About the authors
Eugenia Chu is an attorney, turned stay-at-home mom, turned award-winning and best-selling author. She is a first generation Chinese-American citizen and lives on a magical beach in Miami with her husband and son, Brandon, who is the inspiration for her stories. She enjoys reading, writing, traveling, yoga and drinking too much coffee. She has been a presenter at numerous schools, libraries and book festivals.
When Brandon was very little, the author couldn’t find children’s storybooks to read to him which touched upon Chinese culture and which included some Chinese (Mandarin) words to teach and/or reinforce his Chinese vocabulary, so she started writing her own.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a fun cookbook for kids and families! Each recipe is inspired by a children’s story and the book includes measurements in US and UK quantities. It is divided into three parts and is so much fun to read, and try to figure out what the story that inspired each recipe is about. Kids will especially enjoy trying to make each recipe and the characters spread across the book who will help them learn to make foods, and might just inspire them to not just eat new things but read new stories!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a fun and educational cook book for kids and adults to use together. I love the kitchen safety tips and the conversion chart at the beginning, as well as the explanation at the end of cooking terms. The recipes are simple enough for a child to try them on their own but are good for adults too. I'm looking forward to trying the recipe for Chinese Dumplings!

We will be making some of these during the winter break with our kids! A great way to have kids in the kitchen with our little chefs to enjoy and reading along the way!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024Format: KindleOh, wow, I adore this idea, because I love matching up snacks with books. This is a bright and beautifully laid out book (nice fonts and colors) with a nice mix of mains and sides, and a variety of food groups. The perfect gift for little chefs, and I'm sure preschool teachers will eat this one up (pun intended).
Well done to the author. This would be such a fun and bonding activity to share with a preschool, kindergarten, or lower elementary child.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting way to encourage children and adults to do more cooking together!
Format: KindleVerified Purchase"Once Upon a Plate: a culinary journey through stories for little chefs", Written and Illustrated by #authorforce is one of the best combinations of recipes and book suggestions I have ever read for incorporating the love of food and reading for your family, friends or school classroom.
I now want to try out every recipe and read the related books with my children. Many of the recipes would easily be made for a cooking lesson by teachers in the classroom.
Also, the illustrations are bright, engaging, and you are left feeling happy and filled with amusement as all the possibilities unfold.
What an amazing way to interest children and adults to do more cooking and reading together!
What are you waiting for?
🧡 Happy Reading! 🧡

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a fun book with some great recipes!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI received an alert from one of the authors in this multi-authored cookbook about the release, and it made my day. Cooking with little ones can be tricky, but this set of recipes runs from wholesome main courses which will appeal to any eye and palate, to
I haven't tried them all but the Deep in the ocean adventure brings to mind perfectly the Ocean Full of Wonder by Anna Smithers (if you haven't read the series - highly recommended!) and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed Puptastic Protein Packed Pancakes - it didn't matter that we hadn't read the book, just giving her the pancake made to look like a pooch was enough to make her tuck in! Another one which went down a storm was Rosy's chicken and rainbow rice - we love Rosy the bug in this household!
The book is ostensibly organised into mains, sides and deserts and snacks but I think my copy may have been a bit jumbled up (or maybe because I'm in the UK and I count mac and cheese as a main lol), but all the recipes are very easy to follow and have introduced us to now authors and their books. I'm pretty sure some of these recipes are going to become firm staples in our family diet from now on. NB it is written in American English and thus uses some ingredients which UK cooks may not have easiest access to (for example, dark chocolate melting wafers - I think this probably is just what we would call cooking chocolate?).
Overall, this is a really useful and fun addition to your kitchen shelves with some yummy recipes and a great way to discover new books and authors which your children might love.
