Her sweet overtures break down the ex-soldier’s defenses, but there’s more at stake than her body. Every touch, every kiss, every night. The closer she gets, the more exposed his darkest secret.

She’s one step away from finding out what happened the night she lost her family. One step away from leaving him forever.

Five forbidden notes!

Five forbidden notes!
For heaven’s sake! Overture by Skye Warren is the ultimate forbidden tale with too many shades of sinful taboo wrapped in elegance and consuming temptation. It seduced all my senses to the point of craziness. It is fire. It is ice. It is an earth-shaking and mind-blowing reading that leave you craving and aching for more. It is a sweet symphony that entices you and lures you like the Pied Piper of Hamelin. It is a dark harmony and steamy surrender that temps your soul and heart. The writing is deliciously dark and tempting as hell. Forbidden never tasted so sweet before. It is poetically incorrect and darkly absorbing. Everything about this book screams flawless perfection. There is nothing as taboo as this. I’m just a simple bookworm trying to figuring out how a book like this ruined me in the most tempting way. Skye Warren never disappoints me. There is not doubt that she is the queen of taboo romance. Her talent is impressive. She is a wonderful writer. She gifted us a new addiction. Liam North. He is the epitome of an alpha man. He is sin personified and dark temptation. The story told in the pages of this book is seductive and utterly obsessing. It pours forbidden desire and taboo passion. Overture is an intense story that can rip you to shreds. It is raging passion contained by the tiny lines of rules and morality. It is wrong desire packed in dark secrets. In my opinion this book is raw sensuality. It gravitates to what is wrong and taboo, to what is impulsive and rough abandon to dark desires and unforgettable devotion. The plot is unique and original. The story develops around the music world where dark notes are played between a violin prodigy and her military guardian. The angst level is a delicious torture that adds intimacy and ardour. Overture is more than a sensual reading. It is a book where love defies the conventional. It is a fight against what it is correct and what it is wrong. The story of Liam and Samantha is an unconventionally fairy tale where pleasure is a bittersweet torture sedated by obscure notes that awakes desire and love in the most primal way. Liam North is such a complex man tortured by his painful past. The shadows are consuming his souls and his demons are wining his damage heart.

Where on earth do I begin! I pre-ordered Overture since the synopsis not only sparked my interest, but the very thought of reading a forbidden romance revolving around a nobel instrument such as is the violin...well, I was sold. And I have to say as a frustrated musician, Warren’s research into and knowledge of the finer points of music is outstanding. So, when it hit my Kindle in the early hours of the morning; I picked it up and that was that! Everyone started to move except me! Those curious looks thrown my way went ignored. I’d begun the book and had no wish whatsoever to put it down, but was it worth supporting long faces and grumbles. No doubt about it!

The plot works up to a crescendo of incredible intensity. And if it were ever possible, between the staves and the sacrifice for pitches of perfection, secrets one could never have imagined lie. Answers to questions are masterfully convoluted evoking a sense of unrest and not just for the reader. Samantha’s wants to know more. Setting out on a quest to conquer the man she’s loved for what seemed like forever, I must say her resourcefulness to draw attention to herself worked wonders.

Young, talented and determined, Samantha has yet to take the world by storm. She’s been schooled to study, has dexterity and stamina in abundance despite lacking in a few life skills. I have no wish to divulge the reasons why she’d been overly protected by her guardian; however, I couldn’t help but fall hard for this lass whose innocent demeanour I found such a becoming trait. In contrast, I think there’s much more to be said about her sad childhood.

‘Growing up isn’t about learning something new. It’s about unlearning the fairy tales you believed as a child.’

For me, Liam is the perfect gentleman. Ex-military, gorgeous, commanding and quite a bit older than Samantha, he’d cease to be her ward when she reaches legal age. Liam’s is torn between love, guilt and duty. His oh-so troubled soul stirred my emotions and I thought if anyone deserved happiness, it was him. Unfortunately, what I wanted and what the author had in mind were completely different things altogether. You won’t hear me complaining though.

“I’m not fighting demons, sweetheart. I am one.”

Regardless of the age difference or the complex situation they were in, I never felt uncomfortable with Liam and Samantha’s inner thoughts which believe you me, they are titillating and heart-wrenching all in one.

“Then how do you think of me?”
‘My greatest pride and my deepest regret.’

Now, whether you like cliffhangers or not in my honest opinion, Liam and Samantha’s story just has to go on because firstly, I didn’t want the book to finish and secondly, goodness me...the intrigue. Being left up in the air often gets the better of me but for once, my only desire was to get my hands on the follow-up, Concerto. Coming in the middle of May, it couldn’t come sooner. Newbie to Warren’s writing, while chatting to book buddies about this book, many of her novels have been recommended to me, so it’s highly likely I’ll be pushing them to the top of my TBR list. Beautifully written, Overture is a without a doubt, a must-one-click. Bravo!

Firstly, book is not a cliffhanger or an HEA, but it does end abruptly with du du da dum lead in suspenseful storyline to get you to purchase the next book in the series to see what happens to characters. Not as bad as a cliff hanger but still not cool either since I'm not that vested in characters to purchase the next book. Storyline was good: alpha man serves as guardian over young girl about to turn 18 and they skirt the lines of inappropriate relationship and eventually do the darn thing. I won't give more than that. Likeable but flawed characters and real emotions.

I liked how the author didn't get so inundated with details of most things. Except the violin information of course, but what do you expect when that is the central theme of the book. Each chapter started with an interesting fact related to the violin so that was neat. Learned something. The sexual material was described very chaste in my opinion. While the author did use F bombs quite often in the second half of the book, the sex was kept simple and quick and glossed over. More lead up to talking about it than actual doing it.

The tone of the book seemed formal in the beginning them became more casual. Maybe it was just more Liam's character. Also I found it odd that every time the characters got into some sexual situation, they would veer off into talking about something else. Like they couldn't focus. And even though there was some potential beginnings of OMG hot scenes in the book, they seemed to fizzle. And you'd think there would be some uncomfortableness between the characters in some of the stuff that happened, but there wasn't. Just another day. Which, by the way, times jumped around in this book often. It was more a series of scenes at times, vs a cohesive book.

Overall worth a read if you can stay focused (I had a hard time some times) and if you didn't pay much. I go the book for free but not going further to purchase more in the series. Also this book contains character Bea from another Skye Larson book called Escort. I read this book a few months back so it was a nice surprise to catch up to characters. I enjoyed that.

This is book one of three by Skye Warren about Liam North, ex soldier and owner of a Security Company, as well guardian to a child prodigy violinist whose father died. Samantha Brooks, beautiful, young, brilliant violinist who's father a high ranking ambassador, was killed during their time in Russia. Sam's father can only be described as a bad father in that he was incredibly neglectful, uncaring, unloving. Samantha's life changed dramatically when Liam took over her care, she received care, schooling, regular meals and a regularity to her life. Liam took her into his care when she was 12 and he was much older than her. Liam also shared a severely bad childhood himself as his father was a complete monster in every way he could be thus causing Liam to not understand love and he also has abandonment issues due to his mother leaving him as a child. This is a story of Liam fighting his attraction to his young virginal ward for years. Samantha has her own issues with no understanding of love as her father showed no love towards her whatsoever and most of the time forgot her very existence. She too is fighting her attraction to her guardian and not understanding it even. So much happens in this book as Samantha is receiving threats and someone is seeking to hurt her. She was at her father's side when he died but as blocked all memory of it and their are very powerful people who want to know what she knows. Great start to a very intense triology.

This was a delicious book, Liam as protective as can be over Samantha who is young and innocent. I enjoyed the chemistry between these 2 as well as the differences. The journey these 2 have taking has been is a wonder but hard story but she is one of the best violin players and she is turning 18 . What is going to happen.?

Loved it...!!! Why, why, why, didn't I scan some of the reviews this time...!!! Cliff-hanger... Usually I don't buy the first book in a series without checking it has an ongoing romance - I like to wait until all the parts have been released. Sigh, hurry up MAY...!!!

As for taboo romance:- 18 years vs 34 years? Today maybe, but most of the romance books I read in the seventies and eighties (yes I'm that old) starred H/h around those ages... (18 to 23 vs 30 - 38) Women were rarely over 23 and their men were never under 30. This book was well written, steamy and emotional. One of my favourite authors. Some darker themes though. ❤

I am wrecked after having just finished Overture, and I am so in love with Liam and Samantha! Skye Warren has done an amazing job in this first of three books in the North Security Trilogy, and I am chomping at the bit to dive into book two!
Samantha hasn't had the easiest upbringing, yet as a child prodigy, always strived to please, to be enough, for anyone that might take care of her. Six years with the indomitable Liam North have taught her many things, including that loving your guardian isn't necessarily going to pan out how you hope it would.
Liam is a man of stone countenance and build, created as such because of a childhood no child ought to bear, and the believe that he has the very devil inside him, making him incapable of being anything else, anything more than that. Yet, his ward, well, she just isn't what he expected, and he doesn't know how to plan for that.
I adored this story. Their own brand of tension, of friendship, of support, of love, it oozed from every single page even when I want to shake Samantha's shoulders or give Liam a slap upside the head. Throw in a wonderful cast of secondary characters, each of whom I hope get their own story because well, I demand to read them, and it made for a book I couldn't put down. In fact, I'm going to pick up book two now! So, if you love a bit of taboo, a lot of angst, and an additional sprinkling of swoon, well, look no further!
