if Elizabeth Bennet is the first to love?
Those who love Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice are aware of Fitzwilliam Darcy’s long-concealed attraction for Miss Elizabeth Bennet, his inner turmoil, and the angst that results from how he forces down his attraction. Yet different events in C. P. Odom’s Georgiana’s Friend turn that central issue on its head as it is Darcy who is unaware of the suppressed suffering of another.
Elizabeth Bennet develops a friendship with Darcy’s sister, Georgiana, and also forms an intense affection for the owner of Pemberley. Despite his admitted shortcomings, she cannot deny her love for the haughty Darcy. Her days are filled with agonized despair, since she knows that any attachment between them is impossible due to her lack of fortune or connections.
What will Elizabeth do? Can she remain friends with Georgiana and fight her feelings for Darcy? Will she have to sever the friendship, cutting all ties with the Darcy family and thus ending any possibility of a future with the man who dominates her every thought?

About the author

By training, I’m a retired engineer, born in Texas, raised in Oklahoma, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Sandwiched in there was a stint in the Marines, and I’ve lived in Arizona since 1977, working first for Motorola and then General Dynamics. I raised two sons with my first wife, Margaret, before her untimely death from cancer, and my second wife, Jeanine, and I adopted two girls from China. The older of my daughters recently graduated with an engineering degree and is working in Phoenix, and the younger girl is heading toward a nursing degree. I’ve always been a voracious reader and collector of books, and my favorite genres are science fiction, historical fiction, histories, and, in recent years, reading (and later writing) Jane Austen romantic fiction. This late-developing interest was indirectly stimulated when I read my late wife's beloved Jane Austen books after her passing. One thing led to another, and I now have four novels published: A Most Civil Proposal (2013), Consequences (2014), and Pride, Prejudice, and Secrets (2015), and Perilous Siege, available on Amazon (March 30, 2019). I’m under contract for a fifth novel, A Covenant of Marriage, which is being edited and will be available later in 2019. I retired from engineering in 2011, but I still live in Arizona with my family, a pair of dogs (one of which is stubbornly untrainable), and a pair of rather strange cats. My hobbies are reading, woodworking, and watching college football and LPGA golf (the girls are much nicer than the guys, as well as being fiendishly good putters). Lately I’ve reverted back to my younger years and have taken up building plastic model aircraft and ships (when I can find the time).

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024Oh, wow, five stars are not enough! In my personal list of the best writers in the historical fiction genre, C. P. Odom is a solid favorite. I sincerely appreciate the literary skills and talent in a well-written story; I don’t know how he does it, but he always presents his readers with a high quality product. Maybe, it’s as stated by Darcy’s butler, Reynolds, “Clean living and a pure heart…”
The concept of Elizabeth admiring and loving Darcy from the very beginning of their acquaintance adds a fresh perspective to a P&P variation. She’s the one having tortured thoughts and dreams for a change! I loved Elizabeth’s strong stand against Lady Catherine, Darcy’s silencing of Mrs. Bennet’s nervous wailing, Mr. Bennet’s steel when encountering Wickham, and the courage Anne seemed to absorb from Meeting Elizabeth. It’s a longish book, but I strongly recommend it. It’s a keeper!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024Definitely a good ‘un - CP has again taken the canon characters, held the basic line of P&P but added his own intriguing twists and turns.
Lizzie is far less stubborn than canon, and this reader certainly hurt with her as her love was entirely oblivious. The lovely mix of family and events just keeps evolving with mostly low angst but no tedium.
My only criticism is how Lydia reacted after Wickham abused her. This was a missed opportunity to show how that kind of abuse can affect someone, even if they’re well treated and treasured afterwards. Here, no mention was even made of what happened to her after she fled from the stables half naked. Nobody went after her - all focus was on Wickham.
Other than that, I thoroughly recommend this book.
Btw, this is NOT reviewed in the USA. I’m in New Zealand.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024There are so many things to like about this variation; and yet, so many not to like.
The pros:
For one, this is well-written and edited. So drawn-out is the story and the scenes so well-described that this would be a satisfying go-to if the reader wishes for an all-encompassing and comprehensive tale. Many of the secondary characters of Canon, as well as new ones, are given much attention and focus that they become integral in the story. It’s good to see many of these characters shine in their own right.
The cons:
Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy is portrayed here as rather cold, indifferent and stiff for most part of the novel. Despite his honorable character and his keen attention to duty and propriety, all characteristic of an admirable and lovable gentleman, there isn’t much spark to him. It is only after he was informed of Elizabeth Bennet’s interest in and feelings for him that he seemed altered within the proximity of the romantic hero that is portrayed in Canon. His willingness to marry out of duty to his sister is no less mercenary than those who marry for wealth and/or position. In other words, he rather takes lightly Elizabeth’s devotion for him and decides to marry her for the wrong reason/s. He somewhat changes into someone affectionate towards the end but it’s too little too late. While Elizabeth Bennet is depicted as rather contrary here. For how can a lady of quality bravely face the terror that is Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and at rhetorical same time be the same simpering and weak-minded love struck girl who seems to faint/swoon when the object of her affection is near? I think Elizabeth Bennet has more mettle than that! If anything, the Elizabeth of Canon would know how to conduct herself bravely and with the perfect show of propriety even when faced with the man who does not return her affections. This poor depiction of Elizabeth Bennet is what makes this variation rather infuriating. No! A woman like Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet would never be as weak as this. On the contrary, she would be strong enough to endure facing unrequited love for Fitzwilliam Darcy without losing her friendship with Georgiana Darcy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unrequited love for Elizabeth
4.5* rounded up
C.P. Odom changes things up in Georgiana's Friend by having Elizabeth fall for Darcy first. It's more rare to see Elizabeth dealing with unreturned feelings, especially with Darcy being clueless about it. Instead of his inner turmoil, we get Elizabeth'sᅳand it's both engaging and heartbreaking.
The friendship between Elizabeth and Georgiana is a lovely part of the story, especially early on, giving Elizabeth a reason to be around the Darcy family. I was very much drawn to their bond. As more characters and side plots arise, however, the focus on their friendship fades somewhat, which left me wanting a bit more between them. This friendship also affords Elizabeth the opportunity to see Darcy surrounded by his family and friends, versus the usual proud and haughty version of him Austen readers know from canon’s Meryton assembly, making it easy for her to love him. He has no idea.
This Darcy is more grounded, less proud and brooding than usual, which I really enjoyed. He's weighed down by family responsibilities in a way that feels very real and relatable. His relationship with his siblings, especially his brother David, was a highlight for me, and another huge plot twist. As the youngest, David’s interactions with his older brother reveal a light-hearted side and depth to Darcy's character that I really appreciated. It's a delight when David and Georgiana team up to tease him. It's just a shame we never get an answer as to why Georgiana calls him Alex! I really loved this Darcy portrayal as an older brother, and how he handled Elizabeth’s problem.
Elizabeth has a softer side in this novel. She's more vulnerable and tearful than we usually see her, which may feel a bit out of character. But when it countsᅳespecially in a run-in with Lady Catherineᅳshe holds her own, and that's the Elizabeth I was glad to see.
The story is a long one; I felt there were parts where the narration was doing a lot of the work some good dialogue could have enriched somewhat—Odom does do that well, so I craved more of it. This novel could have ended satisfactorily after the wedding of Elizabeth and Darcy and perhaps an epilogue, but it diverges after their nuptials to Anne de Bourgh and her health struggle. It was fine in the telling, but it felt somewhat disconnected from the book’s title, as the friendship between Georgiana and Elizabeth seemed left by the wayside, and it also detracted from Elizabeth and Darcy’s story. However, it did allow for other happy endings to be explored.
There are some very well-written dramatic or moving moments in the book: one pertaining to Wickham and the involvement of Mr. Bennet, Darcy and Richard; the previously-mentioned run-in with Lady Catherine; and, near the end of the book, a brief but emotional one involving Richard and Mr. and Mrs. Bennet that made tears well up.
Ultimately, Georgiana's Friend is an engaging story of friendship, and a love that goes unanswered for a time but it all results in the happy ending we always expect for our dear couple.
I do love this author and always look forward to any new release. I’m happy to recommend this one too.
