Darcy Burke is the USA Today Bestselling Author of captivating, compelling historical mystery and romance as well as small-town contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily ever after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations.

A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, artist daughter, and imaginative son who will out-write her one day. They’re a crazy cat family with two Bengal cats, a small, fame-seeking cat named after a fruit, a senior rescue Maine Coon with attitude to spare, an adorable former stray who wandered onto their deck and into their hearts, and two bonded boys who used to belong to (separate) neighbors but chose them instead. You can find Darcy at a winery, in her comfy writing chair, folding laundry (which she loves), or having hilarious game night with the family. Mrs Isabelle Cortland is a young widow and governess to two girls. As the daughter of a head of Oxford, she is intelligent, witty, independent and beautiful. Ten years ago there was a perfect forbidden night of love with a student, Val, Duke of Eastleigh. But although the young lovers thought their destiny lay elsewhere, that night remained in their minds and hearts. Val had a tragic marriage to a faithless wife and Isabelle married a cruel man who gambled and left her in debt. Each vowed not to marry until fate stepped in. The family Isabelle works for is the guest of Val for a few weeks until their home is refurbished. Hurt and left destitute and alone, Isabelle only trusts herself and her hope is to become a headmistress of a girls' school. But seeing Val again, it was like a decade disappeared. He is the only man she ever loved but she knows as a duke, he can never marry her, a nobody, and she refuses to be his mistress. Val is stunned to see Isabelle and the feelings from that magical night are always in his heart. Can these two people face their true feelings and take a chance with their hearts and society rules to attain the greatest prize life can offer?? A magical and enchanting story of the rocky course of true love!

So far, this series has felt rather perfunctory. The plot lines are interesting, but the path through the conflict to the happily ever after is just slightly better than average entertaining,

The event that underlies this book seems so blasé, it’s hard to work up a connection to the lovers at present. If it was such a grand passion 10 years ago, one would think there would have been some discussion of their future, a bitter or heartbreaking parting, even. But they had a friendship, one night of passion, and that sustains their longing for ten years and even spoils both their marriages.

The hero, having endured an awful marriage, comes around to the idea of marrying a commoner pretty quickly, but the heroine is annoyingly reticent, While I suppose her reasons could be valid, her rejection of what’s offered seems more contrived to further the plot.

Still, the underlying theme of the wicked duke’s and strong, independent heroine’s is appealing. I’m just waiting for one of the books to reach out and dazzle me.

A story of a long ago encounter that never was forgotten by either party. Years ago, Valentine, Duke of Eastleigh had experienced one amazing night with Isabelle Cortland, the daughter of the head of the college. Since then he had been through a terrible marraige and was determined never to get caught in that trap again. But then he literally ran into Isabelle.
Isabelle had married after that encounter but was now a widow and left with no money, so she went to work as a governess for the two girls of Lord Barkley. Having renovations done on his townhome, they stayed at Val's house. What are the chances? She intended to stay far away.
As fate would have it, almost after her arrival she met him unexpectedly in the corridor. "Isabelle?" She was older of course, and far more beautiful than he remembered. He blinked, closing his eyes for a moment, but when he opened them she was still there." paraphrased but he was astonished and the spark was still there! Could their love rekindle from so long ago?
Darcy Burke always writes such wonderful stories that pull me in quickly. Such a heartwarming second chance emotional tale with characters that grab you and have you desperately wanting them to find their happy ending. The secondary characters are full of life and bring a lot to this tale and I cannot wait until the next book in this series! This series is an amazing collaberation between two brilliant authors of historical romance!!

Our next hero is this series is a wicked, handsome, seductive, rich bachelor - Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh. He married an unfaithful wife who died in childbirth but he never forgot the one night of surrender 10 years ago.

Isabelle Cortland, is a lovely, clever, extremely intelligent (her father taught her all the same things that were being taught to the boys attending Oxford) daughter of a head of college at Oxford. She married and her husband died (it was not a love match) & her father died within months of one another. Her husband left her with nothing but gambling debts & she used her inheritance from her father to pay off her husband's debts. She becomes a governess & goes to London but even though it's been 10 years since she has seen Val, she still remembers the night , like it was just yesterday.

Eastleigh's friend, 2 daughters & governess come to stay with him in London as their townhouse is not finished being refurbished. The adventures begin when Val discovers the governess to be the woman he has never been able to forget & she still haunts his dreams. What will happen - can the rekindle their attraction, can there be more between a duke and governess, is there something fate has seen besides the physical draw between them?

This is a very romantic story & Darcy Burke always creates the best characters that you root for from the beginning & love after the book ends. I highly recommend this book & the series to all historical romance readers!

The following are my thoughts as I read this book. Isabelle Cortland…employed by Lord and Lady Barkley, takes care of Caroline and Beatrice, has a history with the Duke of Eastleigh. Valentine Fairfax…Duke of Eastleigh, part owner of the Wicked Dukes, a widower. Wow, circumstances changed for the h without warning. The H wants to recapture the past but not look closely at the feelings it would provoke. Ahhh sneaking into forbidden places is always a thrill. It appears that family must intervene if things are to progress successfully. What an adorable story of love recaptured. There is mild steam.

Loved this story of Valentine's and Isabelle's romantic history - the characters are sizzling hot together - the other characters of Viola and Grandmama are developed well too and Viola with her mischief making definitely needs a romance that has a daring and understanding lover or Viola will run that man to a frazzle - the plot is strong and I love the Wicked Duke's Club theme that runs through the stories, don't we all like somewhere to go and be with friends whatever there profession - this series is a winner so far for me

Happenstance and fate throw Val and Isabelle an unexpected second chance at love.
Isabelle takes after her belated father, the beloved head of Oxford college, and dreams of running her own school, but for now finds herself the governess to two adorable girls and the unexpected temporary lodger at a Duke's home. A duke she just happened to have a too brief, passionately whirlwind affair with many moons ago.
Still magnetically drawn to each other and ensnared my a history steeped in desire and one fleeting but immeasurably memorable moment, that refuses to be forgotten, chemistry still sparks and craving blossoms into need and desire. But can a future really be possible between a governess and a duke? Well, a spot of interference from one formidable dowager duchess/Grandmama and with one perceptive, highly intriguely and tenacious sister, Viola, on the case, anything is possible.
A well written romance that holds your attention with wit, strong characters and deeply tormented yearning. A lovely, heartwarming addition to the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant story

Darcy Burke generally writes a nice story. In this short novel once you ignore the fact that Aristocracy did not normally marry commoners (one must suspend disbelief) it was an easy read and a happy ending. Of course, disbelief must also be suspended regarding two Dukes owning a pub and frequently going there: also very unlikely. What I discovered is that the books in this series are written alternately by Darcy's "Bestie" Erica Ridley who is purported to be a well known author, and Darcy herself. I read the first book and the plot was pathetic and very, very stupid and unlikely, so although this book was ok I shall not inflict any others in the series on myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great continuation of the series

I really enjoyed this book, but I can only give this one 4 1/2 stars. It's not quite the 5 star read of the One Night for Seduction. All the characters were great - especially Val's family. And I loved Val - how he understood Isabella's need for independence. I just felt like there was a conversation missing. They never really had a heart to heart about their past or why they ended up marrying other people. Even we, as the reader, aren't really given an explanation as to why, if they loved each other then, that they didn't marry. I would have liked a bit more information or conversation or something with regards to that. Otherwise, the book was great. I will definitely keep reading the series!

Val, Duke of Eastleigh first met Isabelle Cortland the years ago. Neither of them have forgotten their one night of surrender. This was an engaging story of two people who had not achieved the happiness and fulfilment that they had experienced ten years ago with each other. Isabelle was a very intelligent woman but knew nothing of the so-called feminine talents like watercolours, musical ability or needlework. Her desire was to be a headmistress of a girl’s school. However, her meeting with Val, has her reassessing what she wants to do with her life. I liked the close relationship Isabelle had with her two pupils and I loved how Val looked out for Isabelle and the way he brought the two girls to see her. Their relationship was as strong as ever and I enjoyed reading how they progressed.
