Once Forbidden, Twice Shy Kindle Edition
After experiencing a brutal trauma in New York that I’d rather bury than address, escaping to a new job in London seems like the perfect solution. That was before I was introduced to my new boss, who is none other than my brother’s best friend. You know, the one I’ve been head-over-heels in love with forever.
Jack Merrick had been my crush since I knew what one was. For years we fought the feelings; I didn’t want to humiliate myself and his excuse was not betraying my brother or parents, who had accepted him as their own. Then, the night of my college graduation party, he undressed me in my childhood bedroom and confirmed that there was no one else on this earth for him but me.
When I woke the next morning he was gone, off to take a job as a coder halfway around the world. Four years and a mangled heart later, Jack is the last person I expect to see in London, and something close to fate is tricking me into thinking this is more than a coincidence. Our shared love of programming has always connected us, but now it’s the thing we’re weaponizing to get back at each other.
Until one night, when the emotional scars from my attack resurface and he’s the only one to witness a massive breakdown. He coaxes out my secrets and swears to love and protect me like he couldn’t before. But with everything stacked against us, I’m not sure we can ever have what we’ve always dreamed of.
Except just as we’re beginning to tackle those obstacles, I learn the truth of why he left all those years ago. And suddenly there may be no future for us at all.

About the author

Author of romance novels such as Fleeting and Love at First Fight, Carrie Aarons writes books that are just as swoon-worthy as they are sarcastic. Her stories are fueled by vanilla lattes, meloncholy music, and copious amounts of candles.

Loved this stand alone book! I could not put it down, and that is saying something because I am not much of a reader. I found the book from a tiktok the author had posted, and so glad I purchased it. With the brothers best friend storyline and adding a different country into the mix with the new jobs was a great addition. I was questioning the book towards the end but the author pulled it together beautifully!
I hope I have persuaded you to read the book, and that you enjoy it just as much as I did.
Happy reading!!

"Someone who puts their own feelings aside for years in a move they think will make your own life easier? That's love, sweetheart."
One of my favorite tropes summed up in two sentences, and it is the ultimate theme of this read.
Taylor Arnold is ready for a new beginning. She has moved her life from New York to London -- away from family, away from secrets she would rather leave in the past. Unfortunately, fate did not quite get the memo as her boss turns out to be none other than Jack Merrick.
Jack is her brother's best friend and was her childhood crush..or so she thought when she finally mended her shattered heart. She and Jack finally acted on her feelings a few days after her college graduation party only for him to leave without a word the following day. Now here he is, and she has to work with him every day.
Jack is not without his own share of secrets. He thought he has put enough distance between himself and Taylor to quell his feelings for her, but one look and those suppressed emotions have come back in full force.
I really enjoy a good heart-wrenching read, and Carrie Aarons always delivers. She gives us two adults tackling young love and heartbreak with maturity and -- especially in a workplace setting -- professionalism. I absolutely love that Jack was wholeheartedly in love with Taylor from the beginning and completely committed once he realizes that resistance is indeed futile.
I adore a couple who is connected physically and emotionally, and we get that with Jack and Taylor. Carrie Aarons did a great job of balancing the spicy moments with emotional conversations. I also love that while Taylor's brother Kit was skeptical and a bit hurt from their reveal (rightfully so), he and the rest of the family eventually embrace it without being condescending to Taylor and disrespectful to Jack as the best friend's sister tends to be.
The pacing towards the end was a little off to me with trying to tie off the loose ends in the book, but it did not take away too much from this enjoyable read.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2022Taylor and Jack's story is sweet and steamy. I loved them and their family dynamics. They've known each other forever and been in love with each other for just about as long. When things happen, it pulls them apart only to push them back together years later for a second chance.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2022Once Forbidden, Twice Shy is a fabulous second chance brothers best friend read. I love this one so much. You get such fabulous feels when it comes to Jack and Taylor. They just fit so well and always have. I love how close they have always been. You feel for Taylor when it comes to her timing with Jack. You feel the love and you feel the passion they both share. There is this wonderful forbidden office romance that will put a smile on your face as they are kept in close contact with work. Jack is a sweetheart. You understand why he hesitates to take their relationship public with his relationship with Taylor's brother. It just gives you beautiful feels the more and more Jack and Taylor are together. I could not get enough of these two. I love Jack and Taylor so much. You need to meet them today.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2022Once Forbidden, Twice Shy is the new standalone romance novel from author Carrie Aaron’s. It’s a sweet romance with some angst and some spice!
Taylor and Jack have known each other practically their entire lives. Jack is the best friend of Taylor’s brother Kit. Four years ago after Taylor gave Jack her heart and they had one great night together, Jack ghosted her. They haven’t spoken since. Until the day Taylor arrives at her new job in London, the same day Jack arrives to work at the same company as her boss. Awkward! Both are hiding things, both have pain over how they parted, but if they can be honest, they might have a chance at happily ever after.
There’s so much to like about this book. The characters are great. Taylor and Jack are warm, and sweet, and real. Their co-workers and Taylor’s family are great, too. The narrative is strong, and there’s a strong emotional undercurrent between Jack and Taylor. What I did not like is that the big secret Jack is keeping isn’t really worth all the drama he has put Taylor through. Everything is built up to be major drama - like telling her family - but it’s just not that big a deal. I still enjoyed reading the book because I like the characters, but the book is rather anticlimactic.
Read Once Forbidden, Twice Shy if you enjoy angsty forbidden romances. Let me know if you read it - I’d love to discuss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood secrets!
Taylor Arnold has been in love with Jack Herrick since childhood. Jack is Taylor's brother Kit best friend. Jack has loved Taylor for just as long. Fears and obstacles have always kept them apart but when they both get jobs in a London company, their lives become entwined and their feelings finally break free. Will the secrets they both have hidden stop them from finding their forever? Can they be honest about the past in order to step into the future together? This was yet another addictive read from Carrie. The characters were flawed but hopeful and you hope along with them. The added villain to the story makes the story a little fairy taled but ever so addicting. Can't wait for Carrie's next book

4.0 out of 5 stars “I don’t just want the benefits, I want everything.”
There was so much to love about this book! And while it’s 100% a Carrie Aarons romance with all of the swoon and angst factors, I also love that this book was essentially Carrie’s love letter to the city of London. And as someone who has lived in London, this was a nostalgic trip back to the city I studied in.
Once Forbidden, Twice Shy has:
✨ a second chance
✨ best friend’s little sister/brother’s best friend
✨ forbidden in the workplace
✨ banter, chemistry and sexual tension
✨ mutual pining
✨ he spends the whole book grovelling
✨ they work in tech!
✨ he’s her new boss
✨ all about London
Books like these are why I love ‘brother’s best friend’ and ‘second chance’ so much. Taylor and Jack’s history is long and complicated and also pretty messy. There’s a whole lot of miscommunication and secrets and bad choices, but they’ve had four years apart to deal with it on their own. Except, being offered jobs with the same company in London (where he is now also her boss) really makes things even more stressful for both of them. Taylor’s trying to put space between her and Jack, while he’s just trying to get as close as possible. The pushing and pulling dragged on a little more than I would have liked, but feeling their struggles and the pain they were dealing with being around each other felt so real.
I definitely appreciated the conversation around male infertility, because it’s not often something that’s addressed in romances. We’re so used to hearing about women struggling to conceive or being infertile, that to see a man struggle with that and not having the choice to start a family was really great. And it hurt, because you could tell just how deeply Jack and Taylor’s love for each other and the desire to have it all together goes. Taylor’s got her own share of trauma that stops her from letting go and I can’t even begin to wrap my head around what she went through. But I loved how they helped each other through their traumas by talking it out and dealing with it like adults.
Carrie’s books always offer steamy scenes and I knew that with these two I was going to truly enjoy it. Between their pining and the sexual tension and frustrations building, it was bound to get hot in the bedroom. And it did, most definitely. I liked the intimate moments where they’re holding each other and talking about life and everything in between too. It’s clear that their relationship is so much more than just the physical stuff and I always enjoy watching the couple fall in love while also falling into bed together.

I must confess I struggled connecting with the story. I love this author’s writing style, how she creates a perfect world for each book but I just didn’t fall in love with the hero instantly.
When we discovers his reason for bailing out on the heroine, I was shocked. This topic is not something that authors tend to approach and I was pulled by the internal struggle and the impact.
