A New Lease of Life: A BRAND NEW hilarious, uplifting read from Celia Anderson for 2025 Kindle Edition
The BRAND NEW feel-good read from TOP TEN bestselling author Celia Anderson
A warm, laugh-out-loud story of fun and friendship for women of a certain age. She's getting rid of old baggage and looking forward to a new lease of life!
Ingrid is desperate to sell up and move on. She no longer needs the large house or the treasures (and tat) collected by her late husband, Tommy, an auctioneer. Then there’s the debt he left her with, too.
So, she jumps at the chance to downsize and move to the beautiful village of Willowbrook on a temporary lease. She’ll open a pop-up shop for just one year – to dispose of Tommy’s accumulated goods – and then move on. No getting embroiled in village life.
But Ingrid hasn’t reckoned on Willowbrook’s extrovert local ladies (known as the Saga Louts). Or handsome local craftsman Joel, with whom there’s a definite attraction. They all want to help set up her shop, ‘The Treasure Trove’.
Surprisingly, it turns out Ingrid can also help them.
Will she ever achieve the fresh start and simpler life she craved? Or will Ingrid discover a wonderful new way to move onwards and upwards?
Fans of Milly Johnson, Maddie Please or Judy Leigh will love Celia Anderson's uplifting, feel-good stories.
Previously published as Onwards and Upwards.

About the author

Celia Anderson was delighted to be given the opportunity to join the author team at Boldwood in early 2024, and is now ready to start a whole new chapter of her own. She enjoys writing contemporary fiction featuring older protagonists, although a wide age range of characters can always be found in her books. Previously a teacher and assistant head, Celia writes full time these days but loves to chat to other authors and readers, and often spends far too much time browsing social media. She is an enthusiastic member of the Romantic Novelists Association, having proudly graduated from their New Writers' Scheme in 2013. The RNA is an amazing source of good advice and a place to meet like-minded, supportive people who will happily talk about books for hours on end. What could be better?
Born and bred in the Midlands, Celia has long been tempted by the idea of living near the sea, and her dream at last became a reality in 2023 when she moved to the south coast. This has meant that a whole new range of story-making boosts are available, and she’s currently working flat out to explore them all. A fresh writing space and grandchildren on hand to cuddle, plus a busy promenade and beach just down the road – there’s no shortage of places to people-watch. Alternatively, give her a long train journey and her notebook and pen will also work overtime as she shamelessly eavesdrops and watches the world go by.
Celia loves flowers and flower arranging but tries to avoid any kind of gardening that involves digging up worms. She plays the piano very badly and is a crossword addict. A doting grandma to Ida, Levi and Peggy, she has tried several times to learn to knit them jumpers without much success (or joy). Some hobbies are probably best left alone. She loves walking, cooking, reading, more reading, having large bubbly baths, eating, and also drinking wine. Over the years, she has found that all of these activities bar the first two may be done simultaneously, although this can be messy.
With Boldwood's innovative and forward-thinking approach to publishing as her inspiration, Celia is looking forward to exploring brand new settings and pastures new. She hopes you will come along for the ride! Life Begins at 50! is the start of the Willowbrook series and A New Lease of Life was published on January 20th 2025. Dancing in the Moonlight follows in May 2025.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2025Celia Anderson's book, A New Lease of Life, is an excellent read. Once you start reading it, you won't want to put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025It started very slow, the middle was fàst paced and juicy, but The ending was rather bland, and didn't quite live up to my expectations. All around the story was worth telling but could use some filling in.. some of the characters should be more developed or dropped altogether.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2025Celia writes stories, with a few sprinkles of problems, then eventually love. The other books are good fun, and love is usually found when you least expect it. Another small town with a shop to be run, and the story is wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025A fantastic 4 star read!
Ingrid has recently lost her larger-than-life husband, Tommy, who suffered a fatal stroke during an impromptu karaoke session at a diner.
Trying to figure out what to do with all of Tommy’s “antique treasures” that cluttered their home, Ingrid decides to take over her aunt’s shop in a small village for one year to attempt to sell the items.
Initially Ingrid feels a little claustrophobic in the everyone-knows-everyone village. But when a small group of locals come together to welcome Ingrid and offer their friendship and help setting up Ingrid’s shop, she wonders if it’s possible to find friendship and companionship in this new stage of her life.
I always enjoy a “second chance” book
whether it’s a second chance at life, love, or friendship. I’ve also become a huge fan of authors who write about characters who are 45+ years old and are portrayed as determined, beautiful, smart, sexy, lovable, wise, and capable. And I appreciate those mature female characters still trying to figure out what they want in life!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2025I am very happy that I chanced upon this book. Yes it's got the best kind of romance, I fell in love with the place the people and the storyline. There's never a dull moment and there are a tremendous amount of interesting developments. I wanted it to go on and on.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2025Life after death is always daunting. This story is funny and moving and so many great characters and friendships. There’s even a dog.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2025Sometimes being forced to change your life, can bring you to a life you never dreamed possible. That is what Ingrid found when she was forced to do that, when her husband died and left her with a lot of debt, and a big house that was filled with his treasures. She sold the big house, and packed up the treasures and moved to Willowbrook because her aunt had a shop that she had just closed up, and she was going to rent it for a year, to sell all the treasures.
The friends she found there, the things she discovered, helped her see what she could accomplish, the things she could do, and she could move on with her life. The community was there for her, and she was there for all of them. There were challenges, and things that surprised her, but she kept letting life unfold, and kept stepping into it and moving along, and seeing where it was going to take her. This story has people from children to people in their nineties, and they all got along, learned from each other, have lots of laughs, and it was nice seeing how together, they grew.
I received an ARC from Boldwood Books through NetGalley, and this was an amazing read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2025Ingrid is a middle-aged woman who is keen to make a fresh start after the sudden death of her husband, Tommy. She lands in a little village called Willowbrook and takes over an empty shop, owned by her aunt, to sell some of the "stuff" that her husband hoarded over the years. He left her with a lot of debt.....and another surprise is coming her way!
Along the way, Ingrid meets the Saga Louts, a trio of interesting women a few years older than Ingrid, who are living their lives to the fullest. She also meets Joel and his daughter Olivia and these two will have a big impact on her life :)
This was a very enjoyable read. Everyone was living their lives and interacting with each other in a way that warmed the cockles of my heart. It wasn't one of those stories where everything is perfect and the main characters fall into each others arms and they ride off into the sunset. No, this is a modern story about modern issues and a woman who is trying to come out from under the shadow of her larger-than-life husband. Recovering from grief takes time too, and the book goes into that in a very sensitive and kind way.
4.5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will get drawn into Willowbrook.
The characters in Celia’s books are always believable, you either know someone like them, or you see something of yourself in them, which makes reading her books so personal in a way. This book is no exception. But more than that, you get to meet well loved characters again from the previous visit to Willowbrook, and find out how they’re getting on. We have several other new ones, like Ingrid who arrives as a grieving widow, just trying to move on with her life. Of course the lovely Saga Louts and other well loved people in the village rally round to help her navigate the unexpected problems her husband Tommy left behind. I only ever read in bed last thing at night. Only really gripping books make it downstairs in my house and this was one of them. However, it means I read the book way too fast and was finished before I was really ready to leave Willowbrook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Village full of stories
You get the feeling that these characters are similar to people you have met, but in a moment in time when the very best can happen. The type of characters where you want to stay with them, rather than see the story end.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK
Readable but certainly not in the top league like Jill Mansell or Milly Johnson. Not sure why this is described as a hilarious read as it is not. Story of friendship so some feel good factor but rather slow and tedious to get going. The most fun is spotting the mistakes due to the lack of proof reading. Perhaps I sound a bit harsh . It is ok just not the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joy!
I was so looking forward to being back in the lovely village of Willowbrook with the characters from Life Begins at 50! That village should be real...in fact, I think it might be. It's probably a closely guarded secret, available only for the ones who really need to be there. People who need amazing friends, a good laugh, support in times of need and a good meal with plenty of wine. I'm packing my bags right now! I adore The Saga Louts in the first book and it was great meeting them again. Sam, Kate and Elsie make appearances too. I must admit my favourite of those is little Elsie - she's hilarious! It was great to meet new characters too. Ingrid arrives very much broken after the death of her husband, and she's really not sure who she is, or what she needs anymore. Luckily, the Saga Louts, Joel and Leo help her to find a way forward and she eventually becomes part of the community, despite initially feeling she wouldn't fit in. Surprisingly, she finds herself opening up to the possibility of finding love again...but who with? You'll have to read it to find out. There has to be a third visit to Willowbrook on the cards very soon from the hugely talented Celia Anderson! And a map of where it is... A five star read - highly recommended!
